Wild Horses

Didn’t wanna be a soldier

Wanted to be a child

Fall in love with the world, feel alive

Forced to be a hero

When I was left behind

Grew up in an instant to survive

“It’s a miracle," the crowd all screams

Everyone's so proud of me

But I’m a graveyard, oh I’m in deep

Miss the person I never got to be

Never got to be wild like the horses

Naive like a child

Horrors of the world came knocking, knocking

My feet were in the grass

Dancing through the trees

I saw it when heaven came falling, falling

Cried at cracks of thunder

Saw the flood appear

Swallowed everything I held near

Should’ve been wild like the horses

But I had to leave my childhood in the dirt

Six feet below me

Never saw it coming

Now I can’t relax

I’m all hyper-vigilance, under attack

Cuz I know a secret my friends don’t understand

Safety’s an illusion

Fate is all chance

“It’s a miracle," the crowd all screams

Everyone's so proud of me

But I’m a graveyard, oh I’m in deep

Miss the person I never got to be

Never got to be wild like the horses

Naive like a child

Horrors of the world came knocking, knocking

My feet were in the grass

Dancing through the trees

I saw it when heaven came falling, falling

Cried at cracks of thunder

Saw the flood appear

Swallowed everything I held near

Should’ve been wild like the horses

But I had to leave my childhood in the dirt

Six feet below me

I was way too young

I was way too young, way too

I was way too young

I was way too young, way too

How could you be gone?

How could you be gone, you be

How could you be gone?

How could you be gone, you be

When I close my eyes

I still feel the grass, feel the sun

Oh wild horses, how you run

Just before sunset on Bowman's Beach, Sanibel Island, Florida--during my 2019 spring trip to Florida.

Bowman's used to have an official nude section to the beach, but that disappeared a few years before my first trip to Sanibel. But walk down the beach far enough, and you can make it your own personal nude beach. While I was intent on taking photos here, I suddenly noticed a couple (MF) who were walking past. They showed no signs of being discomfited by my nudity. The fact that I did not notice them until they were upon me is testament to how comfortable I was. In many places while nude, I remain hyper-vigilant in order to jump into my clothing at any sign of a surprise visitation. Here, the isolation was great enough that I was able to relax completely. Mind you, in those locations where hyper-vigilance seems necessary, I am still able to relax to a great degree, but without that extra alertness, it makes being one with nature, without the barrier of textiles to interfere, so much better.

GRRRRRR!!!!!!! For some reason, I am unable to add this photo to any groups, other than a tiny handful. The section below the photo that shows the groups it belongs to and from which you can add it your groups does not exist for this photo. It's there for my other photos, but not this one. I have refreshed the page dozens of times to no avail.

The narrative posted below is very important to me.

Dogs Give Vets Faith in Society Again ......................................

Many veterans enjoy comfort, aid, and true bonding from their service dog. A specially-trained post-traumatic stress disorder service dog can interrupt agitation, wake a veteran from a traumatic nightmare, or perform a room search for a vet who suffers from hyper-vigilance.

"He's put faith back into my way of looking at society," army veteran Joe Aguirre said of his dog, who is trained to "sweep" an area for potential threats.

PTSD service dogs can also be a steady source of furry companionship, never leaving their beloved human alone with troubling thoughts.

"It's hard to imagine the level of despair of someone who suffers from PTSD," said one Boston-area Gulf War veteran. "It's exhausting, frightening, and somewhat surreal -- you've come back from active duty, but you are in an internal war."

This veteran feels his PTSD symptoms are "80 percent" managed -- but said he would have welcomed a PTSD service dog when he first returned home.

A 2014 RAND study found that 20 percent of veterans of the Iraqi and Afghanistan conflicts have PTSD. With 2.7 million veterans in total from those wars, that means some 540,000 vets are dealing with the disorder.

The VA does not pay for associated costs for training and obtaining a PTSD service dog. It will only pay for "evidence-based" therapies for PTSD -- such as cognitive processing.

If a veteran needs a service dog for PTSD, he or she must fill out a complex application with a registered therapy dog nonprofit, then sit back and wait (and hope) for a four-legged companion. The training of each PTSD service dog takes over a year.

"The dogs are specially bred for this work, [and are] with us for up to 18 months of highly specialized training, including nightmare and anxiety alerts," a representative of This Able Veteran, a PTSD service dog training academy in Carbondale, Illinois, told LifeZette in an email. "Veterans are brought to our facility from across the nation for three weeks for our trauma resiliency program."

Just like with several other non-profits that train and match PTSD service dogs with those who have served, cost is not a worry for the waiting vet. "We fundraise to offset all of these expenses, so there is no charge to our veterans," the This Able Veteran rep said.

The VA is now in the fourth year of a $12 million study to gauge the efficacy and costs of using dogs to help veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress. A veteran with a PTSD service dog will say, however, that the proof is in his or her ability to keep progressing in life after duty.

Some question whether the dogs are being trained to meet VA protocols that could actually reinforce PTSD fears, such as teaching the animals to "sweep" and "block" a room.

