A visit to the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Peruigia.
From the third floor upwards.
Mostly crucifixion crosses and other Christian religious art not to my taste.

After getting our tickets, we had to put our large bags in a locker.
The Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria (English: National Gallery of Umbria) the Italian national paintings collection of Umbria, housed in the Palazzo dei Priori, Perugia, in central Italy. Located on the upper floors of the Palazzo dei Priori, the exhibition spaces occupy two floors and the collection comprises the greatest representation of the Umbrian School of painting, ranging from the 13th to the 19th century, strongest in the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries. The collection is presented in 40 exhibition rooms in the Palazzo. On the second floor of the Gallery, there is an exhibition space for temporary collections, changed several times a year.
The collection's origins lie in the foundation of the Perugian Accademia del Disegno in the mid-16th century. The Academy was originally based in the Convento degli Olivetani at Montemorcino, where it began to assemble a collection of paintings and drawings. The town became part of the French department of Trasimène in 1798 and its religious houses were suppressed. This suppression was repeated by the united Kingdom of Italy from the 1860s onwards - both suppressions shifted a large number of paintings and artworks from church to state ownership.
In 1863, the civic paintings collection was formally named after Pietro Vannucci, but the problem of establishing an appropriate site to house the collection was not solved until 1878, when it moved into the third floor of the Palazzo dei Priori in the town centre. With the addition of acquisitions, donations and bequests, the pinacoteca became the Regia Galleria Vannucci in 1918, under the patronage of the king. The name was later changed to Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria. Over the years the entire complex of Palazzo dei Priori has been repeatedly affected by renovations and functional adaptation. The museum path, inaugurated in its current form in 2006, occupies an area of 4000 square meters on two floors.

WE ARE ALL
Sinds de Brexit mag Europa dan wankelen, Phronesis zet daar een prachtig staaltje van continentale eenheid tegenover. De Deense contrabassist Jasper Høiby, de Britse pianist Ivo Neame en de Zweedse drummer Anton Eger bouwden samen aan een band die vooruitstrevende akoestische muziek maakt die helder en simpel klinkt, ondanks dat ze heel ingenieus in elkaar zit. Ze doen dat vanuit Londen, waar de band ruim tien jaar geleden ontstond uit het Loop Collective, een platform voor gelijkgestemde jonge jazzmusici.
Phronesis maakt internationaal furore met aanstekelijke thema’s, krachtige composities en prikkelende grooves. De composities bevatten veel ritmische lagen en ostinato-patronen. Hoiby zorgt samen met Eger voor een strakke, aanhoudende pulsering zodat de muziek wordt voortgestuwd. Eger is een vindingrijk slagwerker die stevig kan improviseren, allerlei ritmes aankan – ook uit de hiphopcultuur – en verrassende klappen uitdeelt. Ivo Neame tenslotte houdt van raadselachtige passages, maar laat ook graag zijn Herbie Hancock-achtige wendingen horen.
Phronesis’ album Alive (2010) werd door toonaangevende jazzmagazines uitgeroepen tot album van het jaar. In september 2018 bracht het trio zijn zevende album We Are All uit, wederom op Edition Records. Deze prachtige muziek komen ze vanavond in LantarenVenster presenteren. Voor de liefhebbers van inspirerende, creatieve jazz absoluut een mustsee!

Jacques Tocatlian, was a man of many talents.
He was a devoted family man who lived on three continents and always provided for his family. He was a diplomat who carried his work with devotion and conviction, with competence and success. He was a builder who laid the foundation for the revival of the Library of Alexandria. He was a writer who looked at the world with humor and tolerance.
Jacques was also a painter who wasn’t bound by borders, defined by labels, or frightened of critics. He painted in a variety of styles. His work was good enough to win a first prize but sometimes went unappreciated. It was experimental. It was mostly happy. It was sometimes unfinished. It captured moments and places he cared to remember and share with others.
When Jacques passed away on January 24, 2019, we assembled in his room close to 200 paintings that he had painted over the course of a half century. Many of these painting had been stored in the basement and seldom seen. Rediscovering his works was like Ali Baba discovering a cave full with treasures.
But unlike Ali Baba, the family decided to give away most of the paintings to friends and family. It was our way to share his legacy and for Jacques to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Below is a compilation of many of his works. Thank you to everyone that is displaying his paintings in your homes and offices. We know how much it means to Jacques.
