Mandi Shivaratri Fair (Hindi:मण्डी शिवरात्री मेला) is an annual fair that is held for 7 days starting with the Hindu festival of Shivaratri, in the Mandi town (31.72°N 76.92°E) of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The Mandi Shivaratri fair is held as per Hindu calendar every year on the Krishna paksha 13th day/13th night (breaking fast/'vrata' on 14th after sunrise) of the waning moon in the month of Phalguna that corresponds to February/March as per Gregorian calendar.[1] The festival’s popularity is widespread and hence is known as an international festival. In view of the large number of gods and goddesses that are invited to the festival from its 81 temples, Mandi town has the title of 'Varanasi of the Hills'.[2][3] During 2016, the festival will be celebrated from 7th March (Shivaratri day) for seven days till 14 March 2016.[4][5]
The Mandi festival or fair is particularly famous as the special fair transforms Mandi town into a venue of grand celebration when all gods and goddesses, said to be more than 200 deities of the Mandi districtassemble here, starting with the day of Shivaratri. Mandi town located on the banks of the Beas River, popularly known as the "cathedral of temples", is one of the oldest towns of Himachal Pradesh with about 81 temples of different gods and goddesses in its periphery. There are several legends linked to the celebration of this event. The festival is centred on the protector deity of Mandi "Mado Rai" (Lord Vishnu) and Lord Shiva of the Bhootnath temple in Mandi.[1][3][6]

Mandi town, where the festival is held, was ruled by Raja Ajbar Sen who was considered the first great ruler of Mandi State in the sixteenth century, since he not only combined the hereditary regions but also added to it by conquering new areas. Apart from his palace, he built the temple of Bhootnath (temple for Shiva) at the centre of the Mandi town, which is one of the two focal temples of the festival.[1][7] In the theocratic state that evolved during this period, worship of Shiva and related goddesses was dominant. However, the theocratic nature of the state received special emphasis when, during Raja Suraj Sen’s reign, Vishnu worship also became integral to the State. Raja Suraj Sen (1664 to 1679), who did not have an heir, built the temple known as “Madhav Rai temple”, dedicated to a form of Lord Vishnu, as protector of Mandi. An elegant silver image of Radha and Krishna was made by his goldsmith Bhima, in the year 1705, which was named "Madho Rai" and deified, and ordained as the King of the State of Mandi thereafter. Since then the rulers served the state as servants of Madho Rai and custodians of the State. Suraj Sen’s successors have also held the deity of the temple in great reverence. This god is represented with precedence over all other gods on various religious occasions. The theocratic nature of the people of the state is amply reflected during the popular "Mandi Shivratri Fair", which is held every year with great fanfare.[1][5][7]
However, the specific observance of this festival as a fair, starting with Shivaratri, is linked to its ruler Ishwari Sen. Ishawri Sen was held a prisoner for 12 years after he lost his kingdom in the war waged by Sansar Chand of Punjab, in 1792. He was released by the Gurkha invaders who had invaded the Kangra and Mandi states. Afterwards, the Gurkhas' restored the Mandi state to Ishwari Sen. He was given a reception on the occasion of his return to Mandi, his state capital. On this occasion, the King invited all hill deities of the Kingdom and held a grand celebration, and this day happened to be the Shivratri festival day. Since then the practice of holding the Mandi fair during Shivaratri has been observed every year at Mandi. In recent years, modernity has also set in with Bollywood artists performing at the fair at Paddal in the celebrations in the evenings.[7][8]
ObservanceEdit
The observance of the fair is marked on the Shivaratri day when the village gods are carried in palanquins or rathas (chariots by people) to Mandi to pay homage to Madho Rai and the Raja. Members of caste denominations such as Brahmin and Kshatriya carry their gods and goddesses by palanquins or on their back. However, some exceptions of carrying them in vehicles by some caste groups have been noted. Thereafter, the fair lasts for seven days.
