Activists and concerned citizens rallied outside of the McCormack Building before the Emergency Assistance Shelter Commission Meeting concerning Governor Healey announcement on July 23rd that new policies will prioritize certain children and families for Emergency Assistance (EA) shelter and force other families to choose: stay 5 days in a temporary overflow shelter and then become ineligible for EA shelter for 6 months, or remain on the EA waiting list even if they have nowhere else to go. These policies went into effect on August 1st and will leave many children and families awaiting EA shelter placement with no safe place to sleep at night. Tens of thousands of protesters gathered at Lafayette Park near the White House on Saturday, May 1 to agitate for the reform of immigration laws. Protesters were opposed to draconian new immigration laws passed by the state of Arizona, which they further categorized as institutionalized racial profiling. Many were arrested during a sit-in in front of the White House, including Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D- Illinois).
