Kurds, from darkness to light

An independent region since 2003, Iraqi Kurdistan, war-torn for many years, is little known among Westerners. Through his work in the humanist photographic tradition, Emmanuel Smague invites us to discover a warm people as it emerges from the oppression of Saddam Hussein’s regime. He reveals to us the many faces of this part of the world where people constitute the main wealth and he opens our eyes to people who are refugees on their own land -- the land of their ancestors. Through Emmanuel Smague’s testimonial, our eyes meet the gaze of the Kurds’ eyes lifting the veil of our indifference and indelibly engraving images deep into our memories.

The title of this pic comes from W.H. Auden's brilliant poem of the same name about the indifference of the stars. It's available here at poets.org

There is nothing the human spirit cannot overcome when there is hope. The smallest glimmer can light the path from out of the darkest shadows, we all need to help light that path for one another free from judgment and indifference. Never alone, never unheard and never forgotten. What was once in secret is now our story...to overcome, to heal, to thrive and to inspire others. From out of the darkness and ashes we RISE!!! 💛💛💛

The opposite of love is not hate it's indifference... Isn't that ironic?

Chapel-tomb of A.Ya. and A.I. Polyakovs, built near the church around 1910 by I.E. Bondarenko with the participation of V. Vladimirov. Brick faced with light decorative tiles and richly decorated inside and out with glazed polychrome ceramics, it is an outstanding piece of art of the Neo-Russian style.

The restoration is currently underway.

The Polyakovs are the last owners of the Znamenskoye-Gubailovo estate in the center of Krasnogorsk, Moscow Region.

In 1885 the estate was bought by N.Ya. Polyakov, having arranged a weaving production in the premises of the former factory.

In 1885 his brother, the famous Moscow merchant Alexander Yakovlevich Polyakov, the owner of a cloth and weaving factory, became the owner of the estate.

Subsequently, Znamenskoye-Gubailovo began to belong to Sergei Alexandrovich Polyakov, N.Ya. and A. Ya. Polyakovs, engineer, translator, philanthropist, founder and owner of the Scorpion publishing house, one of the founders of the Libra magazine, which became the cradle of Russian symbolism.

Unfortunately, after the revolution, the fate of Sergei Alexandrovich was rather tragic. Polyakov accepted the loss of wealth after the revolution with philosophical indifference. In 1929 S.A. Polyakov was evicted from Moscow, banned from living in the 5 largest Russian cities. He died in 1943 in Kazan, where he was exiled.

Where there is doubt, gives us Faith

Where there is despair, gives us Hope

Where there is darkness ,gives us Light

Where there is sadness, gives us Joy

Where there is indifference, gives us Warmth

Where there is hatred, gives us love

His light will always lighten the whole world.

He is always along the side of us...

to inspire us,....

to live with all one's soul, with all one's goodness and righteousness.

Happy weekend for everyone🌅

Swans are seen here in immense numbers now, Flocking up and heading for the far arctic north to make little swans.

This group appears to have their stuff together as they regard me with the saucy indifference of an 80’s rock group on an album cover. These are, ostensibly, all Tundra Swans. But the one on the left, with the pronounced pinch between bill and eye, and the rounded brow line has features of the less common Trumpeter Swan, though the yellow lores (in front of the eye), is a distinctive Tundra Swan feature.

Of course, it could be a hybrid, though these are not documented in nature, only in captive populations.

One could say “who cares?", as they are a fine-looking lot, however they’re called.

Someone Like You

Furillen is gone.

The war is going on.

It's always happening somewhere.

Ukraine is not the only one. Wars are always going on all over the world.

I know that if I lament the stupidity of war here, the world will not change immediately.

Many people also know that they don't pay much attention to the words written here.

Some say that art is powerless against war.

But all I can do is make something and make a small voice.

Is it meaningless?

But I don't think people should be indifferent to being in a dangerous situation, exposed to sadness and fear.

Art may not match bullet, but indifference will destroy a lot more than missiles.

And the chain of sadness and hatred will be bigger and deeper, and will eventually swallow us too.

I don't want to stop making something, even if it doesn't make sense.

And I will continue to mutter peace in a small voice.

If I make something and you see it

And you make something and I see it

The small circle of ripples that spreads in this way may change the world little by little.

I felt a grudge but it felt bad on me, so I preferred to leave it to others and dress in elegant indifference.

Shot in Chicago's Ranch Triangle neighborhood. Back after a long wet weekend in Wisconsin.

Près du côté sombre de ce monde rude et glacé;

Près de l’immense rivière de glace (glacier) qui glisse vers moi et menace de m’emporter;

CLOSE TO THE EDGE

I built a small refuge up in the mountains

Close to the edge of the dark side of this rough and icy world;

Close to the edge of the huge river of ice (glacier) that glides towards me and threatens to take me away;

Close to the edge of this thin line between this majestic world and that of the unknown and the mystery.

