At the very still headwaters of the Little Calumet River which meanders for about 25 miles towards Lake Michigan.
The lake and small falls here form the headwaters of the Little Calumet River which winds its way for about 60 miles towards Chicago.
Late afternoon hike along the West Beach Trail. On the other side of the sand dune are some smaller dunes, the beach and Lake Michigan.

Only a few small openings remain along the overgrown fence row to allow a peek to the valley below. In the past the foreground hillside was clear grazing land for cattle; it is fast returning to woods as you can see by the trees framing the bottom edge of the view.
The Louisville & Indiana's Z550 has just picked up a string of cars off the Indiana Railroad and is heading up the ramp. Their 25th anniversary unit is on the point with their Veterans unit trailing. Down below the Indiana Railroad's SAHW road train is pulled down and waiting on a road crew to show up for their run south out of town. The Indiana Railroad's 25th anniversary unit also happened to be in that power set. I haven't done a lot with either railroad but was certainly happy to luck into a day where the LIRC interchanged with the INRD catching both classy Indiana Railroads in one frame. Indiana Railroad SAHW rolls passed Lake Lemon near Bloomington, Indiana on a dreary but colorful fall afternoon with a SD40-2 and a SD9043MAC doing the honors.
In golden light at the end of a long spring day, a Conrail ELSF train heads into the setting sun at 7:33 p.m. on May 28, 1989, at Chesterton, Indiana. The westbound freight is powered by an all-Santa Fe run through locomotive consist, led by Kodachrome EMD F45 No. 5950, heading back to home rails on the Conrail main line.
Taken near Rome City Indiana.I didn't expect the sen to poke through the clouds here before it totally set.
Another Grand Trunk westbound in a holding pattern at Calumet Avenue. This was a common place for the Troy Dispatcher to hold trains before launching them into the Chicago Terminal mess. Since CN sold the line west of here, this doesn't happen often.
Winding through the tight curves and backyards of Sellersburg, the SIND heads down to the interchange with two covered hoppers from Lehigh Cement. Pausing to shoot the SIND on this day was a decision made only the night before. Looking back now, it was a good decision as I would make no more return trips before the end came for the Southern Indiana Railway.
Outside Madison, Indiana, I discovered a cloud factory. Must have been on reduced capacity that day. Still, it was putting out quality work.
My only encounter with Indiana Railroad's SD9043MACs was early one morning in southern Indiana. INRD 9013 and 9012 were standing silent, awaiting a train of empties to be ready for pulling at Hoosier Energy. These big EMDs have since been replaced by former Norfolk Southern SD70Ms.
CSS GP38-2's 2005, 1001, and 2007 lead the way of train AF-11 as it departs Kirk Yard onto the city track at Pine Junction located in Gary, IN.
About a month ago a few friends and I went to get some startrails of this Diner in mid Indiana. Little bummed I didn't get Polaris in the shot, but I still really like the photo.
