The one piece that needs explaining is The-Flame - it's the silent PC I built originally to be a hackintosh, and then just ended up doing lab duty. I documented the gear here:

www.brentozar.com/archive/2009/05/how-to-build-a-silent-pc/

These days, I just use it as a general purpose lab box, throwing different pieces of software on there to evaluate and then wiping it clean. At the moment, I'm running StarWind's iSCSI target software on it, which lets me use it as a storage server.

Integral to the StorCenter px12-450r is the new low-power Intel Xeon Processor E3-1265L v2, coupled with 8GB memory. The multicore processor excels at multi-threaded storage workloads like multi-LUN iSCSI and multi-client virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). The 8GB memory assists those workloads and easily supports memory-intensive tasks like the Avamar source-based deduplicating agent, included with all Iomega StorCenter PX series storage products.

The new StorCenter px12-450r is a ground-up redesign of Iomega's previous top-of-the-line model, the StorCenter px12-350r. The StorCenter px12-450r is available in diskless and partially populated configurations (diskless version available in international markets only), enabling users to start small in terms of storage capacity, or provide their own HDDs and grow as workloads and storage capacity dictate. The px12-450r is qualified with a broad range of 1TB, 2TB and 3TB consumer hard drives and Server Class Series HDDs, as well as 4TB HDDs, which are newly available with the px12-450r. All product configurations and expansion drives for the px12-450r available from Iomega include Server Class Series SATA drives for the highest reliability.

The new px12-450r also supports solid state drives (SSDs), ideal for large amounts of small block random I/O workloads such as virtualization and database. The px12-450r expands on the px12-350r's user serviceability with a new mechanical design that includes a replaceable processor by removing just two thumbscrews. To expand the storage capacity, all product configurations include disk drive trays so users can add HDDs.

One of the key advantages of adopting leading edge technology like the new Intel Xeon Processor is that the StorCenter px12-450r can handle advanced workloads to increase the lifespan of the network storage array for end users. The multicore processor and 8GB memory are ready for the next generation of storage-based applications. The px12-450r includes 2 PCIe slots to further expand the px12-450r's capabilities, particularly by adding I/O connectivity, such as 10GbE when it becomes widely available.

I love this stuff. I just need dropbox support and i'll be a happy geek! I have been testing iSCSI to my Mac and Windows laptops using the Globalsan and Microsoft Initiators. Time Machine seems to work OK so far, but needs far more testing.

Introducing the Iomega® StorCenterTM ix12-300r, the network storage array purpose-built for small- to medium-sized businesses and the distributed enterprise. Built on world-class EMC® enterprise storage functionality, the StorCenter ix12-300r offers versatile storage provisioning, advanced protocol capabilities, expandability, and affordability.

Upgraded to use 2TB SATA drives. 12x15 2TB drives or 360TB of storage. This is a RAID-0 type arrangement, so about 180TB data storage all going out at 8Gb FC speed, or multiple iSCSI at 10GbE, etc. The amazing thing about XIV is that everything is stored in small chunks and rebuild speed from replaced drives or nodes is FAST, FAST, FAST.

E_BLOCKMODEL_NO_RANKED_RESOURCES_FOUND Provisioning database and SQL server. This database table contains the min and max values for the storage data allocated for the organization. The numbers here are wrong. The free HMC 4.5 provisioning tool seems to have a problem with matching, converting MB to GB, and bytes, or there's a conversion that's flawed in the scripts that enter the numbers into the sql database. The amount shown for available or free space (the actual_free) is wrong.

In this scenario (real life scenario) the free space was 89 MB. No more mailboxes could be created because there needs to be 100MB shown free to create a mailbox. The number for this customer should have been about 6 GB free since only 44 mail boxes were created and they have a max (actual_max column) 10GB. 44 x 100,000 = 4.4GB. So 89MB free is just wrong.

Server storage is a very important aspect of a servers performance. Drives can be both internal or external using a network storage appliance and iSCSI technology to facilitate the LUN connections to a an external network attached storage appliance to appear as if the drives are internal but without the added expense of fiber channel.
