This was the first substrate impressioning tool I built. At the time, I believed that substrate compression was a necessary condition for the development of desiccation ridges. Later tests demonstrated that substrate compaction is actually not a necessary condition.
The size and robustness of the tool is a reflection of my initial technique, which was to place the took in a bed of test substrate, then place my full body weight on it.

It's only now that I've started taking photographs that I can understand and fully appreciate Impressionist paintings. These plant holders are floating among the reflections of leaves from trees above a water channel.

So today was totally hectic - we were leaving out of town at the end of the day. I grabbed this in the morning - it was just spitting snow. The drops are on the windshield, the background is the sunrise.
