"Uh . . . I think there are at least two others, Mama. Is that okay?"

COP26 Climate change protest at Devonshire Green, Sheffield
Obviously, I went to the protest but I had the idea of doing a different sort of protest photo. So rather than snapping huge crowd scenes or angry impassioned faces, I thought that it might be nice to just catch ordinary people, being ordinary but out in the street - a sort of humanising approach. I think this shot probably works the best in this respect.

Perdita Paynesworth-
Perdita Paynesworth and school never were a good fit. As she drew closer to graduation, it was clear that the contest would be neck and neck as to whether she would first receive a full education, or completely lose her sanity. In the hope that it would help, it was arranged that she finish her learning at a boarding school which several of her female relatives had attended. Perdita complained in impassioned letters home that she was inundated by so much inane chatter from vapid classmates that she could scarcely hear the voices speaking inside her own head. Withdrawing from her fellow students, Perdita found a disused attic and furnished it with items from adjoining rooms. In this self imposed isolation, she remained at the school and graduated, an event that was widely celebrated by students and staff alike. As is so often the case, Perdita convinced herself in the end that high school was the best time of her life. She is content to believe that the institution in which she is currently enrolled is her old academy. She even still wears the uniform about which she complained so vociferously.

Colletes aestivalis. Rare? or Not Rare? This is a Heuchera specialist. Heuchera is planted everywhere, why is the species not seen and seen by some as a potential species of concern. A few things pilgrim. First most of the Heuchera out there are part of a hybrid Heuchera swarm (I like the ring of that phrase, but, sadly, it will not often come up in casual conversation). OK, so C. aestivalis is not interested in these hybrids. Also, wild Heuchera is hard to find and its little brown be hard to see. We now know of several populations some from areas where H. americana have been planted. So, 2 lessons. 1. Plant H. americana. 2. Look for bees on H. americana and maybe our friend will be there. Brooke Goggins took the picture and the specimen was found in Virginia, but I can't recall which group!

The Case of Excessive Wasp Bling. OK, there is something about metallic insects that is so attractively unsubtle. Even though I have several other pictures of Chrysidid wasps like this one, I can't help but have another taken. So, there you go. Ponder while reveling in all this metallic armor, why be so conspicuous if your m.o. is to invade other wasp and bee nests? At least to humans. There are 6 families of bees in North America. The bee here Melitta melittoides is member of Melittidae. Melittidae has only 2 genera of bees in the East. Most of them are highly specialized. Our friend here is a Lyonia (maleberry) specialist. In the face shot of the female...check out the size of those mandibles. I am not sure what their use is, but it would be either in opening up flowers or some sort of nesting function. I know of no other bee that has anything close to that shape. Collected on Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Anne Arundel County Maryland.

Amegilla stantoni - Philippines. I believe collected 100 years ago by the famous Bee Collector C.F. Baker. This species is restricted to the Philippines, while is blue bands shimmer slightly less after100 years, they are still visible. About the size of and in a left handed way related to Anthophora.
