The Palio di Siena (known locally simply as Il Palio) is a horse race held twice each year on July 2 and August 16 in Siena, Italy, in which ten horses and riders, dressed in the appropriate colours, represent ten of the seventeen Contrade, or city wards.
The race itself, in which the jockeys ride bareback, involves circling the Piazza del Campo, on which a thick layer of dirt has been laid, three times and usually last no more than 90 seconds.

After three years of waiting, this year we were able to return to Siena for this magnificent event and it lived up to all our expectations. Excitement, drama, spectacle. Delay due to rain but it ended with a perfect race - for Leocorno at least. In between the events in Siena we enjoyed some easy hikes in the Tuscan countryside and a fun cooking class.

"The Palio is a historical secular tradition strictly connected with the origin of the Contradas of Siena (districts into which the town is divided). The Contradas are spectacular agonistic institutions each having their own government, oratory, coat of arms, appellations, sometimes titles of nobility, emblems and colours, official representatives, festivities, patron Saints, with protectors, delimited territories and population which consist of all those people who were born or live within the topographic limits of the district, according to the proclamation issued by Violante Beatrice of Bavaria on January 7, 1730, at that time, Governess of the town"

Ward of the Unicorn - waiting for a blessing for Siena's Palio

Taken in San Gimignano, Tuscany in Italy. The Palio of Sienna is a medieval style horse race run around a huge piazza in Sienna twice a year (on 2nd July and 16th August). On the day we were in San Gimignano many tourists stopped at café, bar or restaurant windows in order to watch the races.

Il Palio is named for the annual Tuscany bareback horserace through the streets of Siena, the city that gave the hotel its name.

"I found sum spares wot mite fit, so it ain't so bad.
It's a pikchur of sum 'orse race in It'ly called Il Pally-o, like the Kentucky Derby but faster. Me an' Dad sumtimes watches the 'orse racin' on the telly on Sat'day afternoons, while we're doin' our pussels. It drives Mum mad cuz we keeps switchin' channels to catch the footie results too!"
