Good Afternoon evening Flickr Friends. Well today didn't go exactly as planned. I was at my first birding location and was getting some decent shots. My cell rang and it was the young fella that took my old position. I have been mentoring him for a couple years and he said he needed to talk with me. As it turns out I was only about 400 yards from his office. So he came over to where I was. We had an excellent chat and he learned some more ins and out of being a Senior Manager in a bureaucracy. He is such a smart capable young man when you teach him he gets it right away but he is also a 30's something and patience is a virtue he has not quite mastered. Had to talk him back from a couple cliffs he was about to leap off. Anyway that was about 3 hours and by then the breeze had come up and the birds had went for their noon siesta. I took a ride over to the Palmer Visitor center and they have a great flower garden there. Shot a few flowers and then got distracted by the bees and hoverflys. I'm easily distracted. :)

Shot a few gig of them and soon discovered when I got home that shooting little things even with a good macro lens takes some learning. This is one of the few shots I saved

Sikorsky Hoverfly mark 1 "KK995" has been suspended from the ceiling of the RAF Museum Hendon since 2003. She is really KL110 even though KK995 had appeared on parts of the airframe.

The Hoverfly was the first helicopter to see service with the RAF.

Some saw service training Army Air Corps pilots during 1945.

The Sikorsky Hoverfly left RAF service in 1949 and some were transferred to the Royal Navy - truly a cross service career!

Syrphus sp. I think.

Hoverfly, feeding on a chicory, is cautious when a metallic green bee approaches. These bees don't pose a danger to them, but I've seen a dragonfly snatch a small hoverfly right off the flower.

We went to Hoverfly after a series of visits to model shops looking for remote/radio controlled cars - a long term research project for birthdays and Christmas a long time off. We were redirected and filtered here by friendly men in shops stuffed to the gunnels with eccentric toys from all over the world. The shop has been open just over six months, it's full of pretty wonderful things that and boys and dads will LOVE. Trevor's the owner, incredibly helpful, friendly and accommodating. A genuine star. Go there and BUY STUFF!
