Professor John Grenville, Professor Emeritus at Birmingham University, studied history at LSE under Sir Charles Webster, first as an undergraduate, graduating with a First Class Honours degree in 1951, and then as a graduate student. He was awarded the Hutchinson Medal for his PhD in 1953, which was later published by the London University Press as Lord Salisbury and Foreign Policy, the Close of the Nineteenth Century. As a refugee from Germany, his original name was Hans Jurgen Guhrauer and changed his name in 1949.
