Kill Boss
...
The surgically implanted comm, seemingly hardwired into his brain, pulsed again, the message filling his mind like an audible migraine, somewhere between a buzz and an ache.
...
Kill Boss
...
It really didn't help that he had no idea who of where this Boss was, let alone why he was supposed to kill him. But kill him he would, anything for the chance to remove the stifling helm that appeared to be bolted directly to his spine.
...
Kill Boss
...
His hand tingled, the synthskin glove throbbing and almost alive, a previously inert surface lighting up. Stopping, he raised the hand, looking down, watching the hazy outline of a hologram appear. The target. The Boss.

Wisely, Step 10 does not emphasize a moral inventory, which becomes too self-absorbed and self-critical, but speaks instead of a “personal inventory.” In other words, just watch yourself objectively, calmly, and compassionately. You will be able to do this from your new viewing platform and perspective as a grounded child of God. “The Spirit will help us in our weakness” (Romans 8:26). From this most positive and dignified position, we can let go of, and even easily admit, our wrongs. We are being held so strongly and so deeply that we can stop holding onto, or defending, ourselves. God forever sees and loves Christ in us; it is only we who doubt our divine identity as children of God.
We now have an implanted position and power whereby we can see ourselves calmly and compassionately, without endless digging, labeling, judging, or the rancor that we usually have toward our own imperfection. Don’t judge, just look can be our motto— and now, with the very eyes of God. That will awaken consciousness, and then things will usually take care of themselves, with even the least bit of honesty and courage. A wonderful Indian Jesuit, Anthony de Mello (1931–1987), used to say, “Awareness, awareness, awareness!”…
… To be fully conscious would be to love everything, on some level and in some way—even our mistakes. To love is to fall into full consciousness, which is contemplative, non-dualistic, and includes everything—even “the last enemy to be destroyed, which is death itself” (1 Corinthians 15:26). That is why we must, absolutely must, love!

Cannon Ball Tree - At the corner of rue Saint-Louis and du Corps de Garde, a tree stands like an old soldier with a war wound, buried in its trunk is a reminder of a past battle there for all to see. A cannon ball is implanted inside its trunk. Whether it was shot directly into it is a matter of some speculation, but the fact that it's so firmly imbedded leads one to wonder just how it got there.
I intentionally rotated the image by 180 degree so that the sky becomes the reflections on a lake and vice versa, in hope to explore the beauty of nature from a different perspective. With the sky continuously changing its colors into dusk, it seems better to put down the camera and simply enjoy the moment.
About 5 years ago when visiting Taiwan Taitung Luye Township (台灣台東縣鹿野鄉) green tunnel (綠色隧道), a road with both sides planted with Madagascar Almond, we lied down in the middle of the road to view the sky, trees, and mountains (also known as "Thousands of people lying" 千人躺). That position offers a very unique and beautiful reflections-like perspective, which implanted in my mind for so many years. Later, I found that lying down to view the firework or to view the starry night is truly a wonderful and exciting experience, especially together with dear friend.

Walking around Brockton MA, overwhelmed with memories from my youth. Spotted this old tricycle and immediately identified with it as maybe something from those old days, but then noticed the "Made in China" stamp, so it was an item manufactured to imitate some vintage object, and yet it too is rusting and unusable. Even our prefab fake memories are getting long in the tooth.

