Flies in the family Syrphidae are commonly known as hoverflies, flower flies, or syrphid flies.

The hoverfly Dasysyrphus tricinctus is widespread in Britain but not usually seen in any numbers. It is normally found around the edges of lowland woodland. Peak numbers are from May and June, and then again in August and September. I spotted this one a when we were walking from Hoe Mill Lock to Paper Mill Lock along the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation.
Hoverfly - Myathropa florae one of the larger hoverflies, the males are very territorial and like perching on high spots with a good view (often my flash diffuser)

Some specimens of Sphegina clunipes (dark coloured flies) and Sphegina sibirica (light coloured flies) - this hoverfly has only colonised the UK in recent years.

Hoverfly Sphaerophoria scripta male. Would have preferred to take a natural light shot but it was far too windy.
Hoverfly larva in leaf litter. Not sure if this will pupate or not. Focus stacked using zerene stacker. Probably Syrphus sp.