"He's put faith back into my way of looking at society," army veteran Joe Aguirre told The Associated Press of his dog Munger, who is trained to "sweep" an area for potential threats and "block" his owner from potential aggressors.

The dog is essentially searching for "anything that would be out of the ordinary. A bag. A particular weapon. People acting erratic," Aguirre told the AP. Aguirre's four tours of duty left him struggling with daily life.

The VA study has been beset by problems and criticism, the AP noted. Only 50 dogs, approximately, have been placed with veterans for the study, and some question whether the dogs are being trained to meet VA protocols that could actually reinforce PTSD fears, such as teaching them to "sweep" and "block" a room for threats.

Could this be a substitute for the taxing but necessary work that comes with a commitment to other therapies?

Meg Olmert is the chief research adviser for the Maryland-based Warrior Canine Connection. Her nonprofit has veterans train service dogs for other veterans, and advocates "softer" canine PTSD skills, such as picking up cues and providing appropriate support -- learning to wake someone up during a nightmare, or detecting when a veteran is anxious and interacting with him to calm him down.

Rep. Ron DeSantis, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform's national security subcommittee, introduced the Puppies Assisting Wounded Service Members Act, or the "PAWS Act," to create a $10 million project that would set aside $27,000 per dog for veterans diagnosed with the most severe forms of PTSD.

Funding would come out of a Veterans Affairs budget pegged for such things as convention planning and office decor, reported the Fairmont, West Virginia Timeswv.com. The House Veterans Affairs committee is scheduled to hear the bill next week.

A federal-level decision from the VA on covering the costs of the dogs for veterans with mental disorders won't be made until at least 2018.

"Veterans cannot wait until 2018. The problem of veteran suicides is too urgent," , said during an April hearing.

Former Marine Tony Austin would no doubt agree. After returning from active duty, he was struggling with PTSD and also rescued a bull mastiff named Hadji. Then, he learned about trained service dogs that help sufferers of PTSD.

"His whole point is disruption, to break my train of yelling," one veteran said of his dog's methods.

"I learned what these dogs can do, and I learned about what they can cost and how long it can take to get one," Austin told People Magazine of the process.

Along with struggling to meet the high costs of a service dog, Austin was having trouble going through the demanding application process to obtain a service dog due to his PTSD -- and what would he do with the newly rescued Hadji?

"We were having the conversation about getting rid of him or not, and he was lying on the couch between my wife and I," Austin told People of Haji. "The next night, or two nights later, was the first night he woke me up from a nightmare."

Austin suddenly wondered if the perfect PTSD service dog was already living under his roof.

"His whole point is disruption, to break my train of yelling," Austin said of Hadji's methods. "He breaks my focus and my train of thought and my sense of structure in my head on what I am gonna say. That disruption is not a reset switch, because you can't forget what was said or how it was said, but it's that opportunity to recalibrate and add some stuff with a new approach," Austin explained.

Austin's experience convinces him of the need for PTSD service dogs for those who are hurting. He has started his own nonprofit called Dog Tags and Capes -- he and his wife provide service dogs to other vets. "Hadji is definitely ," Austin told People.

Brooklyn has many neighborhoods, and many of them are shaped along ethnic lines. On the extreme end of this spectrum of ethnic exlusivity is the sprawling and growing Chasidic neighborhood around Crown Heights. The ultra-ultra-orthodox community here has the honor of being the fastest growing Jewish group in America. For the vast majority of Americans, a drive through the neighborhood would be quite a shock. Most of the residents speak Yiddish, and all of them are dressed in ultra-orthodox fashion. The signs on streets and shops are all in Hebrew script. The women, in observance of ultra-orthodox religious law, walk separately, away from men, keep their heads covered and/or wear wigs. The men, without exception, dress in a distinctively archaic fashion , somewhat like the Amish. They wear identical black overcoats which go down to near the knee, white hose on their legs, and black shoes. White shirts and white prayer shawls on fridays and saturdays. All the men have long forelocks and beards, and wear either black hats or these enormous round fur hats which look almost exactly like an expensive cat bed. Young boys all have their heads shaved, wear a skullcap and have forelocks. Among the more distinctive features, and the surest sign that you have entred the ultra-orthodox area, is the omnipresence of barred windows. Every window, even if it is on the 20th floor, is covered with massive metal security grills. Even high balconies are enclosed in bars and metal plates. Many areas are surrounded by high fences, walls, and endless coils of razorwire.

Among American ethnic groups, the ultra-orthodox community is uniquely insular, and almost completely closed to outsiders. Non-orthodox people who pass through, even in cars, are constantly observed, and with extreme suspicion and hostility. There is a very palpable air of hyper-vigilance, as if everyone is constantly on the look-out for threats. Unless you were a sort of undercover photographer, with a stealth camera, I would say it is impossible to get permission from anyone for portaits. If you try to stop to take pictures of signs or architecture, people will approach you and demand to know what you are doing, or make gestures telling you to leave. To insiders, there is undoubtedly a great deal of comfort and a sense of security in this posture, but to outsiders the neighborhood feels like a sort of hysterically nervous neon sign that says "GO AWAY!"

