New Maisto casting which even with its budget Fresh Metal status could probably have turned out better. Its proportions don't seem right to me and paint application which is a bit on the thick side. Front and rear detailing does help a bit though. Found recently in a Spanish Alcampo hypermarket. Mint and boxed.
I was hoping I would find a few Welly models at some French Carrefour hypermarkets but as it turned out their products are very widely available in many retailers where they are usually distributed and packaged by a company called Wonderkids. It meant ample opportunity to grab a few more of these astonishingly well cast Land-Rover Defender models and drool at their absolute completeness and the fact it really has been designed primarily for children as a toy!
This model really couldn't look any more crisp if it tried thanks to this effortlessly clean all white paint finish only broken up by the necessary front and rear painted detailing. Plastic wheel arches, a proper matching spare wheel and alloy effect all show that Welly don't need to worry about making their 1/64 models fit under a one Dollar price point! Mint and boxed.

Exterior of the Walmart Supercenter in Glen Burnie, Maryland.
This store is somewhat unusual as Walmart stores go. According to what I've found, this store was built in 1991 as a Leedmark hypermarket store, which closed in 1994. Following the closing, Walmart and Mars Supermarket occupied space in the building. A long interior corridor existed along the front of the building. The Mars store closed in 2008, and Walmart expanded to a Supercenter in late 2010.
While the building now looks mostly like a typical Walmart Supercenter, clues to the building's past remain. The building is taller and boxier outside, the ceilings are higher inside, there are no skylights, and additional supports from the (now demolished) interior corridor are visible at the front of the store.

This store was opened as a Kmart prototype in 1992. In 2000 Kmart built a 50,000 square foot expansion onto the back of the store and converted it to a Super Kmart. This store is currently the only conversion of a early 1990s build Kmart to a Supercenter that is still intact. This is also the only Super Kmart currently at a mall, in fact the Super Kmart in Caguas, Puerto Rico should have been the only other mall location ever.

The Forest Fair Mall was opened in 1989 and originally featured Bigg's Hypermarket, Bonwit Teller, B. Altman, Elder-Beerman, Parisian, and Sakowitz as anchor stores. By the early 2000s, all of the anchor stores original to the mall had closed except for Bigg's Hypermarket.
The mall underwent two major renovations since its debut. One was done in the early 1990s to make the mall more of a discount-based mall and cost $8 Million. Mills later took over the mall and spent nearly $70 million renovating the struggling mall into Cincinnati Mills, which opened in 2004. Bass Pro Shops, Showcase Cinemas, Kohl's, and Burlington Coat Factory later moved into the mall to replace the original anchor stores. Mills was later taken over by Simon Malls. After struggling to keep the mall filled, Simon sold the mall off. The name was changed to Cincinnati Mall in 2009. The mall reportedly changed its name to Forest Fair Village in 2013 but never officially changed any of the exterior or interior signs saying "Cincinnati Mall".
This mall is very modern for a dead mall. I guess it goes to show that some malls just can't be saved no matter how much money is poured into them. There are two other major malls within several miles of this one that were built earlier with more stable (in the long run) anchor stores like Sears and JCPenney. This mall was also built off an exit that didn't get nearly the development as around the area's other malls. The mall still seems most commonly refered to as Cincinnati Mills. Today, this nearly 2,000,000 square foot mall has only Kohl's, Bass Pro Shops (leaving later in 2015), and Babies R Us as anchor stores. The interior of the mall is (by my estimate) about 95% empty.

