An image photographed in my garden of a hoverfly on an anemone plant.

Remaining on the Hoverfly theme, always pleased to find these smart looking hoverflies each year though after an extensive search. it appears to just be the single individual so far.

Best viewed very large.

Pied Hoverfly on Fox and Cubs Flower

A hoverfly pauses to feed, its delicate transparent wings revealing an extraordinary network of veins against the soft lavender backdrop of the flower.

What caught my attention was the contrast, the bold yellow and black markings of the hoverfly against those gentle purple tones, while the shallow depth of field allows the tiny subject to command the frame.

Hoverflies, also called flower flies or syrphid flies, make up the insect family Syrphidae. As their common name suggests, they are often seen hovering or nectaring at flowers.

A syrphid hovers in a sunbeam in a small wood on Thursley Common.

Hoverfly, Episyrphus balteatus in the "studio". Focus stacked using zerene. Same hoverfly as previous on finger shots. I eventually released the hover into my greenhouse which does at least have frost heating

Hoverfly in the "studio". I temporarily kidnapped this hoverfly from outside and fed it some sugar/honey to keep it busy whilst I took some shots. Focus stacked using zerene. I did release it where I trapped it.

I don't know what kind of flowers these are but the Hoverflies sure liked them. I liked the "hairy" center.
