Cattle—colloquially cows—are the most common type of large domesticated ungulates. They are a prominent modern member of the subfamily Bovinae, are the most widespread species of the genus Bos, and are most commonly classified collectively as Bos taurus.

Cattle are commonly raised as livestock for meat (beef or veal, see beef cattle), for milk (see dairy cattle), and for hides, which are used to make leather. They are used as riding animals and draft animals (oxen or bullocks, which pull carts, plows and other implements). Another product of cattle is dung, which can be used to create manure or fuel. In some regions, such as parts of India, cattle have significant religious meaning. Cattle, mostly small breeds such as the Miniature Zebu, are also kept as pets.

Around 10,500 years ago, cattle were domesticated from as few as 80 progenitors in central Anatolia, the Levant and Western Iran. According to an estimate from 2011, there are 1.4 billion cattle in the world. In 2009, cattle became one of the first livestock animals to have a fully mapped genome.

Kudu, also known as the Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), is a magnificent antelope species found in various parts of sub-Saharan Africa. It is a large and majestic animal, renowned for its unique and striking appearance.

Physical Characteristics:

The Kudu is one of the largest antelope species, with males, known as bulls, weighing up to 600 kg (1,300 lbs) and standing around 1.5 to 1.7 meters (5 to 5.5 feet) tall at the shoulder. Females, known as cows, are smaller and lighter.

Both males and females have long, spiral-shaped horns. The horns can grow up to 1.8 meters (6 feet) in length in males, while in females, they are shorter and slimmer.

Appearance:

Kudus have a beautiful coat with distinctive white stripes along their sides. These stripes are believed to act as a form of camouflage in their woodland habitats, helping them blend in among dappled sunlight and shadow.

The coat coloration varies, but they are generally reddish-brown with a tinge of blue-grey in some areas. The undersides are usually pale.

Habitat and Behavior:

Kudus are found in a range of habitats, including woodlands, savannas, and dense bush areas. They are adaptable animals but prefer regions with enough vegetation for cover.

These antelopes are mainly browsers, feeding on leaves, fruits, and shoots. They have the ability to reach high branches to access food that other herbivores might not reach.

Kudus are predominantly nocturnal, which means they are most active during the night, helping them avoid predators and the heat of the day.

Males are typically solitary or found in small bachelor groups, while females form small herds, often accompanied by one dominant male.

Conservation Status:

The Kudu population is generally considered stable, but some local populations face threats due to habitat loss and hunting for their meat, hides, and horns.

Conservation efforts focus on preserving their natural habitats, implementing anti-poaching measures, and promoting responsible tourism to protect this iconic African species.

Kudus are not only remarkable creatures for their physical beauty but also for their role in maintaining the ecological balance of their habitats. As such, efforts to safeguard their existence are crucial for the overall health of Africa's biodiversity.

Boar Mill Cottage has it all; comfort, history, intrigue and a story to tell. As a former bakery, the three-bedroom stone cottage is teeming with quirky original features from the old bread oven in the dining room to remnants of the bakers’ implements still in the cottage. It sits in the shadows of the towering Corfe Castle in its eponymous village.

‘Fundacion Antonia Guerrero' (Antonia Guerrero Foundation) is by Joaquín Fabian Aguilera Diaz and was inaugurated in October 2013. It is a tribute to Antonia Guerrero and in recognition of her work to improve the education of women in Estepona. It is created in paint and relief and it depicts a girl going up the stairs of Los Remedios church. The doves which can be seen at the topic the mural represent the liberation and freedom for women.

"La Ruta de Murales Artísticos de Estepona" (Estepona’s Route of Artistic Murals) is an incentive implemented by the local council and the mayor, Jose Maria Garcia Urbano that was started in September 2012. The route is just one part of a local rejuvenation project.

The objective was to improve and enliven some of Estepona’s forgotten or neglected neighbourhoods and it was hoped that the series of murals that are spread across the town would put Estepona on the tourist map and make it a cultural destination. It was clearly a successful initiative and looking at the wide variety of murals it is clear to see why tourists and residents alike are eager to follow the route and view each of the murals (information by Marianne Hill).

Day 354. After spending a couple of days feeling under the weather and stuck in the house, I went on a short ride round the local woods with my son. We pass through a farm yard where there was laid out a random collection of rusty bit and pieces. I took a wider shot that's elsewhere on my photosteam, but for this shot I closed in on the rather intriguing pattern and texture of the of this old rusty implement that I guess was used to turn the soil on the field.

And now for something completely different. I was struck by the light and shadow on these implements in a mug on the kitchen counter.

