Photographs by Iam A Burn
First Year Photography students at the University of Sunderland made their own photographic projects in response to ‘Picture the Poet’ at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens.
Students each selected one poem written by one of the poets featured in the exhibition. They then made their own creative reinterpretations of the poem, using photography to explore the imagery, language and ideas in the poetry. Some of the work they made can be seen in the collection presented here.

I am alone when I get up everyday
I feel startled to think
I have to spend one more day! !
I am alone in breakfast table with my tea,
I try to think positive;
I am alone, and I think I am free…
I am alone when I walk,
There is no one to hold my hand
And walk beside me to take me back…
I am alone when I am happy
I don’t have a friend to share my joy
I feel scared and unsteady
When I dream, I am alone
I see myself sitting in a beach
Playing saxophone ..
I am – yet what I am none cares or knows;
My friends forsake me like a memory lost:
I am the self-consumer of my woes –
They rise and vanish in oblivious host,
Like shadows in love’s frenzied stifled throes –
And yet I am, and live – like vapours tossed
Into the nothingness of scorn and noise,
Into the living sea of waking dreams,
Where there is neither sense of life or joys,
But the vast shipwreck of my life’s esteems;
Even the dearest that I loved the best
Are strange – nay, rather, stranger than the rest.
I long for scenes where man hath never trod
A place where woman never smiled or wept
There to abide with my Creator, God,
And sleep as I in childhood sweetly slept,
Untroubling and untroubled where I lie
The grass below – above the vaulted sky.