Briefly available in a multi-set at ASDA before being cruelly swept away by a wave of horrific HTI generics back in 2017 is the Maisto Ford Focus ST. Walmart continues to use Maisto in the U.S. but its U.K. offshoot obviously thought we would prefer models which dont replicate anything seen on the roads ANYWHERE!
This recent purchase was from a Spanish Alcampo hypermarket who use Maisto for their budget One Two Fun range. For the price its not a bad replica of this Ford Hot Hatch, no interior naturally and no doubt Maisto will be making this casting in this EXACT same colour for the next 30 years! Well detailed and far nicer than the HW equivalent!
Mint and boxed.
The last time I visited a Spanish Alcampo hypermarket which I think was just over a year ago they sold Majorette singles alongside the usual basic Hot Wheels. My latest visit revealed the Majorette have been replaced by Maisto which under normal circumstances would have annoyed anyone but as they had a selection of castings and recolours I haven't got it turned out to be a fruitful visit :-)
Basic these Maisto models may be but they arnt HTI generics and with a healthy selection containing licensed castings like this 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. You dont expect to find interiors on modern Maisto so you can't really claim disappointment at their absence. For a cheapie budget its realism and accuracy is on a par with Matchbox, cleanly sculptured, appropriately well detailed and now featuring much more acceptable wheels. Theres definitely still a place for diecasts like this here in the U.K. but virtually no big name retailers willing to switch from awful HTI crap! Sold under the One Two Fun brand. Mint and boxed.

<Val d'Europe
Val d'Europe is a part of the new town known as Marne-la-Vallée. The final area of the district is currently in development. It is located around 35 km to the east of Paris, near Disneyland Paris. Val d'Europe was built in conjunction with The Walt Disney Company, who wished to create a town near the Disney resort.
It was not until the start of 1998 that Val d'Europe saw the opening of its shopping centre, which included a hypermarket and boutiques. However, the garden centre (Delbard) was opened in 2004 in a building to the south of the shopping centre.
As of 2005, Val d'Europe has a population of 19,700 people, but this is expected to increase to 40,000 people and 60,000 employees.
The architectural style takes inspiration from the "neo-traditional" style of the Baron Haussmann, who supervised the construction of many buildings in Paris in the 19th century. The town plan, by Cooper, Robertson & Partners of New York City, was designed based upon traditional French town planning principles consistent with the New Urbanism, a design philosophy which is frequently used in the United States and used with the intent to plan new cities based upon known working principles studied by architects. Disney had previously created a New Urbanist city in Florida, known as Celebration, also designed by Cooper, Robertson & Partners. It is believed that Val d'Europe and Celebration are descendants of Walt Disney's original plan for The Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow – EPCOT, which was originally intended as Walt Disney's plan for a city of the future.
There is a large Auchan hypermarket, 130 shops and a food court known as "Les Terrasses." As well as a SEA LIFE aquarium indoor with about 300 species of marine creatures.

24 hour trading Kmart at Werribee Plaza. The centre opened in 1985 with a Super Kmart hypermarket as the original anchor tenant, later split into a Coles Supermarket and regular Kmart when the hypermarket concept was abandoned in Coles-Myer 1989.
The current Kmart is relocated from the original site - Stage 4 of the centre redevelopment shifted Kmart to the old Fresh Food Market area to the east of the Coles supermarket. The old Kmart area was divided into shops and a continuation of the mall to connect the separate building from Stage 2 (now Big W/Woolworths/Myer)

Getting here from home takes about 45 minutes. With the seamless transport of LRT and The Northeast Line, we would not mind to travel here for food and to shop for daily needs for a change sometimes. A round trip journey costs about S$4.30 per person.

A former shoe store, abandoned for almost 30 years . The place surprises with its size (about 4000 m2) , which could be compareable to a hypermarket. Many decisions have been (unsuccessfully) taken by authorities since 2002 to force the owner to arrange the site, but the old shopping complex continues to degrade over time…

Neptune Street no longer exists. It was once located five streets south of Porter Street but was cleared during the construction of the Mersey Tunnel. A Costco hypermarket now occupies the site.

One of the few occasions where it doesn't really matter if the model has no interior must surely apply to this particular Maisto Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. The blacked out windows suit its menacing look which runs to blacked out wheels and a matte black paint finish. A predictably basic casting from Maisto but its looks crisp enough to warrant its licensed status. Part of a five vehicle set found recently in a Spanish Al Campo hypermarket. Mint and boxed.

