Minister of Immigration Jason Kenney holds a press conference at the National Press Theatre in Ottawa on Thursday November 29, 2012. Kenney says an overhaul of the refugee system goes into effect Dec. 15. The biggest change will see the government draw up a list of countries from which refugee claims will be scrutinized more closely. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean Kilpatrick
My attempt at citizen's journalism. A small but dedicated contingent of pro-immigration protesters gathered outside the HUB while I was leaving. Snapped up a pic. When I got to my class (across the street), everyone was gathered at the window watching.

Like all human beings, Idaho’s immigrants deserve respect for their dignity and human rights, regardless of their immigration status. This has yet to become a reality. Though immigrants bring prosperity to Idaho, they are often denied the opportunity to share in that prosperity.
Immigration is stimulated by economic forces and policies that immigrants do not control – and from which they may not even benefit. Historically immigrants were sought after and recruited by employers, and Idaho businesses still rely on immigrant workers – as do the customers and clients of these businesses. And the economy of the United States as a whole increasingly depends on immigrants. Yet the immigration system established by the U.S. federal government is out of touch with this reality.
U.S. immigration policy denies the means to acquiring official status and citizenship to millions of immigrants who are leading lives much like those of their native-born neighbors – working, raising families, participating in community activities, paying taxes. Without official status, many immigrants have no real security for the future. They will never be able to access the benefits to which they have contributed, and they remain vulnerable to violations of the most basic of rights. This system creates inequalities that harm all who live in Idaho, whether immigrants or Idaho-born.

As a first generation Canadian myself, it was interesting to see this extensive museum dealing with immigration. One of the main themes was that Canada has always wanted and needed people to come to Canada as immigrants to build the country. However, there were concurrently widespread feelings of antisemitism, racism and xenophobia still deeply rooted in hearts of many Canadians, and so immigrants were not always treated very well once they were here.

We came across this incredible videoclip in Immigration Museum, Skywalk, Boston, in March 2005. There was a white rapper (in the video, cut down to 90 sec. by Flickr, unfortunately) on one screen and a black one right next to it, taking turns to ridicule the style of the immigration officers interviewing would-be immigrants to the Land of the Free. Hilarous! (The laughter in the background is Mike's and Naomi's).
The Eagle EDS facilities meet the highest level of Human Rights detention housing while being processed into the U.S. The facility offers climate comfort, security and personal hygiene while waiting to comply with our legal and international obligations. The EDS system can be moved to accommodate other national regions of immigration detentions. We must be prepared for traditional, seasonal increases in illegal migration. These facilities will provide invaluable surge capacity should apprehensions of adults with children once again surge.
