Part of my enjoyment in my photo enthusiasm is in the post processing phase. I enjoy editing to get the image to look the way I feel it presents itself best. But at other times, and quite often I leave well enough alone and go SOOC.

Here I especially like how all the individual elements near and far create new interrelationships with one another when flattened upon the picture frame. Yes, all those poles, but here the water tower and traffic cone are a half mile away from each other, but in the shot they are buddies. Add in that tree and let's have a party. -- throw in a red reflector as the fulcrum and let's swing.

did someone say triangles?

In case anyone wants a better look at the two from that mating pair I posted recently, here they are with individual portraits- female on the left, male on the right. They favored the same perch, although I flipped the female around so they would face each other. Siskiyou County, California

As Thaipusam festival gets underway, devotees flood into the preparation site to have their bodies marked with holy ash to invoke the support of the Hindu gods. Energy is high and queues can be lengthly but in each line of people are individuals taking moments to reflect upon the elements of life that bring our communities together.

Martin Wiese’s installation „Roman Series“ (2017-2023) consists of seven sculptures. The head of each individual stone/bronze figure can be manually turned, which creates a playful element. Seen at the 9th Swiss Triennial of Sculpture in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland (open from 4 May 2024 until 30 October 2024).

The doll is named Ling and is made by a company called Karito--there are 6 dolls of different ethnic heritages who come with passports and a book that has a story and journal which creates a personality for each individual doll. Ling is Chinese--I've already gotten another doll for Genevieve, Pita from Mexico. Karito has its own website for kids where they can play games (they win points which allows them to contribute to humanitarian projects they'd like to help), read and post blogs & messages, learn about other countries, get their own online passport which gets stamped when games are played, and are encouraged to try to "save the world" by helping others--another important feature is that the children can pick one of four designated charities and donate 3% of the doll's price.

Endemic to Sri Lanka : The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya)

The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) is a leopard subspecies native to Sri Lanka.

Classified as endangered by IUCN, the population is believed to be declining due to numerous threats including poaching for trade and human-leopard conflicts. No subpopulation is larger than 250 individuals.

There is quite a difference in winter versus the warm months in observing the eating habits of pheasants. In the summer time unless you are out very early in the mornings or happen to catch them searching for bits of gravel to serve as grit to help their digestion, pheasants often are more hidden as they seek things to eat. They normally have a menu with more entries on it than they do during the winter.

The phrase “scratching out a living” goes all the way back to the 14th-15th centuries when in the older farming communities the farmers “scratched” the land using more primitive tools.

By the 18th-19th centuries, the use of the phrase gained uses beyond that of farming to include anyone who was barely making ends meet in their day to day struggle.

Jump ahead until today and the phrase applies to a broad spectrum of normally physically hard, low paying jobs or an unstable work life.

I grew up in an era when there were only a few government help agencies and can well remember my folks talking about people around them during the Depression and beyond who spent many years on community “poor farms”.

Poor farms were quite prevalent at one time in the US and folks who were unable to work due to age, disability or other factors were housed and fed in exchange for helping to produce food and maintain a farm. Local governments ran the farms as they were considered a cost-effective way to care for the needy rather than simply doling out monies to individuals.

It carried negative connotations for participants, particularly because they were labeled “inmates.”

Poor farms gradually petered out by the middle of last century with many in Minnesota closing in the 1930s due to government programs starting up such as Social Security in 1935 and the growing prevalence of nursing homes.

Galapagos penguins against the lava rock shoreline of Bartolome' Island. I will not be on Flickr tomorrow or most of Friday. Helping out at the annual orchid society show.

The Galápagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) is a penguin endemic to the Galápagos Islands. It is the only penguin that lives north of the equator in the wild. It can survive due to the cool temperatures resulting from the Humboldt Current and cool waters from great depths brought up by the Cromwell Current.

The Galápagos penguin is found primarily on Fernandina Island and the west coast of Isabela Island, but small populations are scattered on other islands in the Galápagos archipelago.

While ninety percent of the Galápagos penguins live among the western islands of Fernandina and Isabela, they also occur on Santiago, Bartolomé, northern Santa Cruz, and Floreana. The northern tip of Isabela crosses the equator, meaning that some Galápagos penguins live the northern hemisphere, the only penguins to do so.

The species is endangered, with an estimated population size of around 1,500 individuals in 2004, according to a survey by the Charles Darwin Research Station. The population underwent an alarming decline of over 70% in the 1980s, but is slowly recovering.

It is therefore the rarest penguin species. Population levels are influenced by the effects of the El Niño Southern Oscillation, which reduces the availability of shoaling fish, leading to low reproduction or starvation. However, oil pollution, fishing by-catch and competition) may be adding to the ongoing demise of this species.

On Isabela Island, introduced cats, dogs, and rats attack penguins and destroy their nests. When in the water, they are preyed upon by sharks, fur seals, and sea lions.

I love her majestic presence in this shot.