It is an accepted practice that every deity that is brought to the festival (decorated with glittering embroidered drapery) visits Madho Rai temple first to pay obeisance to Lord Vishnu and then proceed to the palace in a colourful procession called the Shoba Yatra, known locally as 'Zareb,' to honour the ruler (the regent of the Lord Mado Rai). (It is said that Madho Rai comes out of his temple only once a year on the Shivaratri day and leads the procession.[7]). The ruler thereafter pay obeisance to Lord Shiva at the Bhootnath temple where the main festival of Shivaratri is held. The palanquins of the deities are swayed to the drum beats and folk music to indicate their happiness after visiting the temples of Vishnu and Shiva.
There is pecking order that is maintained in the sequence of worship by the deities invited to the fair, based on rank and status. The day after the Shivaratri, on the second day of the fair, a pageant of gods with folk bands, dancers and devotees (all dressed in their colourful attire) and with lot of fanfare, is held in Paddal, a large open ground at the confluence of the Beas and Suketi rivers. Some 200 deities arrive from shrines around Mandi town and are assigned places at the Paddal grounds as per the pecking order, where the devotees offer worship to all the deities. The pageant is held every day of the festival.
The fair is also an occasion when local traders and people carry out brisk trade in local products such as wool, opium, honey, walnut, ghee (butter oil), and general merchandise from the region of Kangra, Kullu, Shimla, Bilaspur and from the neighbouring state of Punjab. It is said that the festivities promote handcrafted jewellery of the region. However, during the entire Mandi Shivaratri Fair, religiosity is the main theme. It is said that religious synthesis was achieved by combining the worship of Vishnu and Shiva cults during the seven-day fair.[2][5][8][9][10][11][12]
One day before the concluding day of the festival at the end of fanfare, music and dance, in the evening, Jagaran ("night vigil," a nightlong worship) is held. On this occasion, a guru and his disciple proclaim prophesies for the following year. On the last day of the festivities, prayers are chanted and, after paying obeisance to Lord Shiva, all the deities assembled in Mandi depart to their original abodes. On this occasion, chadars (a form of devotional drapery offering to the god) are offered. It is an occasion when the head of the state (now a governor) is normally present on the last day, joins the worship, and accompanies the pageant.[13] During all these festivities, it is said that Rishi Kamru Nag (local god of rains), the presiding deity of the Maha Shivaratri, after paying his obeisance to Madho Rai, moves to the Tarna ma temple at the top of the Tarna hill from where he watches the proceedings of the fair for seven days.[5] People from all walks of life and belonging to all strata of the society from adjoining areas come to visit this fair and to [1] seek the blessings of Lord Shiva on this auspicious day.
Bhootnath Temple
Bhootnath Temple, with an idol of a manifestation of god Shiva, an ancient temple dated to the 1520s, is synonymous with Mandi. It is in the heart of the town. The Nandi, Shiva's mount, faces the deity from the ornamented double-arched entrance. The festival of Shivaratri is the prime event at this temple; the temple is the focal point of the seven day festival.[11]
A legend is told of the building of Bhoothnath Temple. It is said that, in 1526, Raja Ajber Sen heard the story of a cow offering milk on her own volition to a particular stone in a forest in Mandi. Lord Shiva is said to have appeared in the Raja’s dream and directed him to extricate the Shiva Linga that was buried at that site. Thereafter, the Raja found the Shiva Linga at the indicated location, which he deified in a temple that he erected in 1526, at the place it was found. He called it the "Bhootnath Temple" and started the observance of the Shivaratri festival at Mandi. Concurrent with this event, the Raja shifted his capital from Bhiuli to Mandi.[5]

Mandi town is accessible by road from Shimla, Chandigarh, Pathankot and Delhi. The nearest railway stations are Joginder Nagar and Shimla by narrow gauge train. It is connected to Chandigarh and Kalka by broad gauge line of the Indian Railways.[6] Kullu-Manali airport Bhuntar is the nearest airport, it is about 45 km from Mandi town.

