Die Jungfraubahn (JB) ist eine Zahnradbahn im Berner Oberland in der Schweiz. Sie führt
von der K.leinen S.cheidegg durch E.iger und M.önch bis aufs J.ungfraujoch, überwindet
auf einer L.änge von rund 9 Kilometer fast 1`400 H.öhenmeter und etwas mehr als 7
Kilometer der Strecke liegen im T.unnel.

Geschichte

Ab etwa 1.8.6.0 gab es verschiedene Pläne für eine Bergbahn auf die J.ungfrau, die aber
alle aufgrund finanzieller Probleme scheiterten.
So entwarf 1.8.7.0 der Nationalrat Friederich Seiler, am 1.6. O.ktober 1.8.8.9 Maurice Koechlin
und am 2.2. O.ktober 1.8.8.9 Alexander Trautweiler ein Projekt für eine Jungfraubahn.
Am 1. J.uli 1.8.9.0 stellt Eduard Locher ein Konzessionsgesuch für eine Jungfraubahn und
erhielt 1.8.9.1 zusammen mit Koechlin eine B.aubewilligung für deren P.rojekt.
Die Ausführung kam aber nicht zustande. 1.8.9.2 wurde die Konzession für eine E.igerbahn
erteilt, welche aber auch nie ausgeführt wurde.
Am 2.0. D.ezember 1.8.9.3 bewarb sich der Industrielle A.dolf G.uyer - Z.eller um eine
Konzession für eine Zahnradbahn, die an der B.ahnstation der W.engernalpbahn ( W.A.B )
auf der K.leinen S.cheidegg beginnen und in einem langen T.unnel durch das M.assiv
von E.iger und M.önch bis hinauf auf den G.ipfel der J.ungfrau führen sollte.
Am 2.1. D.ezember 1.8.9.4 erteilte der B.undesrat diese Konzession.
G.uyer plante von Anfang an einen elektrischen Betrieb für die Jungfraubahn und sicherte
sich daher die W.asserrechte an beiden L.ütschinen und erhielt am 1.0. J.uni 1.8.9.6 die
Konzession zum Bau der K.raftwerke.

Bau

Am 2.7. J.uli 1.8.9.6 erfolgte der erste Spatenstich zum Bau der Jungfraubahn.
Trotz des Anschlusses an die W.engernalpbahn wählte man eine andere Spurweite
(1000 mm anstatt 800 mm), eine andere Zahnstange (System Strub anstelle S.ystem
R.iggenbach) und Drehstrom anstelle von Wechselstrom, da dieser mehr Leistung und
höhere Sicherheit versprach.
Die Bauarbeiten gingen nur mühsam voran. Am 1.9. S.eptember 1.8.9.8 konnte der Betrieb
(u. a. mit einer B.ergpredigt des G.rindelwalder „G.letscherpfarrers“ G.ottfried S.trasser) auf der
im freien Gelände verlaufenden S.trecke von der S.tation Kleine S.cheidegg bis zur S.tation E.igergletscher am F.usse des E.iger eröffnet werden.
G.uyer - Z.eller sah vor, jedes Jahr eine weitere S.tation zu erreichen und diese so schnell
wie möglich in B.etrieb zu nehmen.

Nun begannen die S.prengarbeiten im T.unnel mit drei Schichten zu je acht Stunden, doch
kurz darauf am 2.6. F.ebruar 1.8.9.9 ereignete sich ein S.prengunglück, das sechs i.talienischen
A.rbeitern das L.eben kostete.
Am 7. M.ärz 1.8.9.9 erfolgte der D.urchstich der provisorischen S.tation R.otstock, welche ab
2. A.ugust nur kurzzeitig bedient wurde.
Die Stationsanlagen sind heute grösstenteils abgebaut, aber eine T.ür führt ins Freie.
Am 7. M.ärz 1.8.9.9 erreichte die Spitze der T.unnelbauer den vorgesehenen S.tandort der
S.tation E.igerwand. Am 3. A.pril des gleichen Jahres starb in Z.ürich A.dolf G.uyer - Z.eller,
die treibende Kraft der Jungfraubahn.
G.uyer - Z.ellers S.öhne führten den Bau fort, aber erst am 2.8. J.uni 1.9.0.3 konnte der Betrieb
bis zur S.tation E.igerwand, inmitten der E.igernordwand dem V.erkehr übergeben werden.
Ab dann konnten die Reisenden von der T.errasse aus den Ausblick hinunter Richtung
G.rindelwald geniessen. Zwei Jahre später, am 2.5. J.uli konnte die Strecke bis zur Halte-
stelle E.ismeer auf rund 3'160 m, auch K.allifirn genannt, mit einer wunderbaren Aussicht
über die G.letscher eröffnet werden, dem vorläufigen T.ouristenzentrum der Bahn.
Aufgrund knapp gewordener Finanzmittel sowie dem Tod von A.dolf G.uyer Z.eller wurden
die ursprünglichen Pläne abgeändert. Anstatt eines Halts unter dem M.önchsjoch und der
weiteren Strecke bis hinauf auf den G.ipfel der J.ungfrau wurde die Trasse so abgeändert,
dass das J.ungfraujoch die E.ndstation ist.
Am 1.5. N.ovember 1.9.0.8 ereignete sich im Sprengstofflager bei der S.tation E.igerwand eine
E.xplosion, bei welcher 150 Kisten mit 30'000 kg Dynamit in die Luft flogen. Glücklicherweise
forderte das U.nglück keine O.pfer.
Auch Spannungen blieben nicht aus: Die Arbeiter opponierten gegen das Unternehmen und
streikten.
Am 2.1. F.ebruar 1.9.1.2 erfolgte der D.urchschlag in der S.tation J.ungfraujoch, und am
1. A.ugust 1.9.1.2 wurde die S.tation mit 3'454 m als höchstgelegener B.ahnhof in E.uropa
eröffnet.
Die Baukosten betrugen statt der errechneten rund 10 Millionen 14,9 Millionen Franken.
Bemerkenswert ist, dass der im Jahr 1.9.1.2 eröffnete Abschnitt E.ismeer - J.ungfraujoch
sowohl im A.dhäsionsbetrieb als auch im letzten Abschnitt kurz vor dem J.ungfraujoch
mit Z.ahnradbetrieb befahren wurde.
Daher mussten spezielle R.eibungs- und Z.ahnradlokomotiven beschafft werden. Erst 1.9.5.1
stellte man die ganze S.trecke auf durchgehenden Z.ahnradbetrieb um, dies erleichterte die Betriebsführung ungemein.

