Smile on Saturday -- Ice cream
When I was a kid, an ice cream and Orange Crush float was one of my favourite ways to consume ice cream. So when the theme was announced, a float was my first thought. It turned out to be a bit more challenging than I thought it would be.
I set up my shot, lighting, tripod etc minus the ice cream, using just a glass with Orange Crush in it. So far so good. I had the glass only about 2/3 full to allow room for the ice cream as I planned to make the float without moving the glass. Though I'd left room, I had not figured in how much the carbonated beverage would foam up when the ice cream was added. It flowed down the outside of the glass and submerged the ice cream. So I had to eat that one and go back to the drawing board.
The lengths I go to for my art! Tonight I am going to try my third float of the day. It will be an adult float as it will feature a splash of blood-orange gin in it. :-)
Disclaimer: No butterflies were harmed in the making of this float.
National Black Cow Day Is June 10
Farmer Green had to bring Bessy, his prized dairy cow, to the soda shop to show her just how a black cow is made. Poor Bessyโฆ She thought some poor cow would have to sacrifice her life to make a drink. Instead, she learns just how a black cow is made. She will allow Farmer Green and his grandson who came along to have some today. How about you?
Today we celebrate the black cow, which in many locations is simply another name for a root beer floatโa drink consisting of root beer and vanilla ice cream. They are sometimes called chocolate cows or brown cows when chocolate ice cream is used in place of vanilla. In some locations, a black or brown cow is made with cola instead of root beer. In other locations, root beer and ice cream are mixed together, instead of the ice cream sitting on top.
Frank J. Wisner, owner Cripple Creek Brewing in Colorado, made the first black cow on August 19, 1893, after observing the snow caps of Cow Mountain the night before, and thinking they looked like ice cream scoops on top of soda. The first drinks were made by combining Myers Avenue Red root beer and vanilla ice cream. He soon began making the drink using cola, and it became known as the Black Cow Mountain drink. It is said that children shortened the name to the black cow.
How to Observe
Celebrate the day by having a black cow! Pour root beerโsuch as Myers Avenue Red, the first root beer used to make black cowsโor cola into a glass, add ice cream, and then top it off with more soda. You could also buy one at a restaurant, such as at A&W, where they are particularly popular in the United States and Canada.
Here is an interesting Wiki article about the origins of the ice cream soda/root beer float, first made in Philadelphia...a delicious reason I'm proud to be an American ;-)

#23 Foamy on the 52 in 2024 Photo Challenge
We moved to Tennessee almost two years ago. Sadly, we don't get to go to the Iowa State Fair, anymore. We went every year for twenty five years, living in Iowa. A couple of years, I went every day for the eleven day fair!
One of our favorite things to do is eat our way through the fair. So we have created a challenge to either buy locally, get from our local county fair coming up, or make our own recipe at home. So here we go, We have four weeks to get this done. That is our challenge!
And the food list looks like this:
Corn dog
Pork chop on a stick
Chicken kabobs on a stick
Caramel apple
Gyro - done
Street corn
Potato Curls
Cotton candy
Beef Sundae
Chocolate chip cookies in a bucket
Coke Float - done
PBJ Waffle
Cinnamon crunch apple taco
Crab rangoons - done
Local craft wine or beer

You read that title right. I mixed grape soda with cheese ice cream to make my first ice cream float, then just coke with the ice cream after, then both Coke AND grape soda after.
I finished one whole can of Coke (330 ml/ 11.16 oz), one bottle of grape soda (12 oz/ 355 ml), and 4 scoops of cheese ice cream.

This is quite possibly my favorite food on the face of the planet. Pineapple juice with soft-serve (non-dairy) pineapple ice cream.
Tried making an ice cream float from the recipe collection. Not so easy to make for photos. The whipped cream kept falling every time I'd place the cherry on top. Not quite the way I envisioned. I may have to work on this a little more.

A classic ice cream float using orange soda instead of root beer. It tasted just like a dreamcicle ice cream pop.
Vanilla ice cream in homemade stout beer, garnished w/cherries and/or chocolate chips. (Also very good when made with Young's Double Chocolate Stout.)
