I was checking out the updates on my iPhone 5s last night when I came across the highlighted passage and was struck by the wording. What on earth is "deference" in design?
Turns out that this terminology comes not from Kindle or Amazon but from the "design themes" for Apple's iOS 7. (I must have missed the announcement.) The app description is just saying they're compliant with the themes:
Deference. The UI helps users understand and interact with the content, but never competes with it.
Clarity. Text is legible at every size, icons are precise and lucid, adornments are subtle and appropriate, and a sharpened focus on functionality motivates the design.
Depth. Visual layers and realistic motion impart vitality and heighten users’ delight and understanding.
The first two seem like laudable goals. Not everyone likes the new "flat" iOS 7 interface design, but I'm happy with it. The design does seem less intrusive, and I'm enjoying using the phone. However, I've turned off the motion feature. While I don't really dislike it, I'm not wild about it either, and the processing/battery overhead it consumes doesn't seem worth it, so I just turned it off in Settings.

261.365 - September 18, 2013 - Well, I'm uploading my picture for today WAY earlier than I usually do. For one, I've already got my picture taken for the day. Usually I wait to the end of the day to see what I have but I know the rest of my evening will be taken up by other things so I'm going with what I have already. Plus, today has been characterized in large part by my "adventure" in updating my iPhone to iOS 7. I began updating it just after lunch while I was working, figuring it would take care of itself in the background, which it did. However, once the update was finished and I was going the the setup steps it would not activate with Apple's servers! I got the message you see in today's photo over and over and over for almost four hours! I'm guessing their activation servers crashed with all the updating happening today. Strange that I was able to download the 750 MB+ file in about 20 minutes but a simple activation would not go through! Finally at about 5:30 the activation worked!
The second reason I'm uploading now rather than later tonight (when I would normally edit/upload the day's photo) is that I plan on being busy playing a new video game my son got me yesterday as a late birthday present!