Die Station Eismeer ist eine der zwei Aussichtspunkte / Haltesttellen im T.unnel der
J.ungfraubahn JB zwischen der S.tation E.igergletscher und dem J.ungfraujoch im
Berner Oberland im Kanton Bern in der Schweiz.

Eismeer - Der Name dieser Station könnte nicht treffender sein

In haushohen Abbrüchen fliesst ein breiter E.isstrom des oberen Ischmeer / Eismeer
dem unteren G.rindelwaldgletscher zu. Umrahmt wird das Eismeer von den Alpengipfeln
W.etterhorn (BE - 3`701m) - S.chreckhorn (BE - 4`078m) - L.auteraarhorn (BE - 4`042m)
und dem grossen F.iescherhorn (BE/VS - 4`049m) und dem M.ittellegigrat gegen den
E.iger (BE - 3`970m)
.

Mitten in dieser Gletscherwelt konnte am 25. Juli 1905 die Aussichtsstation in 3`159m
Höhe in der S.üdwand des E.iger eröffnet werden. Die Station Eismeer blieb während
sieben Jahren E.ndstation der J.ungfraubahn, bevor 1912 das J.ungfraujoch erreicht
werden konnte.
Früher konnte von hier mit den Skiern nach G.rindelwald gefahren werden. Leider haben
sich die E.ismassen des unteren G.rindelwaldgletschers in den letzten Jahren dermassen
zurückgebildet dass diese Tour nur noch sehr schwer zu bewältigen ist.

Für mich persöhnlich ist die Station Eismeer der schönste Aussichtspunkt beim Besuch
des Jungfraujoch. Normalerweise hält der letzte Zug auf`s J.ungfraujoch des Tages bei
dieser Station nicht mehr an.

The Eisemeer Station is one of the two view points in the c.hunnel between E.igergletscher
and the Station J.ungfraujoch / Top of Europe in the Switzerland.

Eismeer => Arctic Ocean - The name of this station could not be more accurate.

In crashes houses a broad flowing ice the lower G.rindelwald g.lacier. Surrounded,
the Arctic Ocean by the Alpine peaks W.etterhorn (BE - 3 `701m) - S.chreckhorn
(BE - 4` 078m) - L.auteraarhorn (BE - 4 `042m) and the big F.iescherhorn
(BE / VS - 4` 049m), and against the M.ittellegi - ridge to the E.iger (BE - 3 `970m)
Right in the middle of this glacier world was on 25 July 1905 the lookout station at 3 `159m
altitude opened. The station remained Arctic Ocean during seven years terminus of the
J.ungfrau - R.ailway before in 1912 J.ungfraujoch was achieved.
Previously could from here with the skis to G.rindelwald driven. Unfortunately, the ice
masses of the lower G.rindelwald g.lacier in the last few years went back that this tour
just very difficult to cope.

For me, the station is the most beautiful view while visiting the J.ungfraujoch.

Lest We Forget // Melbourne, Australia #igersMelbourne #igers_vic At the going down of the sun, and in the morning... we will remember them. They fought for our freedom, and what a fabulous free day I had... Last night at the going down of the sun I found myself spontaneously meeting up with two friends at the beach. Upon arrival we decided fish and chips were in order, followed by philosophical life chats by the pier until after dark, then hot chocolates at The Cove. Earlier in the day I had been scouting the city for a car park and open coffee shops so as to meet up with my oldest brother for brunch and a catch up. After midday I wandered through the city, in awe at the sight of and idea that service personnel were walking with the rest of the crowd - thinking of references to two texts I had read the day before. I wiggled my way all throughout a very busy CBD, then to Fed Square, against the flow on St Kilda Road and up to the Shrine of Remembrance, listening to the national anthem and watching as the ceremony came to a close. I sat there for a fair while just taking it all in. The trams were playing up so I got to walking once more, re-energising on a double shot short mac for the drive, which ended up taking me to St Kilda and all the way along the beach to Carrum - stunning as the last of the sunlight shone bright. After good totally unexpected times there I caught up with yet another friend for another hot chocolate and even more chats. ** I have so much appreciation for all the super kind and wonderful people I know down here. To have had freedom enough to meet you all, and freedom for all the years of fun since(and to come), for that I am truly grateful. ** Such a fab and full weekend has been had - but now that it's morning it is time to head North. ** Until next time Melbourne...