Hope you are enjoying a beautiful week. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

This time of year it's probably the most iconic and photographed building in North Wales. When I took this shot at 8.00am on Saturday 26th September 2020, the air temperature was 5.5C and it was very cold. I wasn't alone. There were 8 other trusty souls who'd travelled from far and wide to take similar shots as the sun rose. Autumn sees its Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus Quinquefolia) which morphs from its Summer green into a vibrant colour ranging from reddish orange to burgundy during this time of year. I plan to return when the sky is much bluer too.

Tu Hwnt i'r Bont ( Beyond the Bridge) is considerably older than the Inigo Jones bridge it stands besides. Over the centuries it has fallen into disrepair several times and been rebuilt and restored through the generosity of the townsfolk.

During the last century, it was acquired by the National Trust who have since leased the building for over 50 years. The decision made by the original leaseholder to turn it into a traditional Welsh Tea Room has proved to be a great success.

Pleasingly, after implementing COVID requirements, it reopened on 21st July 2020 and it's well worth a visit!

Camera: Beacon Two-Twenty-Five, a low-end 1950s plastic camera with a 70mm doublet lens. The focus is fixed and ranges from about 5 1/2 feet to infinity. The shutter, at around 1/50 second, is best for daylight shots, but even small movements (such as the horse's ear) can result in blur. Overall, the camera is quite fun to shoot and I was very pleased at the quality of image produced by the doublet lens. The camera is called the "Two-Twenty-Five" because it produces 2.25-inch square images.

In the last months the DBS Br185.1s used along the Gotthard route had been withdrawed due to the ETCS implementation.

While some loks were working with SBB in domestic freight activities around Zurih Limathal, some Re10/10 were employed to haul also the DBS international trains from Basel to Chiasso.

Beyond the many mixed freight from Mannheim, also the "Winnerzug" Wuppertal-Piacenza had been entrusted to the Swiss loks.

Here the Re4/4.11183 and a Re6/6 are running just before the Biaschina Loops heading the southbound train. (30/10/15)

Bagan formerly Pagan is an ancient city from the 9th to 13th centuries,. The city was the capital of Myanmar. Bagan is one of Myanmar’s main attractions. It was the capital of Bagan empire, where Theravada Buddhism was the main religion. The area also known as the Bagan Archaeological Zone, occupies an impressive 26-sq-mile area. Marco Polo described Bagan as one of the finest sights in the world. Despite centuries of neglect, looting, erosion, regular earthquakes, not to mention questionable restoration, this temple-studded plain remains a remarkably impressive and unforgettable vision. Bagan’s kings commissioned more than 4000 Buddhist temples. The Ananda temple we visisted is considered to be one of the most surviving masterpiece of the Mon architecture. This impressive temple has also been titled the Westminster Abbey of Burma. Also known as the finest, largest, best preserved and most revered of the Bagan temples. During the 1975 earthquake, Ananda suffered considerable damage but has been totally restored. It is said to have been built around 1105 by King Kyanzittha.

Located just east of the city walls of Old Bagan, Ananda Pahto was the first of the great temples at Bagan and is one of the most largest and most beautiful. This symmetrical masterpiece was built around 1105 AD by a king inspired by tales of visiting Indian monks. The legend saying that there were 8 monks who arrived one day to the palace begging for alms. They told the king that once, they had lived in the Nandamula Cave temple in the Himalayas. The King was fascinated by the tales and invited the monks to return to his palace. The monks with their meditative powers they showed the king the mythical landscape of the place they have been. King Kyanzittha was overwhelmed by the sight and had a desire for building a temple which would be cool inside in the middle of the Bagan plains. After the construction of the Ananda temple, the king executed the architects just to make the style of the temple so unique. The whole architectural ornamentation is implemented in stucco-carving. Beautiful interior Buddha Statues can be seen in the niches from birth to death depicted in the passage. A Buddhist temple with bright, white cream-colored walls. Photo of a meditating monk holding alm bowl for donation in the corridor of the Ananda temple.

We fietsen langs alle bijzondere boeddhistische tempels in Bagan.

"Spreading a Little Sunshine" in Capitol Reef National Park.

I photographed this vintage farm implement, an old manure spreader, in a park that includes a lot of agricultural history. I grew up using a more modern version of this spreader, on our family dairy farm in eastern Oregon. Ours was pulled by a tractor, rather than a team of horses. Ours used the Power-Take-Off (PTO) from the tractor to convey the manure to the spinning tines at the end, which flung the dung out into the field; whereas, theirs was powered just by the horses and those large wheels connected to a series of gears. Either way, you didn't want to be near those spinning teeth at the back end, or you'd get "sunshine" in your face!

The hardest part of creating this photo was making sure the Photopills app was correctly calibrated on my cell phone, so that my Blue Hour camera/tripod alignment shot was correct for the Milky Way core, which wouldn't be visible for another 90 minutes.
