The Richmond Dairy Apartments is a Tudor-Revival, fortress-like former manufacturing structure into which three, 40 foot masonry milk bottles have been inserted at strategic exterior building corners.
The Richmond Dairy Co. was founded in 1890 by three Richmond businessmen, A. R. Scott, J. O. Scott, and T. L. Blanton. By 1913 they had engaged the prominent local architecture firm of Carneal & Johnston to design a modern diary facing North Jefferson Street. Client and architect used the strong, vertical form of milk bottles to project the message that sterilized glass milk bottles could guarantee freshness compared to less hygienic milk tins.
Although the company, which produced Dolly Madison ice cream here, had some 389 employees in 1954, it ceased operations in 1970. The empty building fell into disrepair.
By 1990 work began on what would be a challenging transformation from dairy to apartment complex.

International Vulture Awareness Day - 4th September 2021
In a survey conducted by BirdLife International, 75% of people think of vultures as dirty undertakers – the thought that they circle helpless prey a common theme.
Conversely, these cautious creatures are themselves the ones that are helpless to the threat of human persecution.
Vultures are affectionately known by nature-lovers worldwide as ‘Nature’s Clean-up Crew’. They clean our landscapes like no other - nature's most successful scavengers. And they do all this for free.
They are in reality fantastically hygienic, caring parents, and quite shy characters.
Nature's very own biological recycling team, vultures play a vital role in clearing away carcasses and are likely to help limit disease transmission at carcasses.
Without their heroics, these diseases contaminate water sources, creating a knock-on effect that threatens both ours and our animal compatriot’s lives.
How would your local environment look (and smell) if the garbage-disposal team disappeared?
Also, an African safari tour would not be quite the same with hundreds of unconsumed carcasses around.

Italian/Carniolan Hybrid Bees bred for hygienic characteristics.(less varroa mites). This is 1 of 20 that stayed in the house. Good thing the wife is out of town! This is it for bees this year, now the colonies can grow. A package of bees is like a puppy, it's small and as you care and feed it you can watch the colony grow!

When I found out the Hygienic Dress League painted a mural on a barn up in the Thumb (part of Michigan - look at a map, you'll figure it out), I put it on "the list". Pam and I worked it into our lighthouse trip last week.

While it’s a practical and understandable habit, many hotels discourage it for aesthetic reasons .
The practice of Indian men and women (or travelers from India more generally) hanging clothes in hotel balconies is largely cultural and practical, not unusual when you understand the context.
1. Habit from Home
In many Indian households, clothes are washed at home and dried in open spaces like balconies or rooftops. This habit carries over when traveling — especially for those used to washing undergarments or a few daily-wear clothes by hand.
2. Saving on Laundry Costs
Hotel laundry services can be expensive, especially in international or upscale hotels. Many Indian travelers — especially those traveling on a budget or with families — prefer to wash and dry small items themselves to avoid extra charges.
3. Longer Trips, Practicality
Indian tourists often travel for extended periods, sometimes over several weeks across multiple destinations. Washing some clothes along the way helps manage packing light and staying fresh without relying entirely on hotel services.

In many countries (especially tropical or Mediterranean ones), hotel balconies provide excellent natural sunlight and ventilation — ideal for drying clothes quickly and efficiently.
5. Cultural Norms and Comfort
In India, air-drying clothes (rather than using dryers) is the norm. It’s seen as hygienic, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective. Travelers often feel more comfortable continuing this routine while abroad.

On my leisurely walk through the old academic quarter of Groningen, I passed by the building erected in 1883 for the Laboratory of Hygienics once part of the pharmaceutical-medical department. It was built in 1883 and the main doorway boasts this rendition of the goddess of cleanliness and purity, Hygeia. The sculpture is by Emilius A.H. Bourgonjon (1841-1927), a Belgian who worked in The Netherlands.
The inset is of a wonderful Widow's Thrill, a Kalanchoè, that I saw in a shop more or less around the corner. Its whiteness symbol of purity. It's well known that astronauts and cosmonauts are subjected to dire hygienic norms on their flights. And, too, that those stays in far-off space can make one homesick. In 1979 Valery Ryumin (1939-) and Vladimir Lyakov (1941-2018) spent a long time in Salyut 6. Space loneliness weighed heavily on them, and to pick up their spirits a shipment of supplies from Earth also had a Kalanchoè plant. They were so thrilled by it that they named it 'Tree of Life'.

A folder, in English, describing the International Hygienic Exhibition that was held in Dresden, Germany, between May and September of that year. The city had been host to the first such exhibition in 1911 and this had led to the foundation of the German Hygienic Museum in 1912.
