This 67,200 square foot building provides 8 floors of flexible office space, a penthouse for mechanical equipment, and a basement with service facilities for the main tenant. The site is an interior city lot, located on Capitol Mall, an important boulevard (one of the first areas to be redeveloped in the downtown area). The neighboring buildings are and have always been financial and government buildings.

The first, second and third floors were designed to be leased to and occupied by the major tenant (IBM). The other 5 floors divided into smaller office suites. The building was later acquired by IBM, who redesigned the interiors for their occupancy of the entire building. The original client was Dr, Charles E. Brown and the construction cost was $3 million including the 4-level parking structure which accommodates 207 cars. Continental Construction was the construction manager.

The IBM System 360 is an IBM mainframe computer, released in 1964. It was the first computer to separate architecture from implementation: the 360 had different models with different prices. Slightly modified radiation hardened versions (System/4 Pi) of this machine are used to control the Space Shuttle.

The south facade of the former IBM building, on the corner of Temple Way and Avon Street.

I couldn't find any photo that would sufficiently illustrate diversity. However, it is best illustrated by photos.

So let me contribute the whole set as it was one...

In the early 90s I was told that mainframes are gone, dinosaurs. LANs are the deal. Duh?

That was a gift as they hauled out the old one and installed the new mainframe. And all these years later... Well we do have a retake on VM (CP-67, etc.) on Intel platforms. Go figure.
