Probably the hardest thing I've ever tried to photograph.

So frustrating, so out of control but also fascinating..

Kudos to all who stepped up to the challenge.

HMM!

Crazy Tuesday theme Orange

When my son was a toddler his favourite colour was orange and everything was about Orange Power. Orange certainly holds it's punch as far as colour goes. I feel a bit colour blinded having worked on this theme.

Happy Crazy Tuesday 😄

You burn like hell, pure red and stormy and I fly like smoke, pure black and gloomy.

Macro Mondays theme: Smoke

Smoke is a by-product of combustion. And as we all know, incense which is composed of aromatic plant materials releases a smoky fragrance while burning. So, for my picture, I chose to use a cone-shaped incense to produce interesting smoke patterns. I have to admit it was not easy to capture the perfect pattern! I am sure you have guessed that by the end of my photoshoot the whole house smelled of incense. LOL!

I used a photo editor to change the smoke color to red, which gave it a more dramatic effect!

Thank you everyone for your visits, faves, and kind comments

Smoke and/or Steam .

I have a shot just right for the challenge with copious amounts of smoke and steam ( see first comment box ) - trouble is it was taken a couple of years ago . You can imagine how miffed I was on Wednesday to learn that the very same locomotive had steamed it's way very close to home on the previous evening - opportunity lost !!

Next idea was to visit the dry cleaners that I used to manage and take a shot of the steam gun in action - 60-80 pounds of steam to blast stains away on the spotting table - again only an idea that never came to fruition . Another lost chance was a fire in a multi-storey car park on Thursday where seven cars were destroyed - lots of billowing smoke there , but found out too late and anyway I think thaat would be too ghoulish and in bad taste .

Next my daughter suggested " Smoke On The Water " - now we are cooking ! A few trials and we end up with the shot above , one of those fragrant incense cones smoking away sat on a piece of bark with the resulting smoke drifting across the bird bath !!

This now leads us to my convoluted title , basically Smoke On The Water for a sight and sound . But if there is anyone out there who does not know the origins of the song , here is a link to tell how it came about ---------

www.songfacts.com/facts/deep-purple/smoke-on-the-water

And of course now - the iconic song itself---

It's gonna take a pound of incense to clean my mind of the memories of the sight of those plastic babies with their shapes of deformed pairs of lips sticking out from the tops of their ghastly heads. Gerber is babyfood, ew are people supposed to spoon Gerber onto the dolls.

Hot Wheels & Pan Am Airlines pouch & the infamous Star Trek issue of Young Miss Magazine & American flag dress & "White Nights" ballet movie & "Cat Stevens Foreigner" & Electric Light Orchestra "Time" album incl. the ridiculous song "Twilight" which you might want to be careful around because it might get stuck in your head.

Bursera graveolens, known in Spanish as palo santo ("holy wood") is a tree that inhabits the coast of Ecuador. The tree belongs to the same family (Burseraceae) as frankincense and myrrh. It is widely used in folk medicine. Aged heartwood is rich in terpenes such as limonene and α-terpineol.

The use of Palo santo (or Palo Santo) from Bursera Graveolens is reported to be traditional in South America, especially in Ecuador. According to the local customs, it is used against the "mala energia" (bad energy) ("Palo Santo para limpiar tu casa de la mala energia, Palo Santo para la buena suerte" or "Palo Santo to clean your house of bad energy, Palo Santo for good luck").

When cutting the wood to shape the Palo Santo sticks, sawdust is created. This wood dust is then used to make incense shaped cones. The process goes like this: The sawdust is carefully sifted to remove any larger pieces. Then it is mixed with “moyuyo” (a shrub fruit that is used as glue) and Palo Santo aromatic water. Throughout the process everything is used, there is no waste product.

-------------------------------------

Week 1 theme: Macro

01.25.2013

You might say that incense is for neo-hippies or some kind of new-age palm reading cat woman. I disagree. Many times in my 31 years I have boarded planes in one country and landed in another shortly after. I have spent days, weeks, and sometimes months in places that are not my home and have accumulated memories that I am fond of along the way. I have taken heaps of photos over the years, mainly as a way of protecting these precious moments of my past in the event that I suffer some form of dementia or acute memory loss. Then I came to a realization one day while wandering aimlessly on a city street in China. It is the 21st century. Hard drives crash, viruses spread through the internet like some strange parasite in college dormitory, and looking through hundreds and thousands of photos just takes too damn long. The quickest way for me to bring back memories of distant lands is to recreate the smell of some of those places in my own home. Every temple I have visited abroad I have purchased some incense. It works. The problem now is that I only remember temples. It is only when I visit a public restroom that I seem to recall New Delhi.
