Skogafoss In The Mist (2016-06-22 12:43)
Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with a width of 25 meters (82 feet) and a drop of 60 m (200 ft). Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days. This was not one of those sunny days. The mist, however, lends a beautiful mystery to the image, especially in this 2 second long exposure.
According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. The story also says that the chest was found years later, but they could not grasp the chest, only getting the ring from the side of the chest. This ring was given to a local church, which in turn gave it to a museum. However, I did find the treasure, and I should be handing in my resignation to work shortly. Almost Heaven, West Virginia. This is a 2.5 second exposure of Brush Creek Falls. Despite the constant rain, the water for most waterfalls we visited was a trickle. Brush Creek Falls was the exception. This is the largest waterfall in the southern part of the state, and once had a water-powered mill, which was built by Jimmy D. Johnson around 1880. The falls drops over a sandstone ledge that is about 25 feet/7.5 meters in height near the mouth of the stream's deep gorge of Brush Creek at Bluestone River.

Abandoned movie lot, Mojave Desert. Everything here was very consistently Roman or Greek looking, and the old set location was littered with columns, some standing, some fallen, as well as busts, statues, reliefs, and stands as well as plaster molds. I illuminated the columns while the camera shutter was open with a hand-held Protomachines LED2 flashlight. Thank you to David Dasinger for taking me here. Nikon D610/14-24mm f/2.8. 233s exposure. The white streaks in the sky are stars, as the long exposure of the photo shows the movement of the stars due to the earth's rotation over a long period of time.

The Joshua Twins Star Trails (5477)
This is a star trails photo, showing the movement of the stars as created by the rotation of the earth over 30 minutes. I love how a single image can show movement over such a long time! This is a real photo taken at night during a full moon. I set my tripod-mounted camera to a long exposure, keeping the shutter open for a long time, which makes the camera much more sensitive to light than our eyes on this already bright evening. I illuminated the foreground with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight to bring out more depth. I used a Pinout remote controller/app to set and trigger the camera.
I took this photo in Joshua Tree National Park, CA, hanging out with Dave Dasinger while doing so. JTNP is my spiritual home for night photography, and it felt utterly fantastic to return here to photograph here at night and hike during the day.

Trip The Rhyolite Fantastic (5684)
Rhyolite under the starry Milky Way. Rhyolite is one of the best known ghost towns in the West, founded in 1904, and at one point having a population of 10,000. This evening, I was excitedly testing a new lens, an Irix 15mm f/2.4, which seems quite good so far. I illuminated the former Cook Bank building with a hand-held LED flashlight during the 15 second exposure

SOME WORDS FOR PRINCE:
Photography. Music. Recording engineering. Gardening. Poetry. Writing. Drawing. Painting. Coding.
It's all art to me. They're all manifestations of inspiration, of expression, and they are at their greatest when they are at their purest.
I am writing this shortly after finding out that Prince passed away. He inspired me to stick to my vision, no matter what people initially thought, both in music and with photography.
There are very few musicians or artists that I would apply the word "genius" to. Prince is one of them. Incredibly gifted, talented, creative, innovative, he created music that was all his own, instantly recognizable. When he began his career, he blew away music executives by his beautifully crafted songs and sound, playing all the instruments, writing the songs, and doing all the vocals and background vocals. He is a towering figure in pop, funk, R&B, rock, outsider music...and artists who have the spine to stick to their vision no matter what.
I am very lucky to have seen him perform.
This has been a horrible year for many well-known musicians. It's only April, and it seems so many legends have passed away already this year. Hopefully somewhere, there is a big ol' greasy, funky jam underway, with Prince, Bowie, Frey, Haggard, Kantner, and White gettin' loose, and Abe Vigoda introducing the band.
R.I.P. Prince Nelson. Most anyone who has played pop, rock, funk - or anyone who has ever stuck to their artistic vision despite great obstacles or criticism - owes you a giant hug and a thank you. Max respect.

Cowboy up! Pioneertown, California began as a Wild West motion picture set in the 1940s, with Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and others among the original developers and investors. The set was designed for the actors to live while using their homes in the movie. The Cisco Kid and many other Westerns were filmed here. Saloons, jails, banks, all the good stuff you need for a Western town. I illuminated the scene while the camera shutter was open with a hand-held Protomachines LED2 flashlight. The circular star trails were created by the very long total exposure, created by the rotation of the earth. Nikon D610/14-24mm f/2.8. 2016-07-19 02:47. Each individual photo was 30s f/8 ISO 1000 and were stacked to reduce noise and create the 29 minute overall exposure.

Dinosaurs Need Chiropractors Too (4118):
These concrete dinosaurs were the beginning of a miniature golf course in the Mojave Desert. Begun in the early '70s by Lonnie Coffman with the help of Air Force serviceman Gregory Wicker, the project was abandoned. But the concrete dinosaurs remain. My friend Dave Dasinger and I came here on a warm summer night.
I illuminated the dinosaurs with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED flashlight, working slightly quicker than usual to keep the sky dark to create extra contrast between that and the dinos. This is a real photo taken at night. This evening, everything was illuminated by a big bright moon, an almost full moon, almost bright enough to read a book. And setting my tripod-mounted camera to a long exposure made the camera much more sensitive to light than our eyes on this already bright evening. This is why this photo seems brighter than what we might see at night. It is not due to post-processing. The moon, which reflects light from the sun, also makes the sky bluer, and when the photo is a long exposure photo, the sky will appear brighter, making the blue more apparent. I illuminated the building with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight while the camera shutter was open. This is not a post-processing creation. No pixels were harmed during the creation of this photo. :D
I am fascinated with how a single long exposure photo can show movements and the cumulative effects of light in a single image, and fascinated with the stories and history that these locations hold. Thank you for reading this and looking at the image. -Ken
