The game was released in 1994, but I probably played it a year or so later. I'd played Descent, and liked it, but Heretic was literally more grounded. I'd not played Doom by this point.
This was in the days before anti-aliasing, so as you approached walls, the pixels of the textures enlarged until they filled the screen. I found this fake stone wall tile creation in a kitchen and bathroom shop in Sciennes, Edinburgh.
For all their attempts at realism, computer games are always a radical simplification of reality. It's our generosity in interpreting them which does most of the work.
