Quadra Island

"Quadra Island was named for a Spanish explorer who sailed this coast in the [18th] century: Don Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra. Happily, that was shortened to Quadra...."

- Hilary Stewart, "On Island Time," p. 183

"From one end to the other, Quadra Island measure 37 km (23 miles) as the eagle flies. Its wide northern end, rising up in rocky bluffs and mountainous peaks, is short on roads and population, but to make up for that it has a scattering of lovely lakes and a sprawl of hiking trails. Some areas here still are old growth, but almost all of the island's forests are second growth dating from the late [19th] to the early [20th] century. As yet the island is still largely forested, but clearcut logging marches on--sometimes too close for comfort.

"The island's contours seem to have been largely cut out with a fretsaw, creating an abundance of bays, coves, harbours and headlands along its ragged coast, with the leftover bits flung aside to form offshore islands...all along with Quadra itself, part of the Discovery Islands of the east coast of Vancouver Island. Beaches are few--mostly pebbly--and all of them surrender to a full moon's high tide.

"Southward, the broad bulk of Quadra slims down considerably. The village of Heriot Bay is clustered around a heritage hotel, docks, wharfs, stores, a post office and houses. Rural roads meander their way between Heriot Bay and Quathiaski Cove, sprouting occasional side roads. Long driveways heading off into forested properties indicate a larger population than in the north.

"Quathiaski Cove, generally referred to as 'the Cove,' also has stores, a post office, docks, wharfs, a lot of fishboats, a pub and a sprinkling of houses among trees.

"The southernmost end of the island terminates in a high sandy bluff. Wide expanses of rock and boulder-strewn beaches, bare at low tide, wrap around the cape named for Zachary Mudge, a ship's office who came ashore there in 1792 with explorer Captain George Vancouver."

- Hilary Stewart, "On Island Time," 1998, pp. 27-28

Pressures on land - I recently contributed illustration for the DEFRA Natural Environment White Paper, which is launched today. DEFRA - The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is a government department in the UK. You can download the Natural Environment White Paper here

www.defra.gov.uk/environment/natural/whitepaper/

The Natural Environment White Paper is a bold and ambitious statement outlining the Government’s vision for the natural environment over the next 50 years, backed up with practical action to deliver that ambition.

Nature is sometimes taken for granted and undervalued. But people cannot flourish without the benefits and services our natural environment provides. A healthy, properly functioning natural environment is the foundation of sustained economic growth, prospering communities and personal wellbeing.

I've been working with advertising agency VCCP on the new summer advertising campaign for Southern Railway, imagining the rail network & many of the regions tourist attractions as a theme park. It's being given away as a fold out map outside some of London's main stations today & more uses in the pipeline. Can you find Loco Toledo, the campaigns Mexican Wrestler?

Crazy amounts of detail again, so you might want to zoom in!

1926 Auburn 8-88 Roadster

The first line of Auburns developed under the direction of E.L. Cord was the 8-88 Series. It was introduced in 1925 and it helped establish Auburn as a marque of distinction. The introduction of the hood and body molding, a reasonably priced eight-cylinder line, and multi-colored paint schemes distinguished Auburns apart from other automobiles. The average automobile manufacturer had a one-percent sales increase for the 1926 model year; Auburn enjoyed an increase of fifty-two percent.

Power is from a 299 cubic-inch Lycoming eight-cylinder engine that delivers 72 horsepower. The wheelbase measures 129 inches and the car weighs 3180 pounds. The price of the 8-88 roadster in 1926 was $1,695.

The Model 8's were given a wide-ratio three-speed gearbox and rested on either a 125- or 130-inch wheelbase, depending on the model. The 8-115 had the larger size.

Rod Hunt was commissioned to design a bus sculpture for Transport for London's Year of the Bus Sculpture Trail taking place in London from 20th October 2014 to early December. The launch event took place in London's Trafalgar Square on 17th October 2014. Rod's bus will be on display in Victoria Street, SW1 from October 20th for seven weeks.

Quote: “I found inspiration by looking at the Key Bus Routes in central London map & seeing that it almost looks like the map is spelling the word "Bus" in the route lines.”

Up to 60 New Routemaster bus sculptures will be unveiled across London in October as part of celebrations to mark the Year of the Bus. The bus sculptures, which are 2.5m long, 1m high and 0.5m wide, will be painted and adorned by well-known and aspiring artists to showcase the vital role that London’s buses play in the life and economy of the city and the UK as a whole.

Londoners and visitors to the city will get the chance to discover the bus sculptures, which will be organised in clusters, on foot by following public art trails in five areas of the capital – three in central London and two in outer London.

Blackpool is the most popular seaside resort in the UK with in excess of 10 million visitors a year & has been undergoing a major Multi-million Pound renovation. The new map is the first to show the resort has a whole experience rather than as individual attractions.

Attractions include the Blackpool Tower, Pleasure Beach, SeaLife Centre, Blackpool Zoo, Madame Tussauds, North Pier, Sandcastle Waterpark, Winter Gardens, Trams & the new Comedy Carpet. There's a crazy amount of detail, so please click the image to enlarge.
