My sweet kitty. I found out this week that he is hyperthyroid. Common in older cats, but we must take a pill twice a day.
Luckily he takes it with treats no problem, at least the first three have gone down. Hopefully he won't pick up on the trick. Poor guy.
she's getting so skinny. i'm worried about her.
EDIT: the vet says she has hyperthyroidism, which is apparently common in older cats. she just needs ongoing medication for it. this condition is responsible for all her weight loss, and her change in personality from fearful to brave.

With the resurgence of Argent's hyperthyroidism she has become more affectionate (which is typical for cats with this disease). The vet increased Argent's dosage of her thyroid medicine which will hopefully help.
Pickles the Miniature Pinscher/Manchester Terrier mix was found in a "saucy" part of Tucson, zigzagging to avoid traffic through a congested intersection. Someone who adopted two of our puppies contacted us to help, and while we ordinarily cannot afford to take in strays, get them healthy and altered, and then adopted, we took a chance on Pickles.
MANY vet visits later we learned that Pickles had an insane hyperthyroid issue that would soon be fatal as well as advanced valley fever in his bones. He also has at least one bb lodged in his side.
Pickles' health is now mostly stablized with aggressive doses of medication, other than the dramatic seizures we've seen a couple of times. Meanwhile, Pickles is the friendliest dog that all the other canines want as a buddy.
Through all of his medical issues we decided that we didn't want to adopt out the onus and potential shorter lifespan, so Pickles went from a stray, to a foster, to a forever home all very quickly.

Our lady should come home tomorrow after 5 days at the vets on a drip. Our rescue feline with hyperthyroidism suffered a bad inner ear infection and now has non-regenerative anaemia. X-rays, blood tests and an ultrasound haven't found the cause. It will be good to have her home even through the prognosis isn't good.

I have two cats, Bruno and Tony. This is Bruno, who is my older cat (about 15 years old). This is his "glamor shot". This is what he does most of the time. The rest of the time he has OCD. He likes to sit on my lap for a couple of minutes, then go away for a couple of minutes, and then he wants to do it again...and again, and again. If I'm running water in the sink or getting icewater out of the fridge, he comes running and wants fresh, cold water.
I can always tell when Bruno is happiest...he convulses. I've never seen a cat do that before. He'll be purring away, and his eyes are smiling, and then suddenly his head quickly shakes forwards and backwards slightly while his eyes squint. I was worried the first time I saw that, but eventually I figured that's a natural "rush" for him. (It's not an orgasm...he was neutered as a kitten.) Every afternoon I give my cats a treat...one of those cat food packets that has meat with gravy in it. Bruno LOVES the gravy and usually leaves the meat, so I squeeze out most of the gravy into one dish for him with a little meat and put most of the meat in another dish for Tony; it seems to keep them happy.
A few months back, Bruno developed hyperthyroidism and needed a radiation treatment. It wasn't cheap, but I decided to go for it, and today Bruno is fine (well, he's a little fatter than before). That will likely mean that I'll have my old buddy for several more years.
But, he might have had a stroke. Staggering on his right side. Still eating and drinking, though. And I was thinking he was in pretty good shape these days. He had gained back a lot of weight that he lost due to the hyperthyroidism and the kidney disease was stable. But, he is getting on in years. 16 now. Born 1/4/94.

Portrait of Argent yesterday evening as she sat on my lap. She lost quite a bit of weight - at first we thought it was her hyperthyroidism but that's under control and she's still too thin... With luck (and lots of kitty snacks), she'll recover.
An estimated 27 million Americans have thyroid disease, and more than half are undiagnosed. Frequently misunderstood, and too often overlooked and misdiagnosed, thyroid disease affects almost every aspect of health. Taking care of it with good nutrition is a smart step in the right direction. Here are some superfoods that research has shown can nurture a healthy thyroid, as well as some ones to avoid.
Coconut and coconut butter, or more commonly known as coconut oil, has been used as a food and medicine since the dawn of history. Unlike saturated animal fats found in meats and dairy products, coconut butter is a raw saturated fat containing fatty acids which the body can metabolize efficiently and convert to energy quickly. Research also shows it helps to regulate thyroid function.
Kelp is a stellar, nutrient-dense sea vegetable. It is also known as Laminaria and contains a natural substance that enhances flavor and tenderizes. Kelp works as a blood purifier, and promotes adrenal, pituitary and thyroid health. Its natural iodine may help normalize thyroid-related disorders, like overweight, and lymph system congestion.
Turkey is one of the leanest protein foods and is low in calories, making it an excellent healthy food choice. Turkey also contains selenium which has been shown to inhibit cancer development, improve the immune system, and aid in the metabolism of our thyroid hormone.
Thyroid patients should avoid the consumption of goitrogens, substances that suppress the function of the thyroid gland, and which can also cause an enlargement of the thyroid. Goitrogens are in foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, mustard, kale, turnips, and canola oil. Soy and peanuts also include goitrogens and should be avoided.
Both copper and iron are so important for thyroid function, so thyroid patients should take time to make sure they're getting enough in their diets. Foods such as organ meats, oysters, clams, crabs, cashews, sunflower seeds, wheat bran cereals, whole-grain products, and cocoa products are all rich in copper. Foods like leafy green vegetables, beans, shellfish, red meat, and poultry are high in iron. Complement your iron intake with adequate amounts of vitamin C from foods such as citrus fruits, red berries, tomatoes, potatoes, and bell peppers to help maximize your body's iron absorption efficiency.

