They are distinguished from true owls by their faces, long, lower-positioned beaks, and smaller eyes.
It was forecast to be overcast, drizzly and dull, perfect I thought, what I got was partly cloudy, blue skies and bright, shit! However, overshadowed by trees and still with significant snow was this destroyed hunting tower, I was thrilled to see it collapsed, at least there the local deer can roam without the fear of the coward's gun.
I hope everyone is well and so as always, thank you! :)
The full moon in October, 2024 was a supermoon, named Hunter's Moon. It was full Thursday, October 17 in the early morning. I shot this image the night before full. The moon's phase here was waxing gibbous at 99% full.

This beautiful young male landed just in front of me while I was waiting silently for some action. I had time to take a few good shots.
Ce jeune Martin-pêcheur mâle s'est posé sur ce vieux tronc tout juste devant moi alors que j'attendais patiemment de l'action. J'ai eu le temps de prendre quelques prises avant qu'il ne quitte en constatant ma présence.
The black heron (Egretta ardesiaca) also known as the black egret, is an African heron. It is well known for its habit of using its wings to form a canopy when fishing.
The black heron has an interesting hunting method called canopy feeding - it uses its wings like an umbrella, and uses the shade it creates to attract fish. This technique was well documented in episode 5 of the BBC's "The Life of Birds". Some have been observed feeding in solitary, while others feed in groups of up to 50 individuals, 200 being the highest number reported. The black heron feeds by day but especially prefers the time around sunset. It roosts communally at night, and coastal flocks roost at high tide. The primary food of the black heron is small fish, but it will also eat aquatic insects, crustaceans and amphibians.
This lovely Black Heron was captured during a photography safari on a late evening boat ride on Lake Baringo, Kenya.
Hunter's Sty Bridge is in Westerdale,North Yorkshire. Restored in 1874, it is believed to date from at least the 14th century when a community of Knights Templars held land nearby.

I went out into the backyard for a few minutes at lunchtime today, and found two Green Jumping Spiders almost immediately. This was the second, and it had recently had a successful hunt and was sitting with its overturned prey (a leafhopper of some sort).
This Red Fox has become a regular visitor to our neighbourhood. I first noticed it intently eyeing several squirrels getting treats from the next door sundeck. It was interesting to see it in attack mode. Unfortunately by the time I grabbed the camera I only got a parting shot. No squirrels today!

One of only a few cheetah I have encountered in the Reserve over the years, and for me the most satisfying one. It was early morning and the light was beautiful, so also the natural surroundings. I have already posted two versions but I think my editing skills have changed somewhat over the years. I hope for the better:-)

It seemed like the perfect spot to see a bear or moose, however not that day. This is looking upstream. The creek flows out of the mountains in Chugach State Park from the Hunter Creek Glacier to the Knik River.
The rising of the full Moon of October, the Hunter's Moon, in 2021. Taken from home in southern Alberta. Clouds thwarted plans to travel elsewhere but as it turned out the Moon rose into a clear band allowing a last-minute shoot from home.
This is a 4-exposure blend to take in the dark ground without overexposing the Moon, with the 200mm lens at f/11 on the Canon Ra camera at ISO 400. Blended with ADP Pro luminosity masks. A mild Orton Glow added with Luminar AI.
