U 13 sati po hrvatskom vremenu globalna utrka Wings for Life World Run započinje na nekoliko desetaka lokacija diljem svijeta.

The opening event for Claiming Williams was a keynote presentation by Anthony Jack. Jack, a sociologist and Assistant Professor of Education at Harvard University, is transforming the way we address diversity and inclusion in education. His new book, The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges are Failing Disadvantaged Students, reframes the conversation surrounding poverty and higher education. In it, he explains the paths of two uniquely segregated groups. First, the “privileged poor”: students from low-income, diverse backgrounds who attended elite prep or boarding school before attending college. The second are what Jack calls the “doubly disadvantaged”—students who arrive from underprivileged backgrounds without prep or boarding school to soften their college transition.

Onstage left to right: Lise Grande, USIP; Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, US Army Retired; Ambassador Anne Patterson; Ambassador William Taylor, USIP; Ambassador Dawn Liberi

On May 5, USIP hosted a conversation with the working group’s co-chairs as they presented findings from the final report. The discussion examined how elite capture of security sectors abroad can undermine the effectiveness of U.S. security sector assistance and drive violence — and what policymakers can do to make security sector assistance more effective.

um, Elite? really? Elite Movers? Are you kidding me? How elite can you be when you are a glorified man with a van? What do you, wear white gloves or something?

It's that time of year in Texas. @_saranicole hand model and @lexxivictoria homecoming invite.

In the Meiji Period, Katsu Kaishū lived about a 5 minute walk from this place, but in the Edo Period, he had a residence here in Akasaka.

The current plot of land is home to a 3 story building that consists of one ground level shop and 8 apartments.

I haven't looked into this, but my gut instinct tells me his residence was the entire block (ie; it included the buildings to the left of this shot). This area wasn't this developed in the Edo Period and Meiji Period. It was very, very elite at that time.

You can tell it's on a hillside (yamanote) which speaks volumes about how elite the area used to be.

Follower of Anthonis Mor

Dutch, 1512/16 - c. 1576

c. 1560

Oil on oak

Purchased 1928 (no. 3569)

Mor, as portraitist to the Hapsburg court and as a favoured painter of the merchants, clerics and scholars of the Netherlands, helped form the elite's self-image. His portraits are both seemingly truthful and simultaneously ennobled - their careful, almost objective description balanced by a sense of grandeur. Self-consciously posed, the woman turns her head to confront us. For all the sense of character, the unknown sitter is very much a type: a dignified, virtuous woman, posed decorously, her gestures restrained, her dress sober but costly. It is both a portrait and the image of an ideal - the embodiment of how elite women were the act and wished to be perceived. Frans Pourbus the Elder (1545-1581) has been suggested as the artist.

Frame: Running moulding with carved and gilded ornament. Britain, late 17th - first half 18th century. Made for the work.

Nanjala Nyabola the Kenyan writer and political analyst, is currently a graduate student focusing on the socio-political dimensions of conflict in Africa has published an article on Aljazeera titled ‘International law isn't real' in which she states “Although there is a pseudo-consensus on what the law 'is', it is in fact simply a consensus among elites. It's one of the most common refrains you hear, especially in an American law school, as to why the US has no reason to abide by or participate in international conventions or nascent legal institutions like the international criminal court. The unspoken philosophical implications are: that there is such a thing as "real" law, and that domestic law has somehow achieved that gold standard. After almost two years of grasping the essence of this "realness", swimming upstream against the glib acceptance that Law is, I find myself concluding that there is no such thing as "real" law. Domestic law is no more real than international law and if we allow one, the empty comfort of ascribed "realness", we should be able to extend this comfort to the other. "Real" law is the necessary fiction that consequences must flow from the actions of one against each other, and that the Law as defined by those in power or with money, determines both the infraction and its consequences; yet another tool that those in power have to employ against the powerless. They are able to do this, because even at the most prestigious centres for legal learning and thought, few grapple the meta-question that underpins the entire exercise: namely, what is law? …The onus is on law schools and practitioners to think creatively about how elite consensus on this issue can be created. Ultimately, it comes down to two things: either change the minds of the elite, or change the elite. That is a call to anarchy.” Inspired by Nanjala Nyabola, Aljazeera ow.ly/iqTxa Image source The Guardian ow.ly/iqTmD
