I went out for a cold, winter walk at a local watershed. I didn't think I'd find very much to photograph. They've just done a controlled burn and the plants are dormant. Was I surprised at how much texture I found.
It's sometimes difficult to photograph in the summer where the greens of the trees create a uniformity in the scene. Look for contrasts and light that isolates a tree. One of my favorite waterfalls in southern Illinois. 100 foot tall and flows almost year-round. It's just a stone's throw from Fern Clyffe.
You can hike in from the road - but it is a pretty rocky road to get down. Probably impassible at times. I put my car on a safe stretch of road and walk in. You have to cross over the top of the falls to get to the trail. All was fine on my way over. On my way back, I sat down hard on the rocks. I'm still a little sore!
The little memorial at the top of the falls reminds you to be careful. It's quite a drop.

This cairn was a welcome sight on the hike down to Burden Falls in the Shawnee National Forest. A few of these mark the point where the trail crosses the stream. I have a whole philosophy of life built around cairns. The cairn is a concrete image – a touchstone – that I can hold in my mind as a point of meditation or as a simple reminder of how I want to live my life. The Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville is a local landmark. It was built in 1909. From 1984 until the early 2000s, it was closed. The building has since been renovated and in normal years hosts concerts and other events. It's nice to see the lights blazing on Main street on a damp evening.
We went to the Riverlands in Alton, Illinois to photograph Trumpeter Swans - they seem to be late this year - slept in, I guess. But instead, photographed this eagle trying to catch a duck. He swooped and the duck -- ducked. Over and over. See what happens next....