***************
This set of photos is based on a very simple concept: walk every block of Manhattan with a camera, and see what happens. To avoid missing anything, walk both sides of the street.
That's all there is to it …
Of course, if you wanted to be more ambitious, you could also walk the streets of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. But that's more than I'm willing to commit to at this point, and I'll leave the remaining boroughs of New York City to other, more adventurous photographers.
Oh, actually, there's one more small detail: leave the photos alone for a month -- unedited, untouched, and unviewed. By the time I actually focus on the first of these "every-block" photos, I will have taken more than 8,000 images on the nearby streets of the Upper West Side -- plus another several thousand in Rome, Coney Island, and the various spots in NYC where I traditionally take photos. So I don't expect to be emotionally attached to any of the "every-block" photos, and hope that I'll be able to make an objective selection of the ones worth looking at.
As for the criteria that I've used to select the small subset of every-block photos that get uploaded to Flickr: there are three. First, I'll upload any photo that I think is "great," and where I hope the reaction of my Flickr-friends will be, "I have no idea when or where that photo was taken, but it's really a terrific picture!"
A second criterion has to do with place, and the third involves time. I'm hoping that I'll take some photos that clearly say, "This is New York!" to anyone who looks at it. Obviously, certain landscape icons like the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty would satisfy that criterion; but I'm hoping that I'll find other, more unexpected examples. I hope that I'll be able to take some shots that will make a "local" viewer say, "Well, even if that's not recognizable to someone from another part of the country, or another part of the world, I know that that's New York!" And there might be some photos where a "non-local" viewer might say, "I had no idea that there was anyplace in New York City that was so interesting/beautiful/ugly/spectacular."
As for the sense of time: I remember wandering around my neighborhood in 2005, photographing various shops, stores, restaurants, and business establishments -- and then casually looking at the photos about five years later, and being stunned by how much had changed. Little by little, store by store, day by day, things change … and when you've been around as long as I have, it's even more amazing to go back and look at the photos you took thirty or forty years ago, and ask yourself, "Was it really like that back then? Seriously, did people really wear bell-bottom jeans?"
So, with the expectation that I'll be looking at these every-block photos five or ten years from now (and maybe you will be, too), I'm going to be doing my best to capture scenes that convey the sense that they were taken in the year 2013 … or at least sometime in the decade of the 2010's (I have no idea what we're calling this decade yet). Or maybe they'll just say to us, "This is what it was like a dozen years after 9-11".
Movie posters are a trivial example of such a time-specific image; I've already taken a bunch, and I don't know if I'll ultimately decide that they're worth uploading. Women's fashion/styles are another obvious example of a time-specific phenomenon; and even though I'm definitely not a fashion expert, I suspected that I'll be able to look at some images ten years from now and mutter to myself, "Did we really wear shirts like that? Did women really wear those weird skirts that are short in the front, and long in the back? Did everyone in New York have a tattoo?"
Another example: I'm fascinated by the interactions that people have with their cellphones out on the street. It seems that everyone has one, which certainly wasn't true a decade ago; and it seems that everyone walks down the street with their eyes and their entire conscious attention riveted on this little box-like gadget, utterly oblivious about anything else that might be going on (among other things, that makes it very easy for me to photograph them without their even noticing, particularly if they've also got earphones so they can listen to music or carry on a phone conversation). But I can't help wondering whether this kind of social behavior will seem bizarre a decade from now … especially if our cellphones have become so miniaturized that they're incorporated into the glasses we wear, or implanted directly into our eyeballs.
If you have any suggestions about places that I should definitely visit to get some good photos, or if you'd like me to photograph you in your little corner of New York City, please let me know. You can send me a Flickr-mail message, or you can email me directly at ed-at-yourdon-dot-com
Stay tuned as the photo-walk continues, block by block ...
Implant.
Whilst having a delve into my PCB drawer the other day I found one from the ever awesome Mart Barras, which he very kindly posted to me a while back. Cheers again fella.
This one is extra special as its level of light transmission is so good and the patterns contained within are beautiful.
An idea came to me whilst watching a music video from Thom Yorke where his face is superimposed on a very android, humanoid form whilst it explores a Martian terrain.
I needed a bit of help from Lauren in firing the shutter and turning off the kitchen light before the exposure started. This ensured my hand position was bang on.
That was on tripod 1 with the Nikon 20mm on the camera. Tripod and lens swap to the Minolta 50mm on the macro tubes. Pointing at the PCB, under-lit by a torch so as to just illuminate the area of the board which I though looked best.
Looked better in mono and so it was.
Single long exposure shot in complete darkness.
Microchip implant in humans have raised new ethical discussions by scientific professional forums, academic groups, human rights organizations, government departments and religious groups. The Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA) of the American Medical Association published a report in 2007 alleging that RFID implanted chips may compromise privacy because there is no assurance that the information contained in the chip can be properly protected, notwithstanding health risks (chips may travel under the skin).
RFID tagging has been criticised by believers of Abrahamic religions. In Christianity, some believe the implantation of chips may be the fulfillment of The Mark of the Beast, prophesied to be a requirement for buying and selling, and a key element of the Book of Revelation. In Judaism, Conservative, Orthodox, and Reform Jewish beliefs hold that that cutting, piercing or marking the flesh, a requirement for implantation, is contrary to the notion that people were made "in the image of God", and the orders in Leviticus 19:28. Islam also considers body modifications "haram", an Arabic term meaning "forbidden", because they involve changing the body, a creation of God. The health risks associated with implantable microchips described above may also invoke Islamic prohibitions.

...:: BEGIN LOG ::...
The exciting events on Vandos Prime left the legion exhausted. So as such, Sergeant Jester sent us to a less demanding post...or so we thought.
The mission started simple, just corral the locals. The Correlian workers party seemed to have done something behind the Republic’s back. Riots were popping up all over the holomap. Most of the 253rd got sent to the shipyards to stop the increasing riot activity creeping towards the shipyards. We needed those shipyards, and bad. The Republic’s Galactic Navy was suffering in the Starfighter department. Many losses above planets such as Agamar and Aeos Prime, had weakened the Republics strength.
Really, we were fighting for the entire Republic, for our brothers in the skies, space and beyond. I hoped my brothers in arms realized this. I really did, these guys seemed more driven by violence than actual goal. But I forgave them, they were my brothers after all.
-
The gunships made a quick landing in some of the shipyards to let the legion off. Looking across the skyline I could see ware houses and massive mechanical structures. But more specifically I could see the other sergeants and lieutenants jumping off their Gunships with such purpose and drive. They looked amazing, fighting for a cause they’ve always believed in. My mind drifted towards thoughts beyond the visor, beyond the Republic, but only for a second as Sergeant Dagger’s armored hand came down on my left shoulder pauldron. Surprised I reached for my vibroknife attached to my chest plate. Then I heard the words:
“Hey, hey calm down CT-1287.”
“It’s Redwing.”
“Yes of course. My bad, are you alright sarge? You seem...on edge.”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I grudgingly said. I had forgotten where I was or where my head was rather and thanked Dagger for the check in. We clasped hands and bumped chests, ou pauldrons clanged as we released.
We jumped out of the Gunship simultaneously and clattered to the ground. Our armor wasn’t as silent as it had looked from a distance. We parted ways and wished each other good luck. Dagger was going head on into the riots, my squad and I would find our own problem to deal with.

