Courtney needs help! 10 years ago we did a small TNR project on Melrose St. Two of the cats from this project are still going strong despite some recent setbacks. One, Bean, was attacked by a raccoon and had to have a leg amputated. The other, Courtney, has been trucking along well but due to recent weight loss her caretakers took her in to see the vet. They determined she badly needs a dental cleaning and extraction, plus she has hyperthyroidism which will require ongoing medication. The estimate for all this is about $1000. Can you spare a few bucks for an old Bushwick Street Cat? Please donate if you can, either through our donation page (link in bio) or directly to the caretakers' Venmo: @ Lauren-Corry-1 See the last pic for what she looked like when we first trapped her. Thanks both to those who donate and Courtney's amazing caretakers for keeping her going all this time! #helpCourtney #catsofbushwick #feralcat #TNR #seniorcat #seniorferal ❤️ Help Courtney ❤️ You may or may not be familiar with one of Bushwicks local celebrities, a @bushwickcats TNR OG Courtney! She was trapped about 8-9 years ago and has stuck around Melrose street and been under our care with helpful neighbors for over 6 years. She’s very friendly but very outdoors oriented and in her senior years. We noticed she was losing weight and having trouble with eating - brought her to the vet and found that shes luckily FIV/FL negative but a thyroid condition and needs a rotting tooth pulled. Between our house and the neighbor we will be able to manage the meds and fronted costs for her assessment, but need help get her tooth pulled as it may cost up to $1000. Any amount of money donated will go directly to her care. We want Courtney to enjoy her senior years! Accepting cash donations (if you are in the area and want to meet up) or via Venmo. Will post process updates as we get them! Reposted from @caffiend314 instagr.am/p/CoU5OJSORg0/

My sweet Tali died today. She'd had a lot of various illnesses over the years, and this was a flare-up of her hyperthyroidism and maybe her Inflammatory Bowel Disease—we think. She was doing a bit better but then took a turn for the worse yesterday. Several hours at the emergency vet helped, but she wasn't going to live very long. So we said goodbye.
Tali was my first cat, and she was incredibly sweet, understanding, and loving. She's at the Rainbow Bridge with our dog Siskiyou, getting the proper grooms that Siski used to give her (and that she could never quite teach Bear to do right).
Sleep well, my girl. I love you. Thank you for being in my life.

On medication now. Debating iodine treatment, but he is 14, so kind of a tough decision. Lost a lot of weight, but seems to be gaining a bit back now that I'm feeding him 2 or 3 times a day. He is noisy enough that it is hard to forget to feed him when he is hungry. The medication hasn't completely mellowed him. He still likes to wake us up at the crack of dawn, usually by sitting on my neck.
Neko was treated for hyper-thyroidism, a condition where a tumour within the thyroid glad over-produces various hormones. This results in a variety of symptoms, from weight loss (see how skinny she is now compared to before - she lost over 2 kg), excessive moulting, constant thirst, over-eating, etc.
The treatment consists of Neko being injected with radioactive iodine, which is absorbed by the tumour and kills the affected cells (leaving the healthy ones alone - clever!)
So now I have a radioactive cat! (For about another week, anyway, before it dissipates).
I am looking for the first signs of mutant super-powers developing, but so far, no luck.
She is small little kitty who suffers from hyperthyroid disease. She's a tiny thing who is about 9 to 11 years old. She loves to play...what a gorgeous little girl. She's in Special Needs #1 but will eventually be moved to Special Needs #2.

Lycopus europaeus (Gypsywort, Gipsywort, Bugleweed, European Bugleweed, Water Horehound, Ou Di Sun) is a perennial plant in the Lycopus genus, native to Europe and Asia, and naturalized in the United States.
Gypsywort grows primarily in wetland areas. Its root is a rhizome. It is in flower from June to September, and produces seeds from August to October.
It is reputed to have medicinal qualities and has been used by various peoples as an astringent, cosmetic, douche, narcotic and refrigerant.
The name Gypsywort comes from the belief that Gypsies were reputed to stain their skin with the juice of the plant.
Gypsywort is a medium to short perennial growing to about 1m. With its flowers in whorls, square stem and opposite leaves it looks rather like a mint with strongly notched leaves, however, it is different in being odourless and having two not four stamens per flower. The flowers, which are present from June to September, are white dotted with purple.
Gypsywort (Lycopus europaeus) is an herbal plant that has no culinary purposes at all but rather is used for industrial and medicinal purposes. This plant originated in Europe and Northwest Asia. Gypsywort's most important properties come from the stem and the leaves. These were used for the astringents, sedatives, anxiety, tuberculosis, and heart palpitations. Industrially, Gypsywort was extremely beneficial in making a permanent black dye. Oddly enough that is how it got its name, the Gypsies were said to have stained their skin with this black dye like substance so they would resemble Africans or Egyptians while they were performing.
Gypsywort has no known hazards and usually grows near rivers, streams and ravines. You will likely find this plant from June to September but the seeds are the most ripe between August and October. A unique physical characteristic of this plant is that is has both male and female organs so it is self fertiling, pollinated by insects and bees. In a survival situation, the root of the Gypsywort could be eaten raw or cooked.
The flowers of this plant are used for astringents and sedatives but also have an iodine property to it that is commonly used for hyperthyroidism. The entire plant has been known to slow and strengthen heart contractions, treat coughs and bleeding from the lungs, and excessive menstral periods, and the leaves are great for cleaning wounds. Heart disturbances and nervousness can be eased by the use of Gypsywort. The part that is rendered for use is the flowering plant itself and the best time to gather these is June - September. It is a sedative, because it reduces the pulse rate in conditions involving an overactive thyroid gland by reducing the activity of iodine. It was once prescribed for hyperthyroidism and related disorders such as Basedow's disease which is an immune disorder of the endocrine system that stimulates the thyroid causing an overactive condition leading to hyperthroidism. This is also called Graves' disease.
Most intriguing is its supposed contraceptive effect. Lycopus virginicus was already known among native American Indians because of its fertility inhibiting properties. Theoretical this plant could be used as a kind of birth control pill. But... of course I don't advise to try this out, because I don't guarantee the intended result. However....., one of the Dutch commentators, looking at the photo, supposed that using this plant as a chastity belt would for sure be effective ! ;) Ouch !!

