It 's quite a challenge to follow the action of the lions at the Chinese New Year parade tonight. They just didn't seem to stay very still. So I set my Fuji camera to EXR mode and then went spray and pray. In Fuji I trust.

Good morning everyone and Happy Feathery Friday. Been a long time coming, but I finally got enough decent pics of Red-breasted Nuthatches (Sitta canadensis) to put this series together. Been a challenging bird to photograph since it's so small and very hyper. Rarely does it sit still for long.
Normally this is an uncommon bird here locally and I'm lucky to see maybe one or two in any given year. But in 2012 a big irruption occurred and I've seen as many as four at one time fluttering about the yard this winter. The best way to describe an irruption is the movement of birds made in response to changes in food availability, habitat, or weather. These movements are not termed as a "true migration" because they are irregular or unscheduled. While I explain in more detail about the Red-breasted Nuthatch irruption in particular in the comment section under the second to last photo, in a nutshell the circumstances that lead to it are a combination of a good breeding season followed by a food source failure. As a result, large numbers of Red-breasted Nuthatches moved far beyond their normal range in 2012.