In its extreme isolation, the neighborhood has crystallized along different rabbinical lines, with at least eight major ultra-orthodox sects, each with their own rabbis and their own inter-sect feuds. (Interestingly, one such sect, the Satmar, is intensely anti-Zionist and advocates the dismantling of Israel). Each sect has begun to develop its own unique religious customs and mannerisms, some of which have led to conflict with local authorities. Among the biggest and wierdest political issues of the last Mayoral election involved an ancient form of ritualistic circumsision that is observed only among this community, in which the ritual circumsicion specialist - the mohel - sucks the blood from the infant's penis. After some local infants died and suffered brain damage from contracting Herpes through this procedure, the Mayor made the fatal mistake of recommending that the practice be stopped as a public health risk. In response, Chasidic leaders sent busloads of Jews into the city to protest wearing Yellow stars - like those the Nazis forced Jews to wear - at Bloombergs capmpaign appearances. A politically powerful Ultra-Orthodox rabbi issued a statement declaring "There is no compromise on this issue." Christopher Hitchens hacked "I'll trade him his stupid [smoking] ban if he states clearly that it is the government's business to protect children from religious fanatics." In the end, quite predictably, the Mayor - a secular Jew - was forced to back down, after which he recieved endless glowing praise for his great religious sensitivity.

The untouchability of the Chasidic community has grown exponentially since 1978, when 2000 rioting ultra-orthodox Jews besieged the New York Police Department's 66th precinct headquarters, injuring more than 60 NYPD cops. The Precintct has been jokingly known as "Fort Surrender" ever since, based on the common understanding that the Ultra-Orthodox Community can fix any problem with a phone call. Still, furious Chasids attacked NY cops in 1999 after one of their officers shot an ultra-orthodox man who attacked several officers with a hammer. More Chasidic rioting took place this week - hundreds of chanting ultra-orthodox jews surrounded the precinct, set fires in the streets, and a police car was torched after an NYPD cop dared to issue a traffic summons to an ultra-orthodox man.

Obviously this community is diverse and not well-represented by these violently retarded prima donnas. I just mention some of these things because they illustrate the peculiarly untouchable status enjoyed by the Chasidic community in NYC.

...

Last thursday morning, driving through the neighborhood, there were mobs of people gathered on every streetcorner around big fires. Barrciades were erected around them, with signs like these, which say "no aerosol cans, no glass bottles."

As an outsider it was very odd. Every streetcorner, one after another for miles, barricaded areas mobbed with ultra-orthodox men and boys around open fires. Overhead, air-raid sirens were going off. Later in the day, when all the pyromania was over and i was taking this photo, two orthodox girls stopped me to demand to know who i worked for, what magazine, why was I taking these pictures, what is my connection to the Jewish faith, am I a journalist, what am I doing in this neighborhood? I told them that I had seen all the fires that morning and wanted to take a picture of one of the signs. They explained that religious custom requires burning everything in your kitchen before Passover (Pesach). I asked about the air raid sirens. They said that the local Fire Marshall, in conjunction with religious authorities, turns on the city's air defense emeregency sirens to announce when it is time to put the fires out.

...

By way of explanation, the creepy treatment of this photo arose in response to two images: the streets full of cordoned off burning areas, mobbed with Jews, under the drone of air raid sirens; and the second, the same neighborhood, later in the day, streets empty of people.

Abandoned Abused Street Dogs.

Well the front row is mostly the usual suspects.

Mama got a swift, quick, serious spanking today.

We'll get to all that, but first lets set the narrative.

Arrived at 6AM sharp so you know I left before 5AM.

Roads weren't to bad but the sky smelled of water !

What's that mean you ask ? Means it's gonna rain !

Actually there was a thin mist in the air and soon

as the scooter was parked undercover, it rained.

That was a close call but by the time I had left

The Bingo Room loaded to the hilt, it stopped.

Now lets step back a bit. When I turned into

the temple grounds my gut feeling started

right in jabbering away. Red Flags every-

where, caution, alert, warning, warning !

Things were out of order, I don't do

well when things are that way.

Old Dogs want things to be

orderly an consistent.

No there wasn't any trip-wires or booby traps.

What there was is the gate at The Dog Palace

wasn't shut the way I always shut it, not right !

I studied the tracks in the dirt before entering.

They told me, size 9 mens military jungle boots.

Two size 9's and one size 8. My eyes cautiously

scanned the edges of the gate for anything out

of the ordinary or unusual.Nothing was found.

While my mind was playing games with me a

movement came flying in at the speed of light.

Mama, Rocky and Mickey had arrived and you

know what they did ? Crashed, then licked me.

Life is good and this old dog can continue on .

A little bit of hyper-vigilance ? Sometimes, but

I'm still here cuz I listen to my gut feelings. ;-)~

Once we had crossed The Concrete Walking Bridge

it was easy to see what was going on. Many military

men were here doing all kinds of cleaning and repair.

All of them stop and watch the white photo guy with

a bunch of dogs surrounding him. Now they video me.

Rows of plastic chairs and large canvas canopies are set

up in front of the cave for a special Buddha celebration.

Mama & Crew were taken care of at The Spirit House.

This photo was taken as I am heading to The Hooligans.

OK,

Now we'll discuss Mamas Spanking and how it went down.

What I'm about to tell you is something I've been doing

most of my life when reprimanding a medium to large dog.

Please, under no circumstances do I want you to do this !!!

My technique is just like any leader of the dog pack will do.

I know what to look for long before it happens and prepare

for it accordingly. Mollys boy friend, the black and light tan

German Shepard is a nervous new kid on the block. Today

he was friendly and wanted to come in closer for a sniff/lick.

I see Mamas hackles come up and her head dip down low !

In the same time frame the camera is slung behind my back

to the far left side right next to the soft cloth dog food bag.

My right hand swiftly comes up catching Mamas throat just

as she starts to lunge at Mr Boyfriend. Now here it gets real

tricky. Using her own weight she is brought down to the

ground on her back with me positioned right on top of her

all in one smooth motion.Plus I might add her muzzle is now

in my mouth as one hand still has hold of the scruff of her

throat. Huge vicious growling sounds leave my voice box

as time stands still for both Mama and myself. My eyes are

drilling lazier holes all the way through her soul via her eyes.

Maybe 40 seconds go by, possibly 50 or 60 as we stay

frozen in this position.Pressure from my hand and mouth

is slightly eased off. If any resistance is felt the pressure

is reapplied with vocal stimulate added for audio affect.

In due time I slowly release her and we both sit and

cool down. This can and often does take time. In a

firm but soothing voice we go over the rules. In

the six years Mama and I have been partners

this is only the second time this technique

has been done. It's always a last resort.

In ten years The Worm had to go

through this only once.

If it's done right and in a natural way the dog learns

they had crossed the line and won't ever do it gain.

FYI: Mama has for some unknown reason become

aggressive towards some of the dogs out here.

Old age, jealousy who knows but this was an

opportunity to put a stop to this behavior

while catching her in the actual act.

This is a last resort only !

Without sounding redundant - - - - -Do Not Do This !

If done improperly you will cause more harm then good.

And you could get yourself badly bit in the face and neck !

If you're bit in the face or neck, your expiration date is now up !

Moving right along, the new puppy has been named.

Mr Boyfriend has not. So I'm open to any suggestions.

The included music video is where the puppy got her name.

A bunch more stuff took place this morning but right now

I too, along with Mr WeeNee BeeNee The Giant Pig Man

need a long over due nap. - Catch y'all on the rebound ;-)

Hyper-vigilance is all about active situational awareness. It gives rise to epinephrine, also referred to as adrenaline rush. I have found street photography very similar to being a cop on patrol...situational awareness and detail orientation.

Voigtländer Nokton VM 21mm f/1.4 ASPH + Fujifilm X-T2 GS.

Author Peter Levine pioneered trauma therapy with his discovery that trauma is physiological in the human body. Humans react to trauma at a very basic reptile brain level releasing chemicals into the body to fight off the attack. The resulting adrenaline doesn't go away until the muscle memory is released. In studying animals in the wild such release is expressed in the form of shivering or shaking following a life threatening attack. If that shaking does not happen the animal cannot assume its resting state and will likely die. The built up adrenaline energy created by the attack must be released. The body must be able to run away, it must go through the actual physical motions in order to complete the cycle.

In humans not only does the body have to go through this release, but the mind with all its complexity of emotion, memory and spirit, must find a path to recovery. Often people shut down and avoid facing their fears and memories of the event. The work of the trauma therapist is to help the patient regain sensory sensations that can then be used to create a path to healing, a sensate road away from the scene of trauma and towards a scene of triumph and recovery. Just as young animals learn from experience to play out their escape strategy until they gain confidence that they will be able to face another attack.

He tells some fascinating anecdotes about people who keep recreating the event in other circumstances whether though another very similar accident or a substitution event that creates the same feelings. it explains a lot about why people hold onto the same behavior patterns that harmed them the first time around. Various accidents, relationships and circumstances.

The therapy he developed involved helping the patient to get in touch with sensations surrounding the trauma that can then be used to knit together a new scene in which the human organism survives and can carry on. Trauma therapist also use somatic therapy to help release the muscle memory and gel the patient get in touch with their feelings.

He also talks about memory being a very fluid and plastic phenomena with no established location in the brain. He discusses how traditional therapy fails because it is intent on excavating the original facts as if the truth would set you free. When in fact the healing path lies in acts of imagination. Recreating the scene with a happy ending. What he calls a renegotiation. Seen through this lens explains a lot about why I pick certain verbal fights and intellectual discussions since all the early attacks on my life were through verbal attacks on my country, my homosexuality, my foreign habits and anti-capitalist perspective. I spent my life studying up so I could win these sort of discussions.

At the end of the book he talks about societal trauma and the never ending cycle of war and revenge. And a new technique that has been developed to help people who were once enemies reconnect through mothers and their babies participating in rocking exercise together. He also mentions the phenomena of trauma repeating itself through another generation in the same family.