(Winterhoff e.a.: Horm. metabol. Res. 15/503-507 – 1983).
;) Au !!

After undergoing radiation treatment for a non-malignant tumor causing hyperthyroidism, Jade spent three weeks in isolation. Today was her day to reemerge back to the family as a much healthier cat.

Many of the studies on Astragalus are preliminary, but they are promising.

These studies are recent, undeveloped and further research is needed
He always loved working the camera, w/o a doubt, the only cat I've owned that love the camera.
Sadly, we lost Monster in July 2014... RIP our beloved Monster, we miss you beyond words...a tribute to our best friend for 17 years.... so much to say about a cat we could not say good-bye to, but finally had to let him go. In 2006, he lost a kidney and lived in ICU Cheshire Veterinary Hospital and Emergency Center for almost 2 weeks, costing us a significant portion of the down payment of our house. Since then he survived living w/ one kidney, in renal failure, hyperthyroid and had cardiomyopathy. He was a fighter, an affectionate love-bug, and sometimes a mean S.O.B. but always the alpha male of our home - no other dog or cat (not even my neighbor's doberman) would cross his path. He loved protecting his home and I think even us. I loved watching him and his daily routine of walking to the end of the driveway and back, then settling up on the stonewall to snooze away the afternoon, as if guarding his territory. He was a brave old soul and a cat we will never forget.
ever notice how kids seem to be in another world when they are doing something? i had the camera trained on this one...she didn't know it. i think i caught her doing something cute!
(this image was kind of grainy and not totally in focus -blame that on my hyperthyroid making my hands shake- so i threw nichole van's vintage black and white over it. this image of her really spoke to my heart....so i wanted to create something post worthy!)
She is small little kitty who suffers from hyperthyroid disease. She's a tiny thing who is about 9 to 11 years old. She loves to play...what a gorgeous little girl. She's in Special Needs #1 but will eventually be moved to Special Needs #2.
The veterinary pharmacy sent a gift for Hallie with her new transdermal medicine for hyperthyroidism. (She isn't tolerating the pills.)
Just a boxful of cat toys helps the medicine go down, I guess...
I had planned to take a shot of the monster snowstorm today, but it's taking its time in arriving.
And for the 2022.02.02 date, there are two things in the box. :D
My eldest cat Keiko has been doing fine on her thyroid pills--we are relieved. With the warm sunny weather she's been really active. Just a few snap shots taken outside yesterday.

Blackie died peacefully in his sleep, with me by his side, and didn't suffer. He had hyperthyroidism but lived a full and active life, right up until the end. May you rest in peace, my dear Black. I love you.
So we had to replace our waterbed mattress. Joy. But in moving bedding and whatnot around, Isis immediately climbed up onto the highest, most comfortable spot she could find and declared herself queen, which, of course, she is. She turned 16 this year and had developed hyperthyroidism about a month before we were supposed to leave for China for a period of one year. We ended up taking her to our local radiocat facility and getting the radioactive iodine treatment. It's a permanent cure. We are able to get it done the week before we had to leave and she seems fine and cured now. Yay!
I've been told by many folks that I don't put enough effort into photographing our family pet so I've resolved to try to get at least one good shot of her per week. Here she is looking out the patio door keeping tabs on the local feeder birds.
For those of you that don't know Ginger from my previous shots of her, she is a female calico mix that we rescued from a friend's backyard when she was abandoned by her mother. At the time she was clearly the runt of her litter because while she had made it to weaning but was still only about the size of a baseball when she would curl up in your hands. Badly undernourished and totally flea infested we decided to bring her home but after a few good meals and more than just a few treatments with flea spray she became quite the member of the family.
At this point, Ginger has been with us for over 16 years and is still as crazily energetic as she was when she was a kitten. Still a bit of a runt, she barely tips the scales at 6 pounds. She also requires a pill twice a day to keep her hyperthyroidism in check. My guess, though, is that she will likely outlive me.
reposted ; GOOD NEWS ! her 'T4 ' level has dropped! , & waiting for more results ....
Hoping to lower her meds dosage yet again !
These days you will find many people suffering from certain ailments like rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia & hyperthyroidism. At a certain point their body fails in tolerating all that pain caused due to these issues and they need a proper treatment that can help them to get rid of this uncomfortable situation. In such cases, Physiotherapy is the best option to choose. Now, let’s discuss some of the ways by which the field of Physiotherapy NSW can prove itself fruitful for our body.
Hodjee is not doing well at all. She is having trouble breathing now. She still has some bite in her though.
I tried to give her antibiotics and hyperthyroid medication just now and she bit entirely through my finger with her fangs.
I was able to give her antibiotics, but not the hyperthyroid meds. I may try again, but then again... I just don't think she's going to make it.
Man, she still knows how to bite though. Well played, Hodjee. Well played.
My 15 year old girl having a little outside time--under supervision. She's been having a tough time lately battling hyperthyroidism, UTI, irritable bowl and not liking the medications for all. She seemed a bit better today and was quite active.
Today I had my 18 month post-radiation check up. All is well and frankengland continues to behave itself. Now I just take one of these little pills every day (Thyroxine, 50 ug).
Two years ago this was my life. I like my life now much better!
