Wanda found me this incense burner at the Thrift Store.....this thing's awesome!

The answer is FLARES!! I saw these incense burners in the open courtyard inside the Forbidden City of Beijing, and the first thing came to my mind was that those ancient emperors must have been quite superstitious about what 's going on in the sky. I looked up to the sky through my camera's viewfinder and found my answers.

Vantines 1920's era incense burners. The one on the far left is a miniature replica of the botafumeiro incense burner at the Santiago de Compostela cathedral in Spain. The original botafumeiro is one of the largest incense burners in the world and takes several people to swing it!

One of many thrones in the Forbidden City or Palace Museum. This would be where the Emperor or his mother the Empress Dowager would grant an audience within his/her private quarters.

Go back to the times of the ancients with the new Days of Yore event! As you know, we here at *paper moon* LOVE ancient cultures! So we were excited to be a part of this event.

Going back to my roots, Ancient Rome was picked as inspiration and we made *pm* Roman Incense Burners.

These incense burner sets come in both tall with bowl in stand just the bowl. Also smoke & smokeless versions of each! The smoke versions not only smoke, but the ashes smolder and glow. It's so pretty!

These were used in homes and in temples. Incense was really important to Romans, some traveling far and wide to get the best. Sometimes it was just dried herbs and flowers, but most time it was a combination of items and oils to make a resin that was lit. The stands were so that the smell would be about nose height at least.

There are 5 different sets to choose from!

Close up of burning incense sticks in Nizamuddin Dargah, New Delho, India

Polychrome mask from an incense burner depicting the old god of fire, Huehuetéotl, one of the oldest deities in Mesoamerica. He was worshipped long before the establishment of Teotihuacan. In most representations, you can see his advanced age - here, his wrinkles are heavily stylized. Here he wears a feather crown (and huge earrings), but in many depictions, he wears a coal pan on his head. Huehuetéotl seems to have been a protection god for the home and fireplace.

Huehuetéotl's name literally means 'Old God'.