This was a very helpful book that shed a different light on human behavior in terms of how certain behavior patterns are a result of past trauma as the body attempts to cope with and heal this trauma. It helped me to better understand anxiety and hyper vigilance that is a result of certain traumatic experience. It also made me think of times in my life that were traumatic and how those events might have impacted the choices I made later in my life. An obsession with suitcases, never wanting to buy a house, being prepared to move at all times. An identification with refugees.

The Martyrdom of the Postmodern Soul

Theme: Maid of Orléans - Gregorian

www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtu2h-BROHQ

Regrets? You may ask if I have any. Sure I do. Are any relevant? Not any more. They are memories of a past. Haunting, though they may be, they are just memories. But memories mean they hold on to something. But what?

I suppose it depends on the memory. Good, bad, or indifferent. These are just classifications we make. Whether a good memory is really 'good', a bad one 'bad', or that grey area in between that we claim indifference to, it is often subject to our personal perceptions. But can an individual really know only and solely from himself what is the nature of his or her memories?

And thus is to the heart of this postmodern age - everyone seems to know what's wrong with the world, but no one really can tell what's right. Because everything is subjective to perceptions. And perceptions never lie, now do they?

Of course we lie to ourselves. It's part of the defense mechanisms of our mind. Unconscious psychological strategies brought into play by various entities to cope with reality and to maintain self-image. Healthy, 'sane' people are said to use many of them throughout their lifetime. But an ego defence mechanism can become pathological when its persistent use leads to maladaptive behavior to where the physical, and even mental health, of the individual is adversely affected. In other words, it's ok to lie to one's self, but as long as it's not done too often, apparently. But why do so?

The purpose of the Ego Defence Mechanisms is to protect the mind (self, ego, whatever you want to call that essence that makes up your persona) from anxiety, social sanctions or to provide a refuge from a situation with which one cannot currently cope. Ego, is also the base Latin word for 'I', or 'myself'. But yet, there is not one, but three aspects to the mind, to which Freud labels as the id, ego, and super ego. The id is the base, or 'chaos' of unorganized instinctual thought that wants instant gratification (the pleasure principle) Super ego is the idealistic conscience agent that is the most organised part of the personality structure that strives for perfection. And the ego winds up there in the middle as the mostly conscious and 'realistic' self that holds the defensive, perceptual, intellectual-cognitive, and executive functions all together.

When anxiety becomes too overwhelming, it is then the place of the ego to employ defence mechanisms to protect the individual. Feelings of guilt, embarrassment and shame often accompany the feeling of anxiety. And so come various defenses that may be used by the ego to try deal with the tensions between the two, still trying to act in its usual place as the middle man, the mediator.

Primitive of these defense mechanisms are considered borderline. They come about when one cannot integrate positive and negative mental objects together. From them, the others are built upon, whether by actual, natural construct, or made to fit into the theories due to phycological observations. Either way, the base, or borderline mechanisms are generally considered to be these: projection, denial, dissociation or splitting, devaluation, and projective identification.

Pathological defenses are also considered the psychotic defences. They can be found in dreams and throughout childhood. What should be noted of these types of mechanisms is that those using them frequently appear irrational or insane to others. In conjunction, they effectively rearrange external experiences to eliminate the need to cope with reality. And I think that is important to consider, since definition of 'insanity' and 'irrationality' connotates in many ways among any given individual. And when reality is subjective, as in the postmodern mind set, how does one effectively come to the ideal of what is rational and irrational? But yet, the structures set up by previous generations had observed these aspects to have to do with what is pathological:

Delusional Projection: Overly, or crudely direct, unreserved and straightforward delusions about external reality, to which commonly in nature pursues or persecutes with harassing or oppressive treatment.

Denial: The refusal to accept external reality because it is too threatening. Often, one in denial argues against what makes them anxious by stating it doesn't exist. The hope is that resolution of emotional conflict and reduction of anxiety will come by refusing to perceive or consciously acknowledge the more unpleasant aspects of external reality.

Distortion: Distortion comes off as sincere, but is an extremely obvious reshaping of external reality to meet internal needs.

Splitting: Negative and positive impulses are split off and do not organize or combine them together as parts of a whole. In other words, one who uses splitting as a defense mechanism looks at other people as either all good or all evil, rather than seeing the person as a whole individual with both positive and negative features.

Extreme projection: The blatant denial of a moral or psychological deficiency is part of an extreme projection. The other aspect is that one using this mechanism perceives, or projects a deficiency into another individual or group. It would be like blaming society or the economic crisis for why one is poor and cannot get a job, and furthermore why one turned to robbing banks, because it's the bankers' fault that society is in trouble, and thus reason for resorting to robbery.

The second level of defenses could be called the teen defenses. Though they are common in adults, they are generally distinguished as part of the adolescent's experiences, and the occurrence of all of these defences during the teenage years is considered normal. The reasons that these defenses are used is to lessen distress and anxiety provoked by threatening individuals or when confronted with uncomfortable realities. Excessive use of such defences is seen as socially undesirable because they are immature, such individuals are hard to deal with, and are found to be seriously out of touch with reality. Because they are considered immature, they have been coined the Immature defenses.

Acting out: Direct expression of an unconscious wish or impulse in action, without conscious awareness of the emotion that drives that expressive behavior.

