The story of this photo

This is a 6-exposure HDR image from inside the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto, Canada. When I was there in July, I was exploring the city by foot. On that particular day it was like 35+ Β°C, and I was toast when I arrived at the location. But it turned out to be the perfect day for the visit as there were very few people there. So, photographing the place was relativly easy.

How it was shot

> Taken hand-held

> Six exposures (+2 to -3 EV)

> Camera: Nikon D7000

> Lens: Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED

How the HDR image was created and tonemapped

> CA reduction and white balance correction on all source exposures in Adobe Camera Raw [details]

> Saved the 3 images as TIFFs

> Created an additional +4 EV images from the original +2 EV source photo [details]

> Applied noise reduction (Topaz Denoise) to each of the source images [details]

> Resulting TIFF images were then used as input to Photomatix (Details Enhancer option)

How it was post-processed

> Post-processing was done in Photoshop

> Topaz Adjust for enhancing the colors and the lighting [details]

> Sharpening using the High-Pass method [details]

> Separate Levels and Saturation adjustment layers on the following areas:

> > The carpet (desaturating the ornaments)

> > The wooden floor

> > The white parts of the walls and the ceiling (desaturation)

> > The glass roof

> > The wood work in the pillars and the ceiling

> > The bronze/golden ornaments in the pillars

> Global Levels and Saturation layers for global fine-tuning

> Slight vignetting [details]

> Watermarking [details]

A railway line in Kloof SA .3 exposures at 2ev spacings.I really find it hard to resist these type of shots.

On my latest day trip to London I took a few Underground shots. This one was taken at London Bridge Station in a tunnel between the Jubilee Line and the Northern Line.

I think that permits are required for professional photography but casual photographs are allowed but no tripods and no flash.

Taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 Wide Angle Zoom at 10mm. Taken handheld at 1000 iso with auto bracketing for HDR. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. At F5 the 3 images were 1/80, 1/20 and 1/5th Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

Photomatix

Outputted in Photomatix to detail enhancer for an HDR. Click the Camera name top right for Exif details and the settings used.

Photoshop

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance with layer masks to exclude the highlight areas

Vibrance layer was increased by 16 points.

Hue Saturation adjustment layer yellows and blues decreased for a more natural look.

Topaz Adjust used to bring out more detail and a gritty look with a layer mask to exclude some parts of the floor

Noiseware Pro

Unsharp Mask a little sharpening.

Duplicate layer with mask to apply extra sharpening (clarity effect) with layer mask to exclude highlight areas.

Everyone is rushing to get out of the ship, but the best view is really from the top deck.

You might ask yourself, "What is going on here?", and it's a fair question. I liked both the traffic reflections off the building and the views inside, so I composited them together -- as it turns out, this required a lot of detailed masking work, which I've never been fast at. There was much swearing. The base image is a single long exposure, and the interiors are an HDR -- wherever the windows were blown out on the base due to interior illumination, I swapped in the HDR, like a crude tone mapping. Also you can see some of the challenges of laying out rectilinear furniture within a curved space. :)

The multi-award winning Infinity Bridge is so named because from certain viewing angles the twin arches and their reflection in the river appear as an infinity symbol. (Mainly at night and when the river is calm).

It’s design is unique and at night the bridge handrail and footway are lit with custom made blue and white lighting built into the handrail that changes colour as pedestrians cross the bridge. As people walk across they give rise to a β€œcomets trail of light as sensors trigger the lights to change from blue to white

"The Long View"

There are places where only lines, distance and simple color tells the story.

This is one of those places; at Lake Ponchartrain.

Welcome to Day 2 of my HDR a Day series! Stay tuned, there's five more where this came from!

I took this HDR in Rush, NY using a Canon EOS Rebel T2i and an 18-55 f/3.5-4.5 lens. The shot was bracketed at three exposures (-2...0...+2), and tone-mapped in Photomatix Pro. Then, I added some Color Changes and Sharpness in Photoshop CS5.

Enjoy! :)

My feet got soaked taking this shot, this was another image that I shot at Ford Green nature reserve. This is a HDR shot but I didn't want the fact it was HDR to be the most interesting part of the image, I wanted the perspective to be the element of the image that intrigues people and HDR can just complement that.

Just put on the new NiteShades today... Couldn't wait to take a picture, even if it was:

A. In my driveway

B. At night

C. While pouring rain.

Some more to come soon!
