Topiary at Levens Hall, South Lakeland, Cumbria.
Levens Hall is a Manor House dating back to around 1350, though much is Elizabethan.
Levens has a celebrated and large Topiary Garden, created in 1689-1712 by the French gardener Guillaume Beaumont. He was the gardener of King James II and the designer of the grounds at Hampton Court.
After over 300 years, these gardens have survived remarkably intact. Levens Hall Topiary Garden is the world's finest, oldest and most extensive example, as confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records.
Topiary is an ancient art with Roman origins (Topiarius). It involves precision-trimming trees into strange and beautiful shapes. These living sculptures use slow-growing and long-living Golden Yew and Box trees. It takes months to trim!
These two trees look like alien invaders, just two of hundreds of examples in this inspirational garden.
World Topiary Day is 12 May every year.

Figure montante de l’art urbain, Levalet a investi la rue par l’installation de personnages à échelle humaine
au langage corporel expressif .
Cinéma, mime, théâtre d’improvisation nourrissent son travail pour donner naissance à une compagnie de
comédiens qui interagit avec le passant. Cette démarche illusionniste est un jeu de rôles qui semble croqué
sur le vif, de préférence à l’encre sur papier.
Collés ensuite dans la rue, les dessins de Levalet interpellent par leur trait caractéristique, leur décalage,
leur poésie, leur imagination et la pertinence d’un contexte toujours choisi avec soin.
Chaque installation raconte ainsi une histoire habile entre humour et questionnement et transforme
l’espace public en scènes inattendues aux sens multiples.