Fantasy: Tendency to retreat into fantasy in order to resolve inner and outer conflicts.

Idealization: Unconsciously choosing to perceive another individual as having more positive qualities than he or she may actually have.

Passive aggression: Aggression towards others expressed indirectly or passively.

Projection: This is considered a primitive form of paranoia. It reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the undesirable impulses or desires without becoming consciously aware of them. The person's own unwanted thoughts and emotions are attributed to another. In doing so severe prejudice and jealousy. Hyper vigilance is put upon external danger, and forms all these attributed aspects as a form of "injustice collecting". In other words, blame is shifted so that one's unacceptable thoughts, feelings and impulses within oneself becomes those of someone else.

Projective identification: In the defense, the object of projection invokes in the individual person the exact thoughts, feelings or behaviors that are being projected.

Somatization: The transformation of negative feelings towards others into negative feelings toward self, such as pain, illness, and anxiety.

Also fairly common in adults are the third level of defense mechanisms called the neurotic defenses. Though they are considered short-term advantages in coping, they often cause long-term problems in relationships, work and in enjoying life when used as one's primary style of coping with the world.

Displacement: This mechanism shifts sexual or aggressive impulses to a more acceptable, or at least less threatening target. That is, the emotion is redirected to a safer outlet, separating the emotion from its real object transferring the intense emotion toward someone or something that is less offensive or threatening in order to avoid dealing directly with what is frightening or threatening. In other words, 'taking it out on someone else.'

Dissociation: To avoid emotional distress, a person may make temporary drastic modifications of one's personal identity or character to avoid emotional distress. In this defense mechanism, a separation or delay in the coming out of a feeling that normally would accompany a situation or thought happens. It would be like a person getting news of a loved one dying, but, for some reason, they compose themselves to look unphased about the news, though, in private, at a later period in time, the anguish may come out.

Hypochondriasis: An excessive preoccupation or worry about having a serious illness.

Intellectualization: A form of isolation. This mechanism concentrates on the intellectual components of a situation in order to try and distance oneself from the emotions that could bring about anxiety. Essentially an individual will use this mechanism to avoid unacceptable emotions by focusing on the intellectual aspects. Similar to this are the concepts of rationalization, use of ritual, undoing, compensation, and use of magical thinking.

Isolation: In the general, isolation is termed as the separation of feelings from ideas and events.

Rationalization: When a person tries to rationalize, he tries to convince himself that no wrong was done. To try to convince, the mechanism uses false reasoning to excuse himself. And so, rationalization is also commonly called making excuses.

Reaction formation: To try and convert an unconscious impulse percieved to be dangerous into its opposite is what is employed in the reaction formation defense mechanism. When this is done, an individual may behave in a way that is completely the opposite of what one really wants or feels. A person may take the opposite belief because the true belief causes anxiety. This defence can work effectively for coping in the short term, but will eventually break down.

Regression: Temporary reversion of the ego to an earlier stage of development rather than handling unacceptable impulses in a more adult way.

Repression: The process of attempting to force back desires towards pleasurable instincts, caused by a threat of suffering if the desire is satisfied is considere repression. The desire is moved to the unconscious in an attempt to prevent it from entering consciousness. Seemingly unexplainable naivety, memory lapse or lack of awareness of one's own situation and condition are common aspects of this defense mechanism. However, the emotion is conscious, even though the idea behind it is absent.

Undoing: A person tries to 'undo' an unhealthy, destructive or otherwise threatening thought by engaging in contrary behaviour.

Considered to be commonly found among emotionally healthy adults are the fourth level, or mature defense mechanisms. Many of these mechanisms have their origins in immature stages of development and have been adapted through the years in order to make as effective or useful as possible to bring about success in life and relationships. Use of these defences is said to bring pleasure and feelings of control toward a greater value and higher degree, helping integrate conflicting emotions and thoughts while still remaining effective. Those who use these mechanisms are usually considered virtuous.

Altruism: Service to others that helps improve others and brings pleasure and personal satisfaction.

Anticipation: Realistic planning for future discomfort.

Humour: Non-concealed, or open expression of ideas and feelings, particularly that which is unpleasant to focus on or too terrible to talk about, in a way that gives pleasure to others. Humor, can be considered the exploration of the absurdity inherent in any event, and enables someone to call it like it is.

Identification: Also considered modeling, or even imitation. It is the unconscious observation of one's self upon another person's character and behavior.

Introjection: Identifying with some idea or object so deeply that it becomes a part of that person.

Sublimation: Transformation of negative emotions or instincts into positive actions, behavior, or emotion.

Thought suppression: The conscious process of pushing thoughts into the preconscious. It is a conscious decision to delay paying attention to an emotion or need in order to cope with a present reality. When this is done, it makes it possible to later access uncomfortable or distressing emotions while accepting them.