Mandi Shivaratri Fair (Hindi:मण्डी शिवरात्री मेला) is an annual fair that is held for 7 days starting with the Hindu festival of Shivaratri, in the Mandi town (31.72°N 76.92°E) of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The Mandi Shivaratri fair is held as per Hindu calendar every year on the Krishna paksha 13th day/13th night (breaking fast/'vrata' on 14th after sunrise) of the waning moon in the month of Phalguna that corresponds to February/March as per Gregorian calendar.[1] The festival’s popularity is widespread and hence is known as an international festival. In view of the large number of gods and goddesses that are invited to the festival from its 81 temples, Mandi town has the title of 'Varanasi of the Hills'.[2][3] During 2016, the festival will be celebrated from 7th March (Shivaratri day) for seven days till 14 March 2016.[4][5]
The Mandi festival or fair is particularly famous as the special fair transforms Mandi town into a venue of grand celebration when all gods and goddesses, said to be more than 200 deities of the Mandi districtassemble here, starting with the day of Shivaratri. Mandi town located on the banks of the Beas River, popularly known as the "cathedral of temples", is one of the oldest towns of Himachal Pradesh with about 81 temples of different gods and goddesses in its periphery. There are several legends linked to the celebration of this event. The festival is centred on the protector deity of Mandi "Mado Rai" (Lord Vishnu) and Lord Shiva of the Bhootnath temple in Mandi.[1][3][6]

Mandi town, where the festival is held, was ruled by Raja Ajbar Sen who was considered the first great ruler of Mandi State in the sixteenth century, since he not only combined the hereditary regions but also added to it by conquering new areas. Apart from his palace, he built the temple of Bhootnath (temple for Shiva) at the centre of the Mandi town, which is one of the two focal temples of the festival.[1][7] In the theocratic state that evolved during this period, worship of Shiva and related goddesses was dominant. However, the theocratic nature of the state received special emphasis when, during Raja Suraj Sen’s reign, Vishnu worship also became integral to the State. Raja Suraj Sen (1664 to 1679), who did not have an heir, built the temple known as “Madhav Rai temple”, dedicated to a form of Lord Vishnu, as protector of Mandi. An elegant silver image of Radha and Krishna was made by his goldsmith Bhima, in the year 1705, which was named "Madho Rai" and deified, and ordained as the King of the State of Mandi thereafter. Since then the rulers served the state as servants of Madho Rai and custodians of the State. Suraj Sen’s successors have also held the deity of the temple in great reverence. This god is represented with precedence over all other gods on various religious occasions. The theocratic nature of the people of the state is amply reflected during the popular "Mandi Shivratri Fair", which is held every year with great fanfare.[1][5][7]
However, the specific observance of this festival as a fair, starting with Shivaratri, is linked to its ruler Ishwari Sen. Ishawri Sen was held a prisoner for 12 years after he lost his kingdom in the war waged by Sansar Chand of Punjab, in 1792. He was released by the Gurkha invaders who had invaded the Kangra and Mandi states. Afterwards, the Gurkhas' restored the Mandi state to Ishwari Sen. He was given a reception on the occasion of his return to Mandi, his state capital. On this occasion, the King invited all hill deities of the Kingdom and held a grand celebration, and this day happened to be the Shivratri festival day. Since then the practice of holding the Mandi fair during Shivaratri has been observed every year at Mandi. In recent years, modernity has also set in with Bollywood artists performing at the fair at Paddal in the celebrations in the evenings.[7][8]
ObservanceEdit
The observance of the fair is marked on the Shivaratri day when the village gods are carried in palanquins or rathas (chariots by people) to Mandi to pay homage to Madho Rai and the Raja. Members of caste denominations such as Brahmin and Kshatriya carry their gods and goddesses by palanquins or on their back. However, some exceptions of carrying them in vehicles by some caste groups have been noted. Thereafter, the fair lasts for seven days.
It is an accepted practice that every deity that is brought to the festival (decorated with glittering embroidered drapery) visits Madho Rai temple first to pay obeisance to Lord Vishnu and then proceed to the palace in a colourful procession called the Shoba Yatra, known locally as 'Zareb,' to honour the ruler (the regent of the Lord Mado Rai). (It is said that Madho Rai comes out of his temple only once a year on the Shivaratri day and leads the procession.[7]). The ruler thereafter pay obeisance to Lord Shiva at the Bhootnath temple where the main festival of Shivaratri is held. The palanquins of the deities are swayed to the drum beats and folk music to indicate their happiness after visiting the temples of Vishnu and Shiva.
