A view of the former Illinois Central Passenger Station in Champaign. The Beaux-Arts style station was completed in 1924, and remained in use until 1999, when the new Illinois Terminal intermodal passenger station opened.
The former ICCR Passenger Station is a contributing property in the Champaign Downtown Commercial District listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. Today the building is known as "The Station," and has been repurposed as a shopping and dining mall.
Located in Champaign County in east central Illinois, the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana are the home of the University of Illinois. The population of the City of Champaign at the 2020 census was 88,302, while Champaign County had a population of 205,865.
The Champaign Downtown Historic District has two historic Illinois Central Railroad (ICRR) passenger depots. My previous post showed the Illinois Central Passenger Station in that was active as a passenger train station from its completion in 1924 until 1999 when the current Illinois Terminal Intermodal Passenger Station opened. The photo in this post shows the Old Depot constructed for the Illinois Central Railroad in 1898-99, and which served as the ICRR passenger depot until the opening of the successor station in 1924.
Just like the 1924 Beaux-Arts station has been repurposed as a shopping and dining mall, the 1899 depot shown here is now privately owned and, since 2015, has been the home of the Black Dog Smoke & Ale House. The Old Depot is a contributing property in the Champaign Downtown Commercial District listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020.

Hard to believe in 2008, this is what the Iowa Interstate looked like. 4-SD 38's were in charge of this 113 car Iowa City to Cedar Rapids turn. The train is just topping one of the two major hills on the Crandic's Amana line as they head north towards Cedar Rapids. Most of these cars are for ADM in Cedar Rapids. The job still passes thru here everyday, but GEVO's normally are on the menu for power. Too bad the SD38's aren't coming out of storage more.
Trying to back-fill some of my early stuff to Flickr.....
Back in 2008 the Iowa Interstate was somewhat interesting without any GEVO's on the property. Here 4 SD 38's are in charge of this 113 car Iowa City to Cedar Rapids turn. When the IAIS took over the Crandic transfer operation between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, the IAIS picked up 4 LLPX SD38-2s to handled the tonnage.
LLPX 2809 leads the 4-pack west over the Iowa River at Iowa City, IA with the ICCR-17.
All 4 of these now wear IAIS paint in the 150 series. An additional 4 LLPX SD38-2s would join these down the road bringing the roster total to 8.

Not the best composition of the meet, but here is ICCR passing CBBI at the east end of the connection.

LLPX 2802 and LLPX 2809 were the first two SD38-2s to show up in the first batch of four (2805 and 2807 came shortly). Here they are paired with LLPX 2039 and IAIS 405 on the ICCR-19 at the Benton-Iowa bridge south of Walford, IA on the Crandic (ex-MILW) trackage.

Scanned from a Fuji Sensia slide.
A telephoto shot of ICCR next to the depot in Iowa City. I was off from work at the time to rehab a broken ankle so I got quite a few shots of the early ICCR trains.

Since Will brought it up, here's a pair of Crandic SW14's in charge of a ballast train passing the MILW depot at Amana, IA on their way to dump rock near the Maytag/Amana warehouse.
Tim and I had a busy day west of Iowa City: CBBI from Marengo to Homestead, this ballast train from Walford to Amana, CRPE at Yocum, the ballast train returning to Cedar Rapids, and finally ICCR from Coralville to Walford.