And I painted it in red so that the rare birds

who ventured into these frigid lands came to visit me between two flapping wings.

You could say that living so close to the limits is a dangerous business ...

Sometimes this is true. But the most ominous hazard to our lives is not the challenges of the human adventure in all its forms.

It resides, on the contrary, in the comfort of indifference, in this position which consists of not being.

The “Land of Levi” or at least the “Land that Levi Made Famous” pictured here early one morning in October wandering through the village trying to capture early morning light and shadow. Imagine being sentenced to live here as Carlo Levi was 80 years ago, he was a doctor, a painter, a writer and a very outspoken critic of fascism from the cosmopolitan city of Turin, the culture shock would have been massive.

The powers that be wanted Levi silenced instead they supplied him with experiences and material that created the modern Italian masterpiece “Christ Stopped in Eboli” though it would be almost a decade after time that the memoir would be published. The account details life in the poor Southern half of Italy during the 30’s painting a description of abject poverty and political indifference from the wealthy North that captured the conscience of a nation in the waning days of Mussolini’s fascism.

Aliano made a massive impression on Levi and he on the town both combined to make an interesting stop both for those that love strange scenery and those that love all things literary. Levi’s telling of the locals story gave new life to the village and attracts visitors from all over the world to see the inspiration for the novel, even Carlo after his death has become part of the attraction being buried in the local cemetery

Miscellaneous

This is a random collection of miscellaneous items that interested me because of their colour or texture or indeed their history. What tales they might tell. This time wood and metal show themselves to be more than just inanimate objects. Once they were beautiful in their own way but time and tide have reversed their fortunes. And they fell foul of man’s indifference.

This was taken at the Isle of Wight Railway, of an old truck, which may in the fullness of time be renovated but lay dormant, their story untold.

Cats are a complete mystery. One of the most appealing thing is the multitude of different expressions they have. They are masters of the look of indifference. And they often give that murderous psycho look that makes you want to walk away backwards as to keep an eye on them.....just in case.

"The greatest conquest is the conquest of fear.

The greatest courage is the courage to start over.

The greatest virtue is to care deeply.

The greatest ignorance is ignorance of beauty.

The greatest sin is indifference.

The greatest reward for a life well lived is to have no regrets."

These Little Owls have lived in this pile of apple bins for at least 8 years even when they take some bins for apple picking the group stays put .I have often watched the Owls here over the past years and I never tire of seeing how they are getting on . This shot was taken from a roadside verge and the owls treated me with almost complete indifference to my presence again this year . I think they see me as a little odd but harmless and so I am as a rule just ignored .

FRAGILE: A short history of the Present Times.

There was a comfortable softness in the wet and salty air of the shore, an atmosphere that invited the walkers to be seen in the distance, to the relaxation, to this joyful indifference displayed by the vacationers. "We have to live the present moment, intensely!" they like to repeat themselves constantly.

For the vast majority of us, the horizon of daily life is naturally that which contains all the reality and mobilizes all our attention. We live here and now. It is a fundamental human reality. That's why we have difficulty projecting ourselves beyond this horizon. Seen from here and now, our planet appears to us as an unchanged, unalterable reality, belonging to another horizon and over which nothing and no one has influence.

Looking at these little human silhouettes drifting off the horizon, it seemed to me that this way of thinking was perhaps one of the main frailty of attitude to climate change: It is this difficulty in understanding our impact on natural phenomena on another scale and, above all, our resistance to adapt our behavior accordingly, as we do in everyday life, becoming aware of the consequences of our mistakes. It is in order to overcome these shortcomings that science has been invented. So?

There was a comfortable softness in the moist, salty air of the shore. In the viewfinder of my camera, there was a beautiful landscape, a magical moment that I wanted to immortalize; but at the same time in my mind, a new and uncomfortable feeling questioned me: and you, what do you intend to do here and now ... for tomorrow?

I thought that there were two pairs of little Owls around this farm on Romney marsh and tonight as I was watching one parent trying to feed 2 youngsters this little one appeared looking much younger than the other two and to my amazement being fed by another parent . This makes a total of possibly seven little Owls on this one farm .

I have been amazed at their indifference to my presence again this year . I think they see me as a little odd but harmless and so I am as a rule just ignored .

The storm is approaching like a veiled threat. The moment approaches when the sky will tear its dry indifference. The time and its scars will come, the wound of the clouds will close, the thunder will cease and its echoes will remain. We are all afraid but we will go sailing with you.

For my dad

This image was taken last summer from a quiet road past a farm on Romney marsh I spent a lot of time watching these birds over the last two years and came up with a total of seven little Owls on this one farm . I said in my posts at the time that I was amazed at their indifference to my presence this year . I think they see me as a little odd but harmless and so I am as a rule just ignored .