There is pecking order that is maintained in the sequence of worship by the deities invited to the fair, based on rank and status. The day after the Shivaratri, on the second day of the fair, a pageant of gods with folk bands, dancers and devotees (all dressed in their colourful attire) and with lot of fanfare, is held in Paddal, a large open ground at the confluence of the Beas and Suketi rivers. Some 200 deities arrive from shrines around Mandi town and are assigned places at the Paddal grounds as per the pecking order, where the devotees offer worship to all the deities. The pageant is held every day of the festival.
The fair is also an occasion when local traders and people carry out brisk trade in local products such as wool, opium, honey, walnut, ghee (butter oil), and general merchandise from the region of Kangra, Kullu, Shimla, Bilaspur and from the neighbouring state of Punjab. It is said that the festivities promote handcrafted jewellery of the region. However, during the entire Mandi Shivaratri Fair, religiosity is the main theme. It is said that religious synthesis was achieved by combining the worship of Vishnu and Shiva cults during the seven-day fair.[2][5][8][9][10][11][12]
One day before the concluding day of the festival at the end of fanfare, music and dance, in the evening, Jagaran ("night vigil," a nightlong worship) is held. On this occasion, a guru and his disciple proclaim prophesies for the following year. On the last day of the festivities, prayers are chanted and, after paying obeisance to Lord Shiva, all the deities assembled in Mandi depart to their original abodes. On this occasion, chadars (a form of devotional drapery offering to the god) are offered. It is an occasion when the head of the state (now a governor) is normally present on the last day, joins the worship, and accompanies the pageant.[13] During all these festivities, it is said that Rishi Kamru Nag (local god of rains), the presiding deity of the Maha Shivaratri, after paying his obeisance to Madho Rai, moves to the Tarna ma temple at the top of the Tarna hill from where he watches the proceedings of the fair for seven days.[5] People from all walks of life and belonging to all strata of the society from adjoining areas come to visit this fair and to [1] seek the blessings of Lord Shiva on this auspicious day.
Bhootnath Temple
Bhootnath Temple, with an idol of a manifestation of god Shiva, an ancient temple dated to the 1520s, is synonymous with Mandi. It is in the heart of the town. The Nandi, Shiva's mount, faces the deity from the ornamented double-arched entrance. The festival of Shivaratri is the prime event at this temple; the temple is the focal point of the seven day festival.[11]
A legend is told of the building of Bhoothnath Temple. It is said that, in 1526, Raja Ajber Sen heard the story of a cow offering milk on her own volition to a particular stone in a forest in Mandi. Lord Shiva is said to have appeared in the Raja’s dream and directed him to extricate the Shiva Linga that was buried at that site. Thereafter, the Raja found the Shiva Linga at the indicated location, which he deified in a temple that he erected in 1526, at the place it was found. He called it the "Bhootnath Temple" and started the observance of the Shivaratri festival at Mandi. Concurrent with this event, the Raja shifted his capital from Bhiuli to Mandi.[5]

Mandi town is accessible by road from Shimla, Chandigarh, Pathankot and Delhi. The nearest railway stations are Joginder Nagar and Shimla by narrow gauge train. It is connected to Chandigarh and Kalka by broad gauge line of the Indian Railways.[6] Kullu-Manali airport Bhuntar is the nearest airport, it is about 45 km from Mandi town.

Decided to was time to cut the permanent tether to work and invested in a mobile so I could escape carrying around my work issue one all the time... Now anyone that knows me will know what an apple freak I am. And man did I do some research into which handset to get. I was all set for the obvious choice of a 64Gb iPhone 6S, but for some reason I just kept coming back to the Galaxy S7. Its the removable storage and the water proofing that swung it... Turns out aswell its got a majestic camera on it too. This was taken using the front facing one and using my palm to trigger the shutter. Up to now its all working out OK... I just miss iMessage.

Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 7 was launched in September 2016 and was soon met with record-breaking sales, but does that mean the world’s most popular smartphone lives up to the hype? With some major and minor improvements and features, including water resistance and up to 256GB storage capacity, Apple’s flagship device has users wondering how it stacks up to not only other smartphones on the market but also its predecessor, the iPhone 6s. With the removal of the headphone jack and a higher price tag, the iPhone 7 seemingly has both Apple fans and tech experts alike divided.

