Male greater prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido) of the grouse family (Phasianidae) vying for dominance in the mating lek in a managed prairie in south-central Illinois.
Once common on the Great Plains, the population of the greater prairie chicken has sharply declined due to the conversion of natural prairies to agricultural land. With the population still in decline, the species is considered vulnerable. Numerous initiatives are attempting to provide suitable habitat and stimulate population growth. The birds in this shot are from such an initiative in south-central Illinois.

This scene drives me crazy. But whenever I find myself in this part of Chicago, I feel the need to photograph it. You always see someone taking the picture and they probably don't recognize the problem that an OCD, lined up, symmetrical guy like me would notice.
I'm not sure who screwed up, but if I had a time machine, this is something that I would get fixed. Dang it!
You stand in the middle of the intersection one block north of the Board of Trade building, and shoot. Youse takes yer life in your hands, but anything for the shot, right? So many people do this, I'm surprised they don't set up a little concrete reinforced capsule for photographers to stand in to avoid getting kilt by da traffic.

I went out for a cold, winter walk at a local watershed. I didn't think I'd find very much to photograph. They've just done a controlled burn and the plants are dormant. Was I surprised at how much texture I found.

It's sometimes difficult to photograph in the summer where the greens of the trees create a uniformity in the scene. Look for contrasts and light that isolates a tree. Believe it or not, this is not HDR. The sky was amazing all on it's own, no enhancement required.

Ice in Ice.
Out for sunrise this morning in Grafton. I'm not sure why, but I became completely obsessed with this bright Ice Machine sitting in a dark, empty parking lot.
The Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville is a local landmark. It was built in 1909. From 1984 until the early 2000s, it was closed. The building has since been renovated and in normal years hosts concerts and other events. It's nice to see the lights blazing on Main street on a damp evening.
Actually, I followed this storm cloud from Rochelle, Illinois back to just west of Wheaton, Illinois. Shot this from Pritchard Road in Maple Park. Going any further east and I would have lost the visual effect of the rain coming out of it, too. Such a rainy month this has been, hasn't it?
I haven't been on Flickr much the past week or so. Playing catch up now. Have a great week everyone :-)
I was surprised when I looked at this on my computer - this is pretty dang close to lined up. Not perfectly - I detect a little non-alignment. But dang! And particularly since it's a moving object. Yes, this bridge is moving. See the previous picture for a wider angle to show the bridge at a different point in the swing.

Drove up to the old Santa Fe grade crossing at Rt 26, got out of the vehicle, and was just in time to see two FAST moving freights go by, one eastbound, one west. The blue & white diesel in this photo is a leased unit, heading up a fast moving westbound stack train.
Interesting note: I intentionally set my Olympus zoom on 25mm, which is the exact same as a 50mm in 35mm SLR photography. No telephoto or wide-angle, just a nice, boring straght-forward wedge shot of a passing train, just as you would have seen it had you been standing next to me.

Thank you all!
Hope you are all having a better night/morning than I am. Just back from the e.r. from another SVT heart episode. Any of you know about e.p. studies and ablations? Off to get some sleep.

Been busy in life lately but my wife and I celebrated her birthday gift (this concert) and Valentines Day date together. What an amazing place, inside and out.I didn’t have the nerve to ask her to humor me taking night images in Waukegan, except for this image on our way in. Concert was amazing and I’ll be back for some serious night shooting!