Quite the selection of Maisto "Mercedes-Benz Sprinter" castings to be found in the toy section of Alcampo hypermarket just outside of Barcelona. A clever use of metal and plastic, mainly plastic, to keep costs down but still very crisply cast and nicely detailed for its budget status.

This building was originally built as the first Bigg's Hypermarket and a small adjoining mall / shopping center called Bigg's Place Mall in 1984. The Bigg's Hypermarket closed in 2010 and has since been tranformed into Jungle Jim's second massive grocery store. I am pretty sure this Jungle Jim's is the nation's largest grocery store at a whopping 215,000 square feet (larger than most supercenters or department stores)!
This is an actual "mall" area inside of a grocery store! Apparently these spaces are leased out by Jungle Jim's and are not directly operated by the store itself. I am not familiar to how this building was before it became Jungle Jim's but I believe this was a section of the original Bigg's Place Mall.

2727 Brice Road in Columbus, Ohio. This store officially "relocated" in 2008 to 8300 Meijer Drive in Canal Winchester, Ohio, but that store is too far from this one for me to use the word "relocated". Currently, an auto dealership is using the interior of the store to store cars.
There is another dead Meijer store on Georgesville Road in Columbus.

This store was built in 1990 as a Twin-Valu Hypermarket. In 1995 Twin-Valu closed this store and Super Kmart moved into this building a year later. The Kmart relocated from an old Clarkins store. This store closed as Super Kmart in the 2003 Kmart closure wave. From 2009 through 2011 this building was used as the Great Lakes Exposition Center. This store is situated in an area where only one retail store is left open; I doubt much will happen to this store for at least the next few years.
Inside of GUM, Moscow, Russia.
Directly opposite the Mausoleum, on the eastern side of the square, lies the building which houses Russia's most famous shopping mall - the State Department Store, GUM. Since the fall of communism, several other shopping centers and hypermarkets have sprung up to rival it in prestige, but GUM retains its status as a consumer Mecca for visitors to Moscow. In the Soviet Union, the top floor was home to Section 100, a secret clothing store only open to the highest echelons of the party. Nowadays the rows of exclusive boutiques are accessible to anyone with a platinum card. That said, the building itself is glorious, and there are still a few more interesting relics of a bygone era on the higher floors that make it well worth exploring.
The site has been used for trading throughout history. By 1520 there was already a large stone arcade standing here. Fire destroyed the old Upper Trading Rows, as they became known, and the current building was completed in 1893. A joint project between architect Aleksander Pomerantsev and engineer Vladimir Shukov, its steel framework and glass roof were, at the time, on the cutting edge of technology, and give GUM a certain resemblance to a large European station. It has an area to match and, at the end of the 19th Century, it was the largest shopping center in Europe. Before the 1917 Revolution it contained a staggering 1,200 stores.
In 1928, GUM was closed by Stalin, who decided to use the building as the headquarters for officials working on the first Five Year Plan. GUM was reopened in 1953, and became one of the most popular sites for the legendary Soviet queues, which could at times extend all the way across Red Square. After privatization in the early 90s, it rapidly became the address of choice for top-end Western retailers. Journalists and travel writers often comment on the sharp contrast between prices in GUM and poverty in Russia - as if the majority of New Yorkers get their clothes from Saks, or the average Londoner could afford to do their grocery shopping in Harrods. Even if you don't intend to buy anything, a tour of Red Square should always include a quick stroll down the aisles of GUM.
Brochure on the introduction of barcode scanning to Super Kmart in Australia from 1985. The first supermarket barcode scanners in Australia were introduced in 1979 at SIMS supermarket in Melbourne and were progressively introduced at major chains in the 1980s. Incidentally the first item scanned was a jar of Vegemite, which is depicted in this brochure.
Super Kmart was a chain of hypermarkets in Australia that operated between 1982 and 1989 when then-owners Coles Myer abandoned the concept. Located in the outer suburbs and larger country towns there were 34 stores around the country by 1989 combining the general merchandise of Kmart and the groceries of Coles (then Coles New World). Former locations were later divided into adjacent Coles and regular Kmart - many of which still trade today.