Design
Much like the iPhone 6 and 6s before it, the iPhone 7 features an aluminium body that provides a comfortable grip and weight. Unlike the iPhone 5c or even the 3G, Apple’s second generation of the iPhone, that feature plastic backings, the weight of the metal gives the phone a feeling of quality and luxury, though slightly lighter than the iPhone 6.
One of the first differences users will notice from previous versions of the iPhone, however, are the finishes. Apple has dropped Space Grey, which debuted on the iPhone 5, in favour of a black matte finish. They’ve also added Jet Black, which is a glossy black finish that has become extremely popular with users, causing this version of the iPhone to sell out almost immediately. Of course, Silver, Gold and Rose Gold are also still available on the iPhone 7 and all current models.
The absence of the antenna bands is also a welcome change to the iPhone 7 and gives the phone a cleaner and more minimalistic look, similar to iPhones released in years past.
Though the aesthetic remains roughly the same, there are some key differences in the hardware. Gone is the 3.5mm headphone jack featured on all other iPhone models before it. In its place, Apple has redesigned their headphones to include a lightning connector that plugs into the same single lightning port that the charger does.

The home button also got a redesign in the iPhone 7. Instead of a traditional button that clicks when pressed down, the touch sensitivity gives the users of the new iPhone a completely different tactile sensation.
One of the biggest changes to the iPhone 7, though least noticeable up front, is the inclusion of water and dust-resistance. For Apple fans, this feature is a long time coming, as it’s been featured in a number of other high-profile phones in the recent past. Its addition means reduced likelihood of damage caused by dropping your phone in the water or from dust getting into the ports and the body.
Display
The iPhone 7 receives a brand new beautiful display, and while it looks amazing, it’s no sharper than the one that appears on the iPhone 6s. The 4.7 inch, 326ppi, 1334 x 750 Retina display is crystal clear and the wide-color-gamut, the same that is featured in the iPad Pro and iMac, means it’s bright, rich and wonderfully colourful. Watching videos and movies is as good as its ever been on an iPhone, especially when combined with other new features, such as the dual speakers.
Audio
If audio is an important component to your mobile experience, the iPhone 7 delivers. Unlike models before it, the iPhone 7 now features two speakers on the bottom of the phone, one on either side of the lightning port. On previous versions, this was not possible due to the 3.5mm jack, though Apple has found a workaround. Not only are there two speakers on the phone, but they’re extra loud. In fact, the top volume on the iPhone 7 is double that of the iPhone 6. If you’re someone who regularly plays music from your iPhone, this means it’ll be loud and clear and can easily fill in if you don’t have access to a Bluetooth speaker.
This upgrade to the speakers doesn’t come without controversy, however. Apple’s decision to drop the 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPhone 7 has caused a stir in the Apple community and one that won’t be settled anytime soon. The 3.5mm jack has been an industry standard for decades and every other smartphone on the market features it, so it came as somewhat of a surprise to learn that Apple was dropping the jack in favour of its own lightning port connection. Though it’s a novel idea, in theory, this means that users cannot use their standard headphones in the new iPhone without the use of an adapter dongle. It also means that users cannot use their lightning headphones at the same time the phone is charging because there is only one port.
The decision to not include the 3.5mm jack is just another step Apple is taking to make the future wireless, but it comes at a cost. Alongside the launch of the iPhone 7 was Apple’s own AirPods—wireless headphones that connect via bluetooth—though they come with a hefty price tag. It’s also worth noting that Apple’s new MacBook Pros do not include this new headphone technology and instead rely on the same old 3.5mm jack. This means, in order to use your iPhone 7 headphones in the new MacBook Pro, you’ll need another adapter. For many, this is seen as one step forward and two steps back.
Performance
Like other iPhones before it, the iPhone 7 comes with an all-new A10 fusion chip that makes this iPhone the most powerful yet. Though it retains the same 2GB of RAM as its predecessor, switching between apps and opening new ones is as quick as smooth as ever. 3D gaming and multitasking also works like a charm and overtakes the iPhone 6s in both categories, with graphics that shine.
