Uncle Sam's American Circus

American living trailers are now very common with fairs and circuses alike, but to my eyes they do look a little odd behind European lorries. Given Uncle Sam's penchant for US vehicles I suppose it was inevitable they would end up with an American trailer pulled by a lorry from the same country. Registered in the UK when it was two years old, P122 AWX is apparently a GMC TopKick and looks rather old-fashioned, but American truck styling does tend to be a little conservative by European standards.

A continuation of my bottle cap collection. These are imports from the Western Hemisphere. Canada makes up the bulk of these, followed by (in order) Mexico, El Salvador, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Brazil.
Alaska and Hawaii are also represented (despite not being imports). Perhaps if I ever get any Russian caps I'll put them next to the Alaskan ones given that I'm told you can see Russia from there. If I get a cap from Russia does that give me enough experience to be Vice President?

Parque Fernão Dias

Quando foi inaugurado em 1980, além de toda sua exuberante área verde, suas muitas quadras esportivas e seus campos de futebol (entre outros atrativos), o Parque Fernão Dias também se destacava por ter o primeiro velódromo para competições de ciclismo de Minas Gerais, o terceiro do Brasil. Paralelamente ao velódromo, uma pista de BMX. Com isso, Contagem integrou o calendário de importantes competições nacionais e internacionais nas décadas de 80 e 90 – estimulando a prática de ciclismo na cidade.
No último sábado (27/8), o município e o Parque Fernão Dias fizeram um resgate importante da sua vocação para essa modalidade esportiva, ao receberem a segunda etapa do Bike Kids Cup, que integra a segunda etapa da Copa Brasil de MTB XCK (mountain bike infantil). O integrou as festividades do aniversário de 111 anos de Contagem.
A prefeita Marília Campos participou da largada de algumas categorias.“É muito simbólico para nós recebermos esse grande evento como parte do calendário de comemorações dos 111 anos de Contagem, potencializando a prática do ciclismo em Contagem. Nesse sentido, anunciaremos muito em breve, a construção de uma grande ciclovia em Contagem, com cerca de 10 km”, disse a prefeita.
O secretário municipal de Esportes, Lazer e Juventude, Rubens Macedo, destacou que o Bike Kids Cup se alinha às diretrizes da atual gestão de descentralização da oferta de serviços e pluralização das modalidades esportivas. “Antes Contagem tinha sua política pública centralizada no futebol. Vamos apoiar um conjunto maior de atividades, atendendo prestigiando um público maior de atletas”.
O diretor de Parques, da Secretaria Municipal de Meio Ambiente e Desenvolvimento Sustentável, Rafael Mendes, explicou que a realização da segunda etapa do Bike Kids Cup é mais uma etapa das ações de fomento às atividades do Fernão Dias. “Esse espaço viveu tempos áureos nas décadas de 80 e 90, justamente nas competições de ciclismo”.
Rafael destacou que durante os dez anos em que o parque esteve fechado, os próprios atletas do bicicross cuidaram da pista de BMX, o que garantiu que o local mantivesse suas condições para treino. “A população ama o parque. Por isso estamos investindo na reforma das quadras e buscando parcerias para a revitalização do velódromo e da pista de BMX, o que demanda um projeto especializado”.
A professora de Educação Física e empresária, Verônica Abreu, é mãe da atleta Lunna Abreu Mendes – que ficou em terceiro lugar na categoria Femi-mini-B. Nascida e criada no Monte Castelo, bairro vizinho ao parque, Verônica parabenizou a realização do evento. “É muito gratificante retornar ao Parque Fernão Dias, que fez parte da minha história. Contagem estava carente de atividades desse nível e por essa iniciativa deve ser parabenizada”.