...:: BEGIN LOG ::...
This log begins in the caverns that I reported my squad and I planted our explosives in. After placing the last detonation switch and evacuating the platform we rushed into the mine shafts lift, it was cramped and small but we all fit. I wanted to try this new microchip that I was told saved you from having to write a log after the mission. I was all for that idea, but not all for another chip in my head. I had already received Bacta-Implants as part of the ARC program, and my squad was on of the first to test integrated squad comms. This grants us the ability to communicate long range without our helmets or armor. Hasn’t been needed yet, but it has been a convenience. So, I was already ready for the implant when my trooper asked.
“Are you ready?” CT-4283 asked me.
I muttered “Yes.” and braced for the piercing feeling I had gotten so familiar with. The chips sides dig into my skin in the center of my neck, it felt like the small legs of a Flii digging into my back. I could sense the wires Branch down through my skin and contact my spinal cord, my body jerked and I threw my body upward.
Startled, CT-4383 and nearby squad mates reached out to support my limp body back down to the lift’s floor.
“Are you alright sarge?” CT-5712 asked calmly.
Struggling to reply, I could only mutter a weak “Y...e...s...yes.”
I reached for the back of my head and felt the new metal plate, wedged in my skin above my spine and between the older plates. A shock ran into my finger and up my arm, the shock jolted me upright and onto my feet. I cracked my neck and reached for my helmet, I was ready to get back to the Gunships.
The journey back to the Gunships was a long one, the attack had been amusing, fun even as my troopers and I jumped into trench after trench, and making quick work of the cowering Vandosians. The way back would be less sporadic and exciting as we had to look out for Vandosian snipers in the ruins. Knowing this, I commanded my troops to take the high ground and we led an op on the laboratory’s roofs. The Vandosian plant was a large long building, similar to some testing grounds at the Felucia base I visited after ARC training. The top was covered in odd angles and bumps and cylinders, presumably for exhaust and chemicals.
The ruins lay covered in white armor, the black and gray armor of the natives was rare among the see of white pauldrons and pads. After my troops and I had sifted our way through the sea of armor, I had realized how much death had occurred on our assualt. Vandosian bodies started to populate the sea and I realized these people had dealt with enough damage for a day, for weeks, years even. The detonator slipped from my hand as I crushed it with my boot. I was wary of an explosion in the background, hoping I hadn’t set off a chain of explosions that would take down the planet, like the Jedi had foretold. But only a small tremor shook my plastoid boots. Relief rolled over me as I felt I might have saved these people. I might have destroyed a structural beam, but I also had hopefully interrupted the planned chain of explosions.
Waking from my dreams of being a savor and hero, I felt heat brush my shoulder pauldron. Another came whizzing past my helmet, ducking down and looking over the edge I could see a cluster of white armor amidst the white snow. The group cluttered in circles, knocking one against another. A red bolt of energy flew into on of the armored bodies and sent it flying out into the white field. A sniper had hit!
My eyed darted towards the source, a Vandosian has camped up behind one of the large exhaust cylinders. My men and I all knew what had to be done, we leapt from roof to roof, over one body and another. A trooper had reached the culprit before I had, I could see the timid soldier turn slowly and place their heavy weapon to the side as they raised one hand.
Trudging towards the what seemed like a young girl, I felt remorse and sadness for coming up against such a hopeless enemy. Standing just inches from the girl I could see her fear.
So scared, so afraid. Not of anyone, but of our armor.
Her eyes darted from plastoid hand to blaster barrel.
Her eyes
Were blue
Like the crystals that brought us here
Her eyes
Ignited with emotionemotion
Her hand
Launched towards her sniper.
My hand
Flew towards my holster and pointed towards her.
PEW!!
My blaster pistol held it’s place suspended in air above the girl and her fearful eyes returned from their angry state.
My blaster dropped to the ground and I reached to her eyes and closed her eyelids.
She
and I had seen enough.

Two weeks ago I had two cardiac surgical procedures. I was on the operating table for four hours.
The first procedure was an atria flutter ablation to kill the misfiring cells in the upper atrial chambers that were making my heart race at about 107 beats per second (BPS.). The operation was successful. However, when the lower chambers took over, the pulse was weak, only 20 BPS. A second surgical procedure was needed to implant a pacemaker.
Fortunately this second procedure was also successful.
I have almost recovered completely. My heart rate in bed is about 60 BPS. When moving around or sitting, my heart rate is about 72 BPS.
I am very lucky. Praise The Lord🙏 And Pass The Ammunition🚀

Guêpier d'Europe
Merops apiaster