In fact, the new iPhone is 30% faster than the 6s and 12% more powerful than Samsung’s Galaxy S7. For users of much older generations of the iPhone, this is a huge boost in processing power. If you’re upgrading from the 6s, however, it may not be a largely noticeable difference, as both are extremely powerful.
Operating System
The iPhone 7 also comes pre-installed with iOS 10, Apple’s latest iPhone operating system. While the look of the new OS remains mostly the same, there are a few tweaks here and there that will make the user experience all around more enjoyable.
iMessage now features larger emojis and sticker and even offers the ability to send doodles. The new touch home button also means that you can send a reading of your pulse that will appear as a graphic to other contacts. Apple Music also receives a much-needed refresh that streamlines the layout to make it more user-friendly.
Much of which makes iOS 10 great is its simplification. One of the biggest draws users will first experience on the new operating system is the ability to delete stock Apple apps, like Stocks, Podcasts, Find My Friends, etc. For many iPhone users, these apps were relegated to an extra folder and not touched, only taking up precious storage.
Camera
The new camera built into the iPhone 7 is also a big improvement over the iPhone 6s. This 12MP camera with OIS works a lot better in low light and delivers results in nearly every condition. It’s wider aperture allows for more light into the sensor, leading to clearer photos with a reduction in the depth of field. The front-facing, 7MP camera also received a boost so selfies and FaceTime video chatting are improved too. Though it’s an upgrade from previous iPhones, the new camera doesn’t perform leaps and bounds better than that of the Samsung Galaxy S7, but definitely, stands out in low or mixed light settings.
Battery
Like with most other aspects of the iPhone 7, the battery itself receives a nice boost when compared to the iPhone 6s. The 7 battery can now last up to two hours longer than its predecessor. That increases life when using the internet and wireless video playback, which jumps from 11 hours to 13 hours, while talk time and standby remain the same.
Real World Water Proof Test
So after a trip to Gran Canaria in Spain, I put the iPhone 7 through its paces. Both in terms of the claim from Apple that it is dust resistant and also water resistant. Although Apple do state that the iPhone can lose its water resistance over time, therefore the warranty does not cover water damage.
Kean to test how water proof was I jumped in the pool and took some under water footage.
Note Apple doesn’t support this under their Apple Care Scheme, so if your phone was to get damaged you are on your own. I tried it anyway and a few minutes after getting out of the water, the phone was asking me to insert a new SIM Card.
Panic struck in as I had just destroyed my new iPhone. I removed the SIM, dried it out with a hair dryer and put it back in again.
Thankfully the phone started to work again but it’s safe to say, I won’t be taking such massive risks in future.
Conclusion
The iPhone 7 is a dazzling piece of tech that not only performs well but looks like a work of art in and of itself. Though it includes a number of key upgrades and improvements, for users of the iPhone 6 or 6s, it may not be enough to justify a purchase, especially considering its price. For users of older models, however, the iPhone 7 will perform circles around older generations as nothing in anything before the iPhone 6 can match the A10 chip.
The decision to not include the 3.5mm headphone jack may be a turnoff for some, but as time goes on, it may prove to be less of an issue than expected. As iPhone 7’s continue to sell, it’s likely that the iPhone 6 and 6s will also drop in price to sell off existing stock. For those looking for a similar performance to the iPhone 7 but with a 3.5mm headphone jack, this may be their best option. The process requires proper understanding of light in its fine form with right setting to capture the light . Fine art results after you have spent enough years perfecting art of photography and its curation and understanding all elements of recording best image and only and only when your heart mind and soul says so with your audience and experience that you are ready to name it as Fine Art . My new Samsung Galaxy S3, very powerfull phone, in benchmarks eclipses all other phones out there.
HTC One X or Galaxy S3, the two are fantastic and fast, Sense 4 is a more beautiful Skin, and very fast, a little more polished than Galaxy S3.
Galaxy S3 is a little more powerfull, and heats less than tegra 3, but games graphics on HTC One X are better, thanks to Tegra 3.
These are the actual two kings of android, any one of them is a good purchase.
