The Lincoln Imp is the symbol of the City of Lincoln, the county town of Lincolnshire, England.
'According to a 14th-century legend two mischievous creatures called imps were sent by Satan to do evil work on Earth. After causing mayhem in Northern England, the two imps headed to Lincoln Cathedral where they smashed tables and chairs and tripped up the Bishop. When an angel came out of a book of hymns and told them to stop, one of the imps was brave and started throwing rocks at the angel but the other imp cowered under the broken tables and chairs. This is Hamilton Joe Frank And Reynolds. He's an Imp. In Impish culture, music of all kinds is revered and enjoyed, and Imp parents often name their children after their favorite musical artists. Hamilton Joe Frank And Reynolds is his full name...yes, including the "And". His father is named "Emerson Lake And Palmer", so Hamilton Joe Frank And Reynolds is continuing on in a rich Impish tradition. Around here we call him "Ham" for short, though. And in case you were wondering, his mother's name is "Bangles".
I saw this little imp statue grinning on the roof of a little kiosk (advertising Marks and Spencer), and I photographed it when I saw that it was wearing roller-blades. I'm sure that imps and cherubs and the like would have been pictured in roller-blades in Renaissance times had they been around.
