Did you know? In France you are able to be imprisoned together with convicted criminals, on the whim of a judge, without any evidence. In fact, the justification for imprisonment even acknowledges the lack of evidence; 'to avoid the destruction of evidence'. Evidence that hasn't been found in over a year. Of course this all goes away if you pay an enormous bond. I wasn't aware that prison was a torture device to get false confessions and the Department of Justice was a fundraiser for the state; so much for being a developed country. A very worrying reflection on the French justice system, and an insult to those who pay taxes and look to this system for 'justice'.

As for all the noise made about the 'droits de l'homme'... perhaps, before pointing fingers at China, one should sort out one's own house? As usual, the hypocrisy of the Sarkozy administration makes me want to puke!

Macau's Portuguese center has been touristified, but retains its colonial paving pattern and windy street network. Evan finds it a simulacra, a somehow hypocritical bit of fakery in comparison to the "refreshingly inauthentic" casinos. I wonder, though. The argument hinges on the idea that the historic centre is pretending to be real (pretending being a bad thing, I guess); this pretense is accomplished mainly by the device of location. Anything located in the "real" center that tries to look historic is phony; anything located in the reclaimed casino land of Taipa-Coloane, whatever its appearance, can't be pretending to "realness" and is therefore free to be as stupid as it wants. I'll join Evan in admiring the casinos (with reservations) but I wonder: if one of the casinos were, I dunno, the "Macau Macau," and featured reproduction Portuguese "streets" identical to the ones seen here (which in fact have to bear some considerable trace of the "real" historical streetscape)...what then?
