The downspout pipes are absolutely huge in St. Petersburg. We're never going back to Russia. I asked a local tour guide how she liked Putin. (A dumb question.) She said, "He is my hero." I wonder how she's faring with the loss of tourism.
is a castle in Austria, considered one of Austria's most impressive medieval castles. It is on a 172-metre (564 ft) high dolomite rock near Sankt Georgen am Längsee, east of the town of Sankt Veit an der Glan in Carinthia. The rock castle is one of the state's landmarks and a major tourist attraction.
The castle was first mentioned in a deed of donation from King Ludwig the German from the year 860, when Friesach and several farms were donated to the diocese of Salzburg. Among them was a farm near Osterwitz (curtis ad Astaruizza). The castle is mentioned in the oldest documents, dated between the 11th and 12th centuries, and also during the attacks of the Turkish peoples in the 15th century as a place of refuge for the population. Initially owned by Count Ceizolf von Spanheim, a descendant of the German Emperor Arnulf von Karantanien, known as the first Donor von Osterwitz, the castle remains in his family's possession. After the death of Hans Schenk von Osterwitz on May 30, 1478, the last of his tribe, his property passed to King Friedrich III. return.
The German poem "The Three Sparrows" by Christian Morgenstern (see below) dates from 1921 (Era of Expressionism).
Because of copyright, I can't simply translate the poem, but the content is about the three sparrows Erich, Franz and the "cheeky" Hans, who sit in a bare hazel bush in winter.
The poem describes in impressive atmospheric density the protection and security that the three little birds can give each other in the icy cold, with Hans, who sits in the middle, he has the warmest.
Die drei Spatzen
In einem leeren Haselstrauch
Da sitzen drei Spatzen, Bauch an Bauch.

The views from Horta de Sant Joan are impressive, especially towards the east, with the Ports de Tortosa cliffs. But among them all, the Muntanya de Santa Bárbara (751 m,) stands out, with the old convent of Sant Salvador d'Horta at its feet.

The main attraction of Praia da Rocha are the spectacular natural rock formations surrounding the beach. These impressive ochre-coloured cliffs give the beach a fascinating feel. Literally, the name Praia da Rocha means 'Rocky Beach'. The beach is quite sandy.
Praia da Rocha is one of the most well-known beaches and resort towns in Portugal. It is located on the Algarve coast in the town of Portimão, about an hour's drive from the Faro Airport. Google
Presenting an impressive image for CN passenger services as well as "F-unit Friday", FP-9A #6511 leads a pretty much perfect looking "Super Continental" train (IMHO) with A-B-B-B power. The westbound is making it's station stop on what looks to be a fine winter day in the middle of nowhere northern Ontario. The Longlac station is behind the train, and I sure wish I'd been standing right there to observe this. But I wasn't and Mr. Ken McCucheon steps up to the plate again with another killer view. I'm just trying to remember what in the world I could have traded to him for this one.......

Located in the heart of the Peruvian Andes, the sacred Inca citadel built around 1450 and discovered in 1911, still hides enigmas and mysteries about its real purpose, which continue to be hidden to this day and which arouse the interest of both visitors and archaeologists from all over the world.
Due to its strategic location at the top of a high mountain, there are various theories about what it could mean for the Incas. Some argue that it was built as a great mausoleum for the Inca Pachacútec, while others claim that it was an important administrative and agricultural center whose cultivation areas served for the livelihood of its inhabitants. However, it is also considered that it was used as a necessary link between the Andes and the Peruvian Amazon or as a resting residence for the Inca governor.
The truth is that Machu Picchu is one of the greatest symbols behind what was the impressive architecture and engineering of the Inca Empire. Although its origin is still the subject of study, the value and significance it represented in its time, as well as its imposing design, have earned it to be considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
I'm still working on some edits to put shots up on another site. This is an old photo from my archives that has been reworked and resized. There are several that have similar looks to them, owing to the fact that the storm that rolled through Daytona Beach Shores that day was so impressive that I took tons of shots. All were taken from the balcony of the condo I was staying at. Unfortunately, all were taken with a point & shoot camera, so the clarity is mediocre on most, and there was just so much I could do with editing, but still, the images do convey the incredible force of nature in a powerful way.
The sunset shots were taken after the storm had passed, and that's not the sun glowing THROUGH the clouds that you see, but the REFLECTION of the sun off the clouds, as the sun sets in the west here, and these views are facing east, northeast or southeast towards the Atlantic.
The shot called Stormy Day was right before the storm hit, and Stop! You're Going the Wrong Way! was also at the beginning of the storm. Oddly enough, there was little or no rain, and the lightning and thunder produced by the thunderhead stayed mostly inside of the cloud itself. I suppose I should have been inside while it went through, but I was so captivated by it that I couldn't stop taking photos! These are among my most colorful, but that is mostly from the editing. The colors after the storm were much more pastel, and the storm itself wasn't as dark looking. These images create the mood I experienced looking at the beauty of it all, so I hope you enjoy!

This is my neighbor, CJ. Impressive, isn't he? He weighs almost twice what I do, so as you can see, I have to be careful when we play. He's a gentle giant, but doesn't know his own strength sometimes. We found him and his dad up on the Trail and spent a few minutes dogging around before we said goodbye and headed off into the snow.
Lots of it last night, and it will be snowing off and on for most of the day, with some areas of Ontario receiving up to about 30cm.
The thirty-year daily average for Ottawa is 175, but we've had about 265 already this year, and that's without counting today.
In 2008 322 fell into this city, but Dad remembers 1971 when Ottawa was buried in 357cm. That's 140 inches of snow!
Well, that's the weather report. Happy trails!

This particular day in Iceland was a balmy 15/60 degree day.....nothing like what we'll be seeing here in Manitoba this week. We're definitely starting to feel the winter chill!

Following the passenger trains this morning on the Algoma Central was a rare daylight extra north, the reason the steel mill was expecting to go on strike and they emptied the yard of steel loads. Here a five unit beast of a train struggles upgrade out of Sault Ste. Marie with 117 cars mainly all steel loads of some kind heading for interchange with the CP at Franz or the CN at Oba - impressive for sure - August 4, 1990.

The frozen waterfall from Lake Matthiessen is quite impressive and I love all the different layers as it freezes and thaws in different areas.
I was just finishing up and about to pack away the camera when the sun decided to come out, adding a little extra light to the scene.

One day last winter, while I was admiring the sunny , snowed garden , I suddenly perceive a huge flying presence with open large wings …landing majestically in the middle of our garden, close to our pond !!!!!!!! And I rushed to pick up my camera!!!
Herons are really an impressive visit in our garden, having in their mind to have a great meal on my beloved red fish, about 30 of them at the moment!! But, of course, I let them stay as long as they serve as a great …model for me….And then, I create a light noise, and immediately those huge wings open again, and they fly away…
This time the occasion was very positive for shooting, thanks to the great sunlight, shadows, and colors of the winter garden!!