Orange Stripe the cat flipped the hell out when HU and I had to take her in to the vet. I wound up with these hand wounds as well as a scratch down my arm and punctures and holes on my chest and stomach. This was all just in getting her into a cat carriers.
As suspected, she suffers from a hyperthyroid condition, which is quite common for middle-aged and older cats. She's being treated now. I'm not looking forward to taking her back to the vet, though.

She is 12 years now. She has a heart defect and hyperthyroidism and arthrosis. Thus she is extremely skinny and her body is older than her age. She has hardly any teeth, but eats like a horse. And she's doing surprisingly well!

Thanksgiving 2013 - Old man, Raven. Rescued last year from a local shelter where he was surrendered due to being a nuisance to his owners whom he'd been with for 14 years, he is 16 years old, de-clawed, suffers hyperthyroid & takes meds twice a day because of it. This old guy is the epitome of kitty class.
Keiko is sick
As you may remember, she was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and started on medication earlier this month. We suspect the meds are making her sick [vomiting].
We took her to our vet this morning for an exam, sub-fluids, anti-nausea injection and check her thyroid levels. If it is the medication making her sick, we're up a creek.....because it will mean we'll have to go with surgery or radioactive iodine therapy.
She's home now and we'll get blood work back tomorrow. Our vet doesn't think it's the medication making her sick--but it's the only thing that's changed in her world...so it has to be.
Update: Blood work back. Kidneys ok. Thyroid level is now a bit low. We will try her back on meds when she's feeling better but can reduce the dose
Sam was diagnosed as being mildly Hyperthyroid yesterday. Blood work showed his T4 to be 5 (normal is lower than 4). He's started on Tapazole, and hopefully that will get him back to normal. He has had some weight loss and other issues that alarmed me to take him in for a geriatric check up.
If this is all we have to deal with at 14-1/2 years of age, I think that's pretty good.

Everything You Need to Know About Every Thyroid Disorder: Signs, Symptoms, Causes, Treatments
The hormones in the body have a role to support the communication between every function, so any imbalance can be the cause of a short of health issues. Thyroid disorders affect over 4% of the American citizens.
The thyroid gland affects almost all of the metabolic processes in the body, and these thyroid disorders can range from a small, harmless goiter that does not require any treatment, to life-threatening cancer. The most common thyroid problems involve abnormal production of thyroid hormones, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism.
Hypothyroidism is a condition of an underactive thyroid, which is characterized by weight loss, fatigue, slow metabolism, constipation, and brain fog. It is most often a result of:
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis: It is a type of hypothyroidism that occurs when the immune system does not recognize the thyroid gland cells and the enzymes and inhibits the production of thyroid hormone
Exposure to excessive amounts of iodide
The use of certain drugs
Removal of the thyroid gland
On the other hand, hyperthyroidism is developed when the thyroid gland is hyperactive thyroid, elevating the levels of the thyroid hormone. Its most common causes include:
Toxic adenomas: Nodules develop in the thyroid gland and release thyroid hormones, upsetting the body’s chemical balance
Graves’ disease: The excessive production of thyroid hormone.
Subacute thyroiditis: Inflammation of the thyroid that urges the gland to “leak” excess hormones, leading to temporary hyperthyroidism that in most cases lasts for a few weeks
Pituitary gland malfunctions or cancerous growths in the thyroid gland
It leads to symptoms such as anxiety, muscle weakness, trouble sleeping, nervousness, and accelerated metabolism.
Thyroid disorders are usually diagnosed via a blood test and are usually treated with some prescription drugs like levothyroxine, synthetic hormones, and many other anti-thyroid medications.
However, the first step towards better health and relief in the case of thyroid disorders is to do some lifestyle and dietary changes.
The following foods are incredibly beneficial in case you suffer from hypothyroidism:
