If you zoom in you can see that he's holding onto a stamen as he feeds on the pollen (which I thought was very cute!).

Mating time.

Hoverflies are good fun to photograph. They stay still for a few seconds then make a sudden movement. This is just enough time to get a shot lined up and taken once you get your eye in! I was experimenting with capturing fast movement using the flash here - amazed it caught a still of the wings at 1/250s! I'm going to have to rig up some sensors to find out how short the flash burst is; it must be sub-millisecond
