Elephant Island: Survival Story of Ernest Shackleton and the Crew of HMS Endurance

When British explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew of HMS Endurance lost their ship to crushing pack ice in the Weddell Sea in 1915, their probability of survival was low. The 28 men spent months drifting on ice floes and traversing the Southern Ocean in small lifeboats until they finally spotted land. The hunk of rock and ice was not the welcoming refuge they hoped for, but it was enough. Elephant Island with its few penguins is located about 150 miles northeast of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The team set up camp, naming the site Point Wild on April 1916. Shackleton and five mates took a lifeboat to look for help, leaving one member Wild in charge. The remaining crew built makeshift huts by resting their two remaining lifeboats upside down on rocks. To combat the perpetual darkness, they made lamps out of sardine tins, used surgical bandages for wicks, and burned seal blubber oil. Four and a half months later, Shackleton and crew returned with a ship and rescued all 22 men. At Point Wild, a monument of several plaques and a bust of Wild was erected to honor the crew and their experience on the island. From: scitechdaily.com/elephant-island-where-ernest-shackleton-...

Yes, for f**ks sake, I quoted the great sage Justin Bieber lol

There is a place

Where I can go

When I feel low

When I feel blue

And it's my mind

And there's no time when I'm alone

I think of you

And things you do

Go 'round my head

The things you said

Like "I love only you"

Being quite ill with the man flu for the past couple of weeks, I really haven't had much incentive to pick up a camera. Between that and having quite a bit on the go in the next couple of months, my activity on Flickr will be more limited.

In the mean time, this is an image from April of a few years ago, when the weather (aside from the snow) was very much like it is today, very wet, overcast, and grey. A day for ducks while we hunker down inside with our archives.

All of us should be hunkering down and sheltering in place like these ladies to better keep us all safe and cared for.

While walking down the street one day, I came across this critter.

Odd looking sort who was obviously indicating it would like company.

But, like Little Red Riding Hood, I thought 'what a big mouth you have', so I just took its picture and moved on.

A fresh female Small Blue (Cupido minimus) hides from the weather on a mostly dull afternoon at Pleasley Pit Country Park in east Derbyshire. There were occasional short gaps in the stubborn cloud but she was reluctant to move far from this protected spot in the Hawthorn.

There were a couple of freshers on site but most of the now low numbers were getting tatty. The impression so far is that this year's first emergence is much smaller than last year and that it will be a discete event from any second brood. Last year there were Small Blues present on all visits in May, June, July and August.

How often does a girl get her photo taken with Keanu Reeves, right?

Not sure if this photo did him justice, because he is hot AF!

@Zirca with Nelson Lee, Mister Singapore 2009. Nelson is actually much taller. Us girls were on a step platform and he was on the step below us, making him look much shorter than he is in this photo.

In the earliest days of America's involvement in World War II, there was no greater induction inducement for younger guys planning to enlist,or waiting to be drafted, than to pick-up a national magazine, or see in a newsreel at the local "Bijou", their favorite actor, Movie Star, or anyone of prominence at the time, joining the military ranks. It was a period of unparalleled "Patriotism", and probably rightfully.

Here a cameraman of the time has captured Tyrone Power getting his induction shots as he joins the Marines. For any number of young men this had to be a great incentive,as well as inspiration, to join-up!
