Our space is full of some small and some huge rocks flying in between the planets called asteroids. While flying in between the planets they sometimes come dangerously close to earth. If a huge asteroid comes towards our planet scientist have a plan to push it on a different path.
Bennu is a B-type asteroid with a ~500 meter diameter. It completes an orbit around the Sun every 436.604 days (1.2 years) and every 6 years comes very close to Earth, within 0.002 AU. These close encounters give Bennu a high probability of impacting Earth in the late 22nd century. Bennu might slam into Earth on September 25, 2135. While the chances are slight (just 1 in 2,700), the impact would wreak devastation. Its kinetic energy would be roughly 80,000 times the energy of the Hiroshima bomb that exploded over Japan in 1945.
There is a spacecraft concept called HAMMER (Hypervelocity Asteroid Mitigation Mission for Emergency Response). HAMMER would slam a device called a kinetic impactor into Bennu, which would alter the asteroid's path in space. This is all under NASA's mission called OSIRIS-REx.
