The World Polio Day 2025 theme, “End polio, for every child, with every vaccine, everywhere,” is a global reminder of the power of immunization, the strength of collective action, and the urgency of ending polio for good. Since Somalia’s first national polio campaign in 1997, we’ve made remarkable progress. In 2014, Somalia declared the eradication of wild poliovirus—a moment in history made possible by the leadership of the Somali government and the support of partners including UNICEF, WHO, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
Since 2022, under the Ministry’s leadership, UNICEF has supported the rollout of the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 — an effective tool against vaccine-derived polio. In 2024, the establishment of the National Task Force on Immunization and Polio, led by His Excellency the Prime Minister, reflects the strong political commitment. UNICEF is proud to support this initiative with technical expertise, operational support, and community engagement.
These collaborative efforts have led to a new milestone met this year, as Somalia introduced 2 new vaccines into the national childhood immunization schedule to combat pneumonia and diarrhoea, the leading killers of children under five.
According to the latest WHO and UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage, 70 per cent of children under one year old in Somalia are now fully vaccinated—a significant improvement after a decade of stagnation. Additionally, the number of children who have never received a vaccine, called zero-dose, has dropped by 63 per cent, marking real progress.
Despite these grand efforts, outbreaks of vaccine-derived polio, measles and diphtheria persist, highlighting the need to close the immunization gaps and increase vaccination campaigns. We know that Polio vaccines are safe, effective, and our strongest defense against paralysis and death.
UNICEF is calling on governments and partners to place polio eradication at the forefront of national health priorities and to accelerate broader immunization and primary health care efforts.
Ending polio is a shared responsibility, and to achieve a polio-free Somalia, we must ensure that every child is fully vaccinated, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach areas. We need increased flexible and equitable financing for health systems. Timely surveillance and responses to outbreaks, along with strengthened cross-border coordination, are necessary. And finally, we need to engage caregivers, communities and all stakeholders to stop misinformation and build vaccine confidence.
The final steps toward polio eradication are the most critical. Let us renew our promise to every Somali child: To protect them from polio and all vaccine-preventable diseases.

I'm pretty sure i'm a needle phobic. Ever since i was a kid i've always hated shots and blood tests.
well as my first semester of college is arriving i'm due for some shots so i don't get meningitis and die. Sigh.