Despite all these levels and classifications, all that is really being said is that we lie to ourselfves all the time. Either that, or we find ways to work around things that we either don't like, or society, or other pressures, even those in our innermost being - our conscience - tells us is wrong. Some, because the id is associated with instinct, will call the baser, unorganized parts of our persona our animal aspect. And it is that vulgar area that we commonly have distaste for because it urges us on, and often to do things that may not be in our best benefit, or, at the very least, is not something that is good at the moment the urge comes about. Some urges are just blatantly wrong or reprehensible. But they are there. And they are things that our 'higher being' tries to counter. And in the middle, there's that persona that tries to interpret it all in a realistic, logical manner, and negotiate between the extremes of both what is right and wrong. Or, at the very least, what seems more beneficial and will have the least adverse effects on one's self overall.

But, in the postmodern world, where all these things are so subjective, and what's good for one person, isn't necessarily good for another, how do we attain something objectively good? Is there no such thing as an altruism?

It is said, in animal behaviour, that an altruism is when an animal may do something to its disadvantage but that benefits others of its kind, such as give a warning cry that reveals the location of the caller to a predator. In various religions and societies, we have had names for these sorts of persons as prophets, philosophers, heralds, and saints due to martyrdom. Martyrdom itself is a form of prophecy and heraldry by which one professes, calls out, and bears witness - to be that altruistic 'animal' that calls out among the predators to give a warning. But yet, who calls out to this postmodern age? What do they tell us that we can know is true? And how can we tell among all the other voices that compete and complain that they too hold truth who is telling any objective truth, and who is just simply crying wolf?

Does US insecurity put liberty at risk?

By Kambiz Fattahi

BBC News, Washington

The BBC Persian Service's Kambiz Fattahi recounts his own experience of being singled out on the basis of his appearance and asks whether fears of terrorism are undermining America's traditional values.

People often ask if I have ever experienced prejudice in the US because of my Iranian background.

Up to now, I have always replied in the negative.

The last place I ever expected to encounter ignorance and apparent discrimination was at my university, a place renowned for international studies.

But last week, at Georgetown University's graduation ceremony, I found myself in shock and awe.

In awe at the inspiring keynote speech about America's tradition of freedom made by Harvard historian Dr Bernard Bailyn.

In shock at one particular display of America's post-9/11 insecurities and hyper-vigilance.

Back to reality

The university is located in the well-to-do Georgetown neighbourhood of Washington DC.

It was disturbing to think that nothing more than my Middle Eastern appearance had aroused someone's suspicion

I was there to support a graduating classmate. Sitting in the front row among proud parents, family and friends of graduating students, I was captivated by the speaker's words.

"Nations and people do have dominant characteristics, and it's a good time, a necessary time, to think briefly about our own essential characteristics. What others think about us, how we see ourselves, and how we actually are, matters."

But, the sense of awe did not last long. Two portly university security guards brought me back to reality.

"Please come with us," one of them ordered. He caught me off guard. When I asked why, he told me, "You're making some people here nervous."

It was disturbing to think that nothing more than my Middle Eastern appearance had aroused someone's suspicion. More shocking was the blunt inquiry of one of the guards about my national origin.

I told him I was a US citizen. After showing forms of identification, including my card from the BBC Persian Service, he commented: "So, you're from Persia. Aren't Babylon and the Tigris River in Persia?"

Officials at Georgetown say they have strict policies prohibiting racial and ethnic profiling, and have begun an investigation into the matter.

"Pluralism in Action"

This prominent university boasts on its website of a student body representing over 130 countries, and requires its first-year students to complete a "Pluralism in Action" programme even before beginning their studies.

Given this, the guard's cultural insensitivity took me by surprise. But observers note that this kind of singling out has become pervasive in the US since the terror attacks of 9/11.

A quarter of Muslim Americans say that, in the past year, "people have acted as if they were suspicious" of them, according to a new Pew Research Center study.

But, as my case demonstrates, this phenomenon is by no means limited to the Muslim community.

"People who are perceived to be Muslims, that are Middle Eastern, are being disparately treated," says Arsalan Iftikhar, the legal director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

"A Sikh, who is not a Muslim, gets attacked and gets told, 'terrorist go home'."

Arshiyar Ali Shirazi, a Christian Iranian-American who has lived in the US since the age of two, recognises this trend.

Most people see names like Ali, Mohammad, Abdul, Reza and automatically associate them with the Middle East and terrorism

Arshiyar Ali Shirazi

Having graduated from university and dreaming of landing a job with the government, he goes by a more "American" name, Al.

"I figured since the 'from' line in a recruiter's inbox is the first thing they see from you, why risk associating a strong resume and solid qualifications with a Middle Eastern-sounding name?

"Most people see names like Ali, Mohammad, Abdul, Reza and automatically associate them with the Middle East and terrorism."

The guards at Georgetown eventually let me go, too late to see my friend walk across the stage to collect her degree.

As I left the building - which nine months earlier had housed the Pluralism in Action programme - Georgetown's President John J DeGioia's remarks to the graduating class resonated in my head.

"You will face challenges - and enjoy opportunities - that previous generations of citizens and leaders, scientists and scholars could not even have imagined."

Apparently, one of these challenges will be how America can address its insecurities, compounded by 9/11 and the immigration debate, all the while preserving its ideals of "liberty and justice for all".

