Juba, 10 December 2024: At a press conference in Juba, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, Nicholas Haysom, acknowledged the profound challenges facing South Sudan, including intercommunal conflict, the economic crisis, climate shocks and a rising cholera outbreak. While these challenges are real, he said, so is the tremendous opportunity to choose hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. "I call on South Sudan’s leaders to carry forward this hope by making every effort to recapture the optimism and good intentions that independence had brought to their people. The only way they can do so is by fully implementing the peace deal they themselves wrote into existence. I remain convinced that with decisive actions, a unified approach and moral courage, peace is not only possible, it’s inevitable."

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who has visited Ukraine for the fifth time since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.
"I’m grateful that throughout this war, you have consistently stood 100% on our side – on the side of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. You don’t need anyone to explain the details of this war to you because you were always in Ukraine during the most difficult periods. We could always count on you," said the President.
The President noted that during his visits, Josep Borrell always visits the regions, in particular, yesterday he visited the Chernihiv region.
In addition, Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked for the assistance to Ukraine from the European Union and its member states.
He also expressed gratitude to the European Union for the initiative to provide 1 million artillery shells. The partners will fully implement it by the end of this year.
The key topics of the meeting included further cooperation between Ukraine and the EU, increasing military assistance, lifting restrictions on strikes against military targets on Russian territory, unblocking support through the European Peace Facility, and completing all procedures to provide Ukraine with $50 billion, in line with the G7 decision.
