Sadly the glaciers up in the mountains are much less than 15 years ago when we previously visited, but technology has moved on and it nice to do big sweep and get an instant photo to either keep or delete. These are three mountains that look over Grindelwald First and the town of Gindelwald which is at the bottom of the cablecar route seen here on the righthand side.

Dulles Series No. 1 of 6: When I was a kid in 1962, Chantilly, Va., was all pastures and cornfields when Dulles International Airport opened in the middle of it all. It was an architectural and technological marvel and I get the same chill going into the original soaring terminal now that I got as a kid attending the first open house. This is the original Eero Saarinen-designed terminal as seen at dusk from the Turkish Airlines executive lounge in one of the newer arrival-departure concourses. ©2025 John M. Hudson | jmhudson1.com
Honestly I am standing upright, but this clever design of roof gives shelter to the main doors to the Helsinki Central Library. It probably helps in winter time when snow falls but may not reach the doors and get blown into the foyer.
Finnair flight from Helsinki to Rovaniemi - sunset just disappearing over the frozen lakes and forests of Finland as we pass the town of Rovaniemi. The airport just visible on the righthand side I believe.
Winglet of Airbus A321 visible with the navigation light lit , we landed in a few minutes at the small but busy airport north of the town.
This was arrival for the first part of our trip with three nights to try and capture some images and hopefully the aurora borealis.
Sadly as we came to realise that you have no control over the climatic conditions - snow fall and ice plus 100% cloud cover each night put paid to seeing the sky lit up once again. The Northern Lights were only a kp of one was another issue !!
I had trip with guarantee to see the northern lights, the only issue is we might spend 10 hours travelling to Sweden or Norway in a small coach in the night to get a glimpse.
My apps were not promising much for a spectacle which was quite disappointing, but that is nature.
It was not to be and the mini-bus trip was cancelled with a full refund.
So a case of forget any images, just enjoy what you can. I feel climate change has also had an impact on the grotty weather we seem to get recently.
It had been a tiring day with early start to Heathrow , then nearly three hours to Helsinki, a four hour stopover to get this flight. The day was dark at start and finish but a new adventure was going to be experienced by my wife and I having never been to Finland before.
Image taken with iPhone 15 Pro Max into the night sky.
Even though the 'big' camera is out taking pics, you have got to take the occasional iphone image too.

The garden has now filled in with flowers and is looking quite splendid. The daffodils and tulip blooms are finished and have been deadheaded and the lupines, wall flowers and bluebells are now in full bloom and are dominating the garden, with other species about to bloom including French lavender and Icelandic poppies. Increasing numbers of bees are present, but so far the only butterflies are the occasional white cabbage butterflies.

While enjoying lunch at an outdoor cafe in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn, we were unexpectedly serenaded by the Hare Krishna. A rather limited repertoire I must say.
Away for a mini break in Ledbury and Tewkesbury, and amazing weather change to some rare sunshine and blue sky. How uplifting after weeks it seemed of dreary weather.
Just took iPhone with me, no big camera allowed !!
The church is St Michael and All Angels, Ledbury.
A familiar sight of planes heading for the runway, this was an Aer Lingus departing as our aircraft cut across as been delayed due to loading problems. We took off on the southern runway about 9am heading to Zurich - flight time 1 hour 10 mins.
And you think it is cold in the UK? This is Helsinki harbour and the cold over night has frozen blocks of ice, but the ships have ice breaking abilities to keep a route clear which you can see curving away in the distance.
To add to the winter feel a cold icy wind was blowing from the east and Russia is not that far from here. The sea mist was following in.
It felt we were staying rather too close to the claws of Russia and had booked fully flexible tickets for flights and hotels as could not predict anything kicking off and we wanted the ability to cancel the trip if the Russian/ Ukraine events took a downturn.