We visited the 黄崖关 (Huángyáguān- Yellow Cliff Pass) section of the Great Wall that straddles the boundary of 河北 (Héběi) Province and 天津 (Tiānjīn) Province.

This was our first driving excursion outside of Beijing Province, and it was a pleasant surprise. All but the final 25 kilometres of 120 kilometre trip to Wall were on the lightly travelled and brand new 京平高速公路 (Jīngpíng Gāosùgōnglù - Jingping Expressway)

Because the traffic was so light and there were few yahoos on the road, I could dial my hyper vigilance down a notch and enjoy the sight of the mountains and pretty harvest-ready farmland.

From time to time I felt like I was driving on Highway 401 or 417 back home, but the feeling would quickly pass. After all, the 401, 417, and just about any other highway you can name, are in terrible shape. They're nowhere near as good as the Jingping.

The photo shows where we utlimately parked our car, at the ground-level entrance to the Huángyáguān section of the Great Wall. But we didn't enter the Wall here. We took a shuttle bus to the upper mountain entrance to the Huángyáguān Wall with the intention of walking back to the lower entrance and our car.

Looking at the terrain, we figured the trip would be easy, because it should be mostly downhill.

The ornate head plumes tell us this is a mature adult, one of dozens that return to Stanley Park's heron colony every year. There they renovate approx 2 dozen nests, mate and raise their young. Oh, and studiously ignore the many ducks hanging around ....

I would like to share some important words from Journalist, Ahmed Eldin, “Gaza’s children have been exposed to so much war, oppression and trauma it is hard to describe how pervasive mental stress and trauma is. The constant threat of airstrikes, shelling, and displacement has lasting psychological effects that causes dysfunction on the individual and societal level. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is an obscenely common psychological issue among Gaza’s children. Witnessing and experiencing murder, violence and loss perpetually leads to symptoms such as nightmares, anxiety, and hyper-vigilance. With Israel bombing hospitals, murdering paramedics and preventing any food, medicine or good into the strip, Gaza struggles to provide adequate mental health support for its children. The education system in Gaza is often disrupted due to Israel’s siege and relentless attacks. This can lead to a lack of routine and socialization, which are important for children’s mental health and development. Despite the seemingly insurmountable and clearly unjust challenges, many children in Gaza show remarkable resilience. They have developed coping mechanisms to deal with adversity, but the long-term effects of prolonged conflict are undoubtedly still profound. Almost half of Gaza’s population are children.” @ahmedeldin

Muir Woods, CA. With age comes the irrepressible urge to grab everything and put it in one's mouth. Out of dozens of shots, this was nearly the only one where she wasn't blurry, head down, grasping at pine needles and sticks.

It seems like she's been ready to crawl for weeks, but she hasn't figured it out yet. Instead, she seems more focused on figuring out how to stand. She prefers to be on hands and feet than hands and knees, and just this week has managed to push herself up onto the poof so she's semi-standing. Last night she used her papa's legs to push herself up and then, I kid you not, stood up and let go (and of course immediately fell backwards). Jake and I looked at each other like, "Did she just stand for a half a second?" I see the future and I'm pretty sure it's going to involve hyper-vigilance!

This multi-faceted face depicts life as a person with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). There are 8 sections representing 9 personalities or 'alters.'

Each segment displays something about that particular personality. Together, they make a whole, as shown by there being one face in the outline.

There is only one eye, but it is in every section. That's because everyone was always watching out, on guard, viewing their surroundings, the situation, etc. There is no mouth because in many mental health hospitalizations I was forbidden to talk about the alters and they were forbidden to speak or appear. If those things happened I was restricted to my room or moved to a 'quiet room'- a polite name for locked, padded cell.

One ear is blocked shut- to block out certain sounds in memory. The other was always listening for the smallest sound, every word, part of the hyper-vigilance that I experience yet today.

There is no nose because odors and certain fragrances, along with sound, needed to be blocked.

All of these 'parts' were one person- me. Each had specific talents, characteristics, strengths and challenges, all of which were in the personality of the individual or 'Host.' That personality just happened to be fragmented into separate and distinct parts, with each part (alter) coming out at specific times to handle specific events. Dissociative Identity Disorder has long been a controversial diagnosis. Even among Mental Health Care Providers there remains contention about the origin, validity, cause and effect of the disorder.

After many years of misdiagnosis, mental health ward stays, and inpatient treatment centers I was fortunate to find a therapist who believed in me. Together with a core group of amazingly patient, accepting and supportive friends, she helped me move from survival to existence and, finally, back to living. It took decades but I eventually resumed my life as a self supporting, employed person who contributes to society, has friends, and is glad to be alive. The alters, who I once considered my enemies, became my friends and allies, then in time melded together to become the individual I am today.

I consider myself living proof that DID does exist and that multiple personalities can be created within a person. I also consider myself to be living proof that mental illness can be treated and in many cases managed or resolved with proper treatment and time. Life can go on- and it can be well worth the effort. I know mine is.

I got yelled at by a security guard for taking this picture which (despite the reflection) is essentially looking out a window. Hyper-vigilance abounds. I mean really, I can see that they don't want you taking pictures of the art, but pictures of the building itself?
